2016 March Madness Bracket Picks & Predictions: No. 1 Seed in the Most Trouble

2016-Bracketology-Picks-and-Predictions2016 March Madness Bracket Picks & Predictions: No. 1 Seed in the Most Trouble: A No. 1 seed has never lost in the Round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament, and it probably isn’t going to happen in 2016. That being said, it is almost as unlikely that all four top seeds will cut down the nets and reach the Final Four in Houston, Texas. In fact, recent history suggests that one of the top seeds could very well bow out before the first weekend is over.  In many cases, it isn’t always the weakest No. 1 seed that goes down early, but rather the top seed that faces the toughest opponents the soonest. Looking at potential Round of 32 matchups and beyond can give you an idea of which No. 1 seed could end up busting your bracket, and with that in mind, here is a closer look the path each top seed faces to reach the Final Four in the 2016 March Madness Bracket.

2016 March Madness Bracket Picks & Predictions: No. 1 Seed in the Most Trouble

  1. North Carolina Tar Heels (East Region)

In terms of overall talent, a strong argument can be made that North Carolina is the best team in the country. Unfortunately, the Tar Heels have been known to play down to competition, and they have a path to the Final Four landed with potential pitfalls. Potential Round of 32 opponents, USC and Providence, are both loaded with talent. In fact, Providence’s Kris Dunn is probably the best point guard in the country. If the Tar Heels survive, possible Sweet 16 opponents include Kentucky and Indiana, who are among the hottest teams in the country. North Carolina isn’t going to have any easy games after their opener.

  1. Kansas Jayhawks (South Region)

The Jayhawks grabbed the No. 1 overall seed, but you wouldn’t know it by the strength of their region. Kansas could draw Connecticut in the Round of 32, and the Huskies are up to their old March tricks, winning their conference tournament with the help of a 60-foot 3-pointer. From there, either Maryland or California are likely lurking, and both squads can match the Jayhawks in terms of NBA-caliber talent. Kansas is going to have to be on point just to escape the Sweet 16.

  1. Oregon Ducks (West Region)

Oregon may have been a surprise choice as a No. 1 seed, but the Ducks have excellent depth and plenty of firepower on offense. They also have one of the easier Round of 32 matchups, and the Ducks should steamroll to the Sweet 16. Granted, Duke or Baylor could be waiting, but the Ducks thrive in faster-paced, high-scoring games, and the region is full of teams that will allow Oregon to plays its style of basketball.

  1. Virginia Cavaliers (Midwest Region)

In many ways, the Cavaliers are the scariest No. 1 seed to trust because their hard-nosed, defensive-minded approach lends itself to closer games. That being said, Virginia’s elite defense should carry them all the Elite Eight with relative ease in a region full of teams that have to score a lot of points to win games. Yes, they are likely headed for an instance classic with Michigan State to reach the Final Four, but unlike the other top seeds in this year’s NCAA Tournament, the Cavaliers seem like a safe bet to be playing in their regional final.
