2011 Kansas Jayhawks Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Kansas NCAA Football Preview

2011 Kansas Jayhawks College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Kansas NCAA Football Preview: For one magical year, the Kansas football program garnered as much buzz as the powerhouse basketball program. However, that 11-1 2007 season seems like an eternity ago, especially on the heels of a 3-9 campaign. Now, second-year coach Turner Gill faces an uphill battle as he attempts to produce the same type of success with the Jayhawks as he did in his time at the helm of Buffalo. With fifteen starters returning from last year’s team, Gill at least figures to have some firepower on his side in 2011-12.

The Jayhawks played musical quarterbacks last year with Quin Mecham and Jordan Webb sharing duties under center. With Webb being the younger of the two and showing the ability to play as good as if not better than Mecham, he will likely get the nod. However, there is a wildcard in the equation as true freshman Brock Berglund joins the Jayhawks. Berglund isn’t the most polished pocket passer, but has the ability to run outside of the pocket. For a team that struggled last season to the tune of just 17.1 points per game, the added wrinkle introduced by his running ability could be a major asset.

In the backfield, running back James Sims may be the best offensive player for Kansas. In his first year as starter, he led the Jayhawks in rushing and chipped in nine scores. Sims will be joined be three inexperienced but highly-touted freshmen. As bad as Kansas performed on the offensive side of the ball last year, it is a pretty safe bet that Gil will try to get all four involved in some capacity. The Jayhawks need points and explosive plays anyway they can get them.

Despite the bevy of running backs, Kansas could find itself sputtering once again on offense if the line doesn’t improve. From giving up sacks to failing to open any running lanes, the big guys up front didn’t exactly impose their will on opponents. The good news is that three starters do return, and a year of experience could help fix some of the issues. With a little time in the pocket, the Jayhawk signal callers may finally be able to get the passing attack going.

Even if the offense does improve, the Kansas defense has to follow suit in order for the Jayhawks to have any kind of success in 2011-12. Last year’s unit gave up more than 400 yards of offense a game and allowed opponents to average nearly five touchdowns a contest. Linebacker Steven Johnson is a talented playmaker, but he is surrounded by a group that has been unable to get the job done to this point. In a conference loaded with high-powered spread attacks, there is simply no room for a defense that is a complete liability.

A struggling offense and a porous defense isn’t a recipe for success in any conference, especially the Big 12. Turner Gil has brought a lot of young talent to Kansas, but those players need time to gel and mature at the college level. In the meantime, the Jayhawks and their current roster are going to be overmatched on a regular basis once again this year.
