2011 Oregon Ducks Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Oregon NCAA Football Preview

2011 Oregon Ducks College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Oregon NCAA Football Preview: Last season was nearly a dream come true for the Oregon Ducks. However, a three-point loss to Auburn in the BCS Championship was a disappointing end to an otherwise impressive season. Couple that with a Rose Bowl loss to Ohio State the year before, and the program Chip Kelly is building is on the verge of becoming a powerhouse. A win in a big game is all that is missing, and that could come in the form of a national title in 2011-12 considering all the weapons back for one of the best offenses in the nation.

The two most important pieces of an offense that led the nation in points scored and tied for first in yardage last season are back in the mix this year. Quarterback Darron Thomas and running back LaMichael James are both Heisman candidates, and both players are difference makers that change the outcome of a game with one play. James in particular was tough for opponents to stop last season, piling up more than 1,600 yards and finding the end zone 21 times. Thomas wasn’t too shabby either, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and firing 30 touchdowns. With three starters back on the offensive line and Kelly system working its magic, Thomas and James should have no problem duplicating last season’s impressive offensive totals.

Defensively, the Ducks weren’t exactly the stingiest unit in terms of yardage, but they did give up less than 20 points a game last season. Losing some key starters on the defensive line and in the linebacking core won’t help the cause, but when the offense is approaching 50 points a game, the defense doesn’t have to be flawless. Not to mention the fact that the Oregon secondary, which is mostly intact, is an opportunistic group that finished the year tied for fourth in the nation with 20 interceptions.

The Ducks won’t have to wait long to find out what they are made of this year. While most teams schedule a cupcake opponent, Oregon will take on the LSU Tigers. The schedule gets a little more manageable after that, and the Ducks should cruise through the PAC-12 schedule with the possible exception being a road game against Stanford. The rivalry game against Oregon State to close the season could be tricky as well, but LSU and Stanford are the two big games standing between the Ducks and a possible national title shot.

As tough as the opener against LSU will be, the early matchup should benefit the Ducks. The Tigers are going to have a tough time stopping an experienced, high-powered offense right out of the gate. The showdown against Stanford figures to be a shootout once again, and although the Cardinal have Andrew Luck, the Ducks have the same weapons back that topped Luck and company last season. With Thomas and James leading the way, Oregon will pile up plenty of points once again. A PAC-12 title seems inevitable, and a return trip to the title game is well within reach.
