2011 Indiana Hoosiers Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Indiana NCAA Football Preview

2011 Indiana Hoosiers College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Indiana NCAA Football Preview: The Indiana Hoosiers haven’t exactly been a powerhouse in the Big Ten over the years. In fact, winning a few conference games has been tough enough, let alone competing for the title. Coming off a 5-7 season, the Hoosiers enter the 2011-12 season with a new head coach but the same old question marks on both sides of the ball. Miracles can always happen, but Indiana fans should brace themselves for another year as the doormat of the Big Ten.

Despite finishing under .500 last season, the play of quarterback Ben Chappell was a bright spot for the Hoosiers. He topped 3,000 yards and fired 24 touchdowns compared to just nine interceptions. Unfortunately for Indiana, Chappell graduated, along with two starting wide receivers and the team’s leading rusher. Despite a decent signal caller, the Hoosiers still struggled to put up points in conference play, being held under 20 points five times. Factor in the losses on offense, and this year’s team could be even worse.

The center of this year’s offense, if there is such a thing, is going to be wide receiver Damarlo Belcher. His massive size makes him a handful to cover, especially in the red zone. Finding someone to get him the ball is going to be a challenge for new coach Kevin Wilson, but the former Oklahoma offensive coordinator has been the architect of potent offenses in the past. Granted, it will likely take him a few years to so, but Belcher will still put up some decent numbers in 2011-12.

Indiana’s prospects on defense are equally bleak. The Hoosiers lose their leading tackler, both starting cornerbacks, their starting safety, and their best pass rusher. They got torched on the ground in conference play, giving up more than 300 yards on two occasions. The Indiana defense got worse as the season progressed as well, including a brutal 83-20 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers. Both starting defensive tackles return, but that is a thin foundation for a defense that needs a lot of work.

The strength of Indiana’s offense may just be kicker Mitch Ewald. While having a freshman kicker that shows the poise of a senior isn’t a bad thing, no team is going to be successful in the long run when a kicker is its most effective weapon. Not to mention the fact the rest of the offense has to get into scoring position before Ewald can take the field.

Looking the schedule, Indiana figures to get most of its wins during a cupcake out-of-conference schedule. Once Big Ten play begins, the Hoosiers are going to be lucky to pull out one or two victories. The offense that struggled last season figures to be even worse without its star quarterback, and the defense is going to get shredded once again. It is a pretty simple formula. A bad defense and bad offense isn’t going to equal many wins for the Hooisers.
