This weekend, the Cup Series will visit a road course for the second and final time in 2012. Watkins Glen International will play host to Sunday’s race, and the seven-turn course brings plenty of elevation changes and sweeping turns to challenge the drivers. Braking and shifting are critical, but unlike Infineon Raceway that is known as the more technically demanding of the road courses, the higher speeds seen at The Glen might make the more treacherous of the two. Get into the corner a little too fast, and a driver could end up sliding off the track and into one of the many sand and grass traps lining the course.

Last year, there was no slowing down Kyle Busch and Marcos Ambrose. The two combined to lead 70 of the 92 laps, with Busch leading a race-high 49. Busch actually started the race from the pole, and Ambrose quickly established himself as the top threat. Busch was able to keep Ambrose at bay most of the race, but he lost the top spot during a round of pit stops. Once out front, Ambrose proved too much for Busch or anyone else to handle. He went on to win the first Cup Series race of his career after numerous close calls.

The Favorites – 2012 Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Since joining the Cup Series in 2008, Marcos Ambrose has been nothing short of dominant at Watkins Glen. He has an incredible 2.3 average finish at the track, and he has finished third or better in all four starts. Ambrose is also the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and as the top road racer in the series, he could easily make it back-to-back wins at the seven-turn road course this weekend.

His five career victories at Watkins Glen are the most in track history, and from 2004 to 2009, Tony Stewart finished either first or second in six straight starts at the road course. His 7.1 average finish at The Glen is the second best in the series, and in 13 career starts, he has finished seventh or better 10 times. Stewart has the second-most road course wins in Cup Series history, and he could move even closer to the record with a win Sunday.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

After finishing 33rd in his Watkins Glen debut, Kyle Busch has been brilliant even since. He has finished in the top 10 in his last six starts at the track, winning the 2008 event. In fact, Busch has finished fourth or better in three of his last four starts at the road course, including a third-place run last year. It seems like only a matter of time before he picks up another win at The Glen.

Although he has struggled to find any kind of consistency for the last two and half seasons, Juan Pablo Montoya has remained a force to be reckoned with at the road courses. In his last four starts at Watkins Glen, he has four finishes of seventh or better. Montoya also won at the track in 2010, giving him victories at both road courses on the Cup Series schedule. He may struggle at oval tracks, but he is a contender this weekend.

Unfortunately for Carl Edwards, he is known throughout the garage as the best road course driver that has yet to win a road course event in the Cup Series. He has certainly come close at Watkins Glen, finishing 12th or better in six straight starts. Edwards has five top-10s during the stretch, including three top-five finishes. It seems like a matter of when and not if he finally closes the deal.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

The super sub this season has been Brian Vickers. He has a 10.5 average finish in four starts with Michael Waltrip Racing in 2012 and two top-five finishes. More importantly, his best finish of the year was a fourth-place run at the first road course event at Infineon Raceway. Vickers does have five top-20 finishes in his last six starts at Watkins Glen, and as good as he has looked at Infineon, he is definitely a potential upset candidate.

While he certainly isn’t known as a road racing ace, it is tough to argue with what Martin Truex Jr. has done at Watkins Glen lately. He has four top-15 finishes in his last five starts at the track, and he has finished sixth or better three times during the stretch. He finished a career-best fourth at The Glen last fall, and much like his teammate Clint Bowyer did at Infineon a few months ago, Truex could come out of nowhere to win his first road course race at the Cup level.

With as frequently as he tears up cars, Kurt Busch is definitely a risky bet this weekend at Watkins Glen. However, he does have four finishes of 11th or better in his last five starts at the track, including a runner-up effort in 2010. Busch also showed at Infineon earlier this year that he can remain competitive at a road course despite driving for a small-market team like Phoenix Racing. He finished third at Infineon, and as well as he has run at The Glen, Busch should have a puncher’s chance this weekend.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He has certainly established himself as one of the top drivers in the series, but Matt Kenseth is never going to be known for his road racing skills. He has just three top-10 finishes in 12 starts at Watkins Glen, and he has never finished better than eighth. More importantly, Kenseth has gone seven straight starts without even cracking the top 10 at the track. He has gotten to the point where he can finish in the top 15 and salvage a decent day, but he is probably never going to win a road course event.
