2011 Kansas St Wildcats College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Kansas St Wildcats NCAA Football Preview: Since returning to coach Kansas State, Bill Snyder has transformed the Wildcats into one of the best running teams in the Big 12. Unfortunately, KSU has been equally terrible on defense during Snyder’s second tenure as head coach. The discrepancy between the Wildcats production on offense and lack of production on defense has kept the program hovering around .500. Unless the balance improves in 2011-12, Kansas State will have trouble taking the next step.

Last year, the Wildcats piled up nearly 200 yards per game on the ground and averaged more than 30 points a game. That being said, the offense wasn’t exactly balanced with the passing game averaging less than 200 yards a game. In fact, the Wildcats defeated Texas last season despite completing just two passes. While the point totals the Wildcats put up made it clear that the run-first offense was plenty effective, the main cog of the rushing attach will be missing this year. Senior Daniel Thomas, who piled up more than 1,500 yards in 2010-11, is now a Miami Dolphin. For a team that relied so heavily on the ground game, losing the centerpiece to that attack could have serious repercussions.

Fortunately for the Wildcats, a potential replacement is already ready and waiting. Running back Bryce Brown, a transfer from Tennessee, is as highly touted as a recruits come. Brown was named the top high school player in the nation in 2008, and after transferring from Tennessee in 2009, he is eligible to take the field this season. He has legit 4.3 speed, and considering the last running back to be named high school player of the year was Adrian Peterson, Brown’s potential is sky high. Kansas State will turn him lose this season in the hopes that he can carry the ground game and the offense in general.

As good as the Wildcats can be running the ball, stopping the run remains a mystery for this team. The Wildcats gave up more than 200 rushing yards per game last year and nearly 30 points. The front seven was equally ineffective at rushing the passer, making it one of the worst all-around units in the Big 12 last season. More concerning was the fact that the defense got worse as the year progressed. During the final three games, the KSU defense gave up more than 40 points per game.

Assuming Brown lives up to the hype, the Wildcats should be in store for a near repeat of the 2010-11 season. Kansas State will score its fair share of points, mainly via the ground game. Meanwhile, KSU will give up plenty of points to the high-powered offenses of the conference as well. The end result will be a lot of high-scoring, shootout-type games for the second year in a row. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M simply have too many weapons for KSU to keep up, and a few other Big 12 opponents will gash the Wildcats as well. An out-of-conference matchup against the Miami Hurricanes could end poorly as well.
