2011 Purdue Boilermakers Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Purdue NCAA Football Preview

2011 Purdue Boilermakers College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Purdue NCAA Football Preview: A few down years have pushed the Purdue Boilermakers to the backburner in the Big Ten, but it wasn’t all that long ago that the program was consistently competing for conference titles and making appearances in the Rose Bowl. The past success for the Boilermakers is the reason fans in West Lafayette are optimistic despite a 4-8 record last season. With a lot of returning talent on both sides of the ball, this year’s team could be capable of rewarding the optimism with a surprising turnaround.

Former Miami Hurricanes QB Robert Marve will be back under center for the Boilermakers this season, following an ACL injury that robbed him of most of the 2010-11 campaign. There is the potential that he could split snaps with Rob Henry, who replaced Marve last season after the injury. Although normally a quarterback controversy isn’t a good thing for team chemistry, Marve and Henry each bring something different to the table when they step under center. If used properly, the duo could cause headaches for opposing defenses.

Marve is a pure pocket passer with a big arm. Let’s face it. You don’t get recruited but the Hurricanes without having plenty of talent and potential. He can test opposing defenses deep and spread the field for the running game. Meanwhile, Henry is dual-threat QB, and he actually led the Boilermakers in rushing yards last season. He is an excellent athlete, and he can beat defenses out of the pocket. By rotating both players in and out of the game, Purdue could really expand the playbook. It won’t exactly be a Chris Leak and Tim Tebow combination, but Marve and Henry could work well together.

At running back, Purdue will welcome back Ralph Bolden. An ACL injury knocked Bolden out for most of last season, but he was expected to be an every-down back before the injury, and he will get a chance to show his stuff in a featured role this season. He will be joined by an inexperienced group of wide receivers, but four starting offensive linemen return. The unit gave up only 18 sacks all of last season while helping rushers to almost 4.5 yards per carry. If the line plays up to its potential, the Purdue offense could be surprisingly potent.

The defense should be solid as well with nine starters returning. The strength of the unit figures to be the secondary. Both starting corners and safeties from last year’s team are back. Defensive tackle Kawaan Short is a player to watch as well. He was one of the better pass-rushing tackles in the Big Ten last season, grabbing six sacks. Kicker Carson Wiggs gives the Boilermakers a reliable option on special teams as well.

In terms of experience, Purdue has plenty on both sides of the ball. That being said, the Boilermakers don’t quite have the talent to compete for a conference crown. An easy out-of-conference schedule should get the season off to a solid start, and while they won’t win a ton of games in the Big Ten, the Boilermakers should find a way to get to six wins and to be bowl eligible once again.
