2011 Michigan State Spartans College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Michigan State Spartans NCAA Football Preview: When Mike Dantonio took the job as head coach of Michigan State, the Spartans were in disarray. Coming off an 11-2 season, it is clear that Dantonio has the program heading in the right direction. One year after being the surprise of the Big Ten and co-champions of the conference, the Spartans have their eyes on a BCS bid in 2011-12.

In order to do so, Michigan State will have to shake off an ugly 49-7 loss to Alabama in the Capitol One Bowl to end last season. The Crimson Tide made the Spartan players look slow on both sides of the ball and terribly undersized on defense. Dantonio and company have had an entire offseason to forget about the humiliating defeat, but a blowout loss on a big stage can leave a lasting psychological impact, especially when it comes time to play against the other top teams in the Big Ten.

Fortunately for MSU fans, an exciting offensive unit remains largely intact. Quarterback Kirk Cousins returns and will look to build on his 20 touchdown, 2,800-yard campaign from a year ago, which saw him emerge as one of the most accurate passers in the Big Ten. His main target – receiver B.J. Cunnigham – is back as well, along with a pair of talented running backs. Expect the Spartans to be productive on the offensive side of the ball, although efficiency could be an issue at times.

On the defensive side of things, the loss of playmaking linebacker Greg Jones is going to change what the Spartans are able to do as a unit. Jones could stop the run, blitz the quarterback and cover receivers and running backs. Without a do-it-all defender in the mix, a somewhat suspect defense could be exposed this year. The fact that the Spartans lose two other linebackers and two members of their secondary from last season won’t help the cause either.

Looking at the schedule, it appears that the Spartans are going to have their work cut out for them. At the very least, a handful of games should go down to the wire. Road games at Notre Dame, Nebraska, Ohio State and Iowa could all end badly for MSU. Hosting the Wisconsin Badgers won’t be a walk in the park either. If the Spartans can emerge from those five games with a 3-2 mark, they should count their blessings.

The deciding factor could end up being the Wisconsin game. Even in the best case scenario, the trip to Nebraska seems too tough a task. The Badgers bring a similar hard-nosed running game to the table, and without any returning starters at linebacker, the front seven of MSU s probably going to take a beating. The Spartans’ offense is good, but it isn’t explosive enough to come from behind and make up for a lackluster defense against the top teams in the conference. Expect a few bumps in the road in 2011-12 as a conference title eludes Michigan State this season.
