2012 Coca-Cola 600 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Coca-Cola 600 Favorites and Sleepers

2012 Coca-Cola 600 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Coca-Cola 600 Favorites and Sleepers at Charlotte Motor Speedway: Following last weekend’s All-Star Race at Charlotte, teams won’t have to travel far too for Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600. After all, Charlotte Motor Speedway will host this weekend’s race, as well. The race is the longest in the series, and the extra 100 miles can take a serious toll on the drivers and cars alike, and keeping up with the changing track temperatures can be a chore for crew chiefs. Winning the Coca-Cola 600 is as much a test of endurance as it is a test of speed.

Auto Racing

In last year’s Coca-Cola 600, Roush Fenway Racing and Kyle Busch dominated a majority of the race. Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and Busch all led at least 50 laps during the race, including a race-high 103 laps by Kenseth. However, a long green flag run to end the race brought fuel mileage into play and dropped all four out of contention. Instead, Dale Earnhardt Jr. appeared to be heading to his first victory in almost three years until he ran out of fuel just shy of the finish line on the final lap. Kevin Harvick was the beneficiary, and he drove past the coasting Junior for the win.

The Favorites – 2012 Coca-Cola 600 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

After his dominant showing in the All-Star Race, Jimmie Johnson has to be considered a favorite for this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600. He is a six-time winner at the track, and his 10.5 average finish is the second best among active drivers. Johnson has already won the All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600 in the same season once in his career, and he looks primed to do it again Sunday night.

In his last six starts at Charlotte, Matt Kenseth has five top-10 finishes, and he led the most laps in his only finish outside the top 10. His victory at the track last fall was the second of his career at Charlotte, and he actually had the best car in both races in 2011. Kenseth looked like the only driver capable of challenging Jimmie Johnson in last weekend’s All-Star Race, and his patient style should come in handy during the 600-mile marathon.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Coca-Cola 600 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Since the start of the 2006 season, no driver has won more races at Charlotte than Kasey Kahne. His three victories have come during a stretch when he has nine top-12 finishes in 12 starts at the track. Kahne enters the race with top-10 finishes in his last five starts this season, and he could ride the hot streak to another win at one of his best tracks.

He has never won a Cup race at Charlotte, but Kyle Busch sure has come close. In his last nine starts at the track, he has finished eighth or better eight times. He has finished third or better five times during the stretch, including three times in his last four starts. Busch led the most laps at the track last fall, and it is only a matter of time before all his strong runs lead to a victory.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Coca-Cola 600 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Although he didn’t win the All-Star Race last weekend, A.J. Allmendinger made quite a statement. He cut a tire in the Sprint Showdown but still rallied to finish second and make the main event. He then drove from the back of the field into the top 10. After finishing fifth and seventh in two starts at Charlotte last season, Allmendinger appears to have figured out the 1.5-mile track.

After failing to crack the top 15 in his first four starts at Charlotte, Marcos Ambrose exploded last season. He finished sixth in the Coca-Cola 600 and fifth in the fall event. It’s no coincidence that Ambrose started driving for the same Richard Petty Motorsports team that helped Kasey Kahne win three races at the track. Ambrose is back with RPM this year, and he should be a surprise contender once again.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Coca-Cola 600 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He has won two races this year, but Brad Keselowski has struggled at Charlotte throughout his career. In five starts at the track, he has never finished in the top 10. Worse yet, he hasn’t even cracked the top 15 in his last four starts, and his best finish in the Coca-Cola 600 is 19th.
