Auto Racing

There isn’t a more pressure-packed race during the regular season than this weekend’s event at Richmond International Raceway. It is the final race before the Chase begins, and three spots in the playoffs are still up for grabs. With a chance to compete for a title on the line, drivers are going to do just about anything in order to punch their ticket to the postseason.

Last fall, Denny Hamlin gave his home state fans plenty to cheer about. After Carl Edwards controlled the action early, Hamlin seized control and never looked back. He led a race-high 251 laps and survived a late charge from teammate Kyle Busch to seal the win. Outside of Hamlin and Edwards, Clint Bowyer was the only other driver to see significant time at the front of the field.

Earlier this year, Busch returned the favor. He delivered a dominating performance, leading 235 of the 400 laps and holding off Hamlin in the closing stages. It was Busch’s third career victory at Richmond and the fifth straight win at the track for Joe Gibbs Racing. For the second race in row, all three JGR cars finished in the top 15.

The Favorites – 2011 Wonderful Pistachios 400 Lines and Odds

This weekend’s race is without a doubt Kyle Busch’s to lose. He has 11 top-five finishes in 13 starts at Richmond, and his 4.9 average finish is the best in the series. Busch has won three of the last five races at RIR, including the April event earlier this year. Busch has finished either first or second seven times at the track, including in his last three starts.

Virginia native Denny Hamlin has enjoyed plenty of success at his home track. He has finished outside the top 15 only once in 11 starts at RIR, and his 7.5 average finish is the second best among active drivers. Hamlin is a two-time winner at Richmond and the defending winner of this weekend’s race.

Last weekend, Brad Keselowski finished sixth at Atlanta, and it was his worst finish in more than a month. He continues to be on the best roll of his live, and he is even more dangerous heading to a short track. Keselowski won at Bristol a few weeks ago, and he could easily do the same this weekend at Richmond.

The Dark Horses – 2011 Wonderful Pistachios 400 Betting Odds and Free Tips

Former Richmond winner Clint Bowyer has run well at the short track since the start of his career. He has finished inside the top 20 in all 11 of his starts at RIR, finishing 12th or better 10 times. Bowyer has been on the doorstep of a return trip to Victory Lane in recent years, finishing sixth last fall and earlier this year.

Short track ace Kevin Harvick has been as consistent as they come at Richmond. He has finished 12th or better in 13 of his last 14 starts at Richmond, including 11 top-10 finishes. Harvick has just one win at the track during the stretch, but since he always seems to be near the front, he always has a chance to win.

Sleepers Specials – 2011 Wonderful Pistachios 400 Predictions and Odds

In five starts at Richmond, Joey Logano has compiled a solid 12.8 average finish and has never finished outside the top 20. Last fall, he delivered a career-best fourth-place finish. Joe Gibbs Racing has dominated at RIR, winning five straight races. Logano hasn’t been a part of the run, but he could easily change that this weekend.

In three starts at Richmond, Marcos Ambrose has finished 11th or better three times. Last season, he finished fifth and ninth at the track. Outside of the road courses, Ambrose has done his best work at the short tracks. If he is going to win at an oval, Richmond could be the place.

Big Names to Avoid – 2011 Wonderful Pistachios 400 Vegas Odds and Free Picks

Although Kurt Busch is a former winner at Richmond, he has been unimpressive at the track in recent starts. He has finished outside the top 15 in three straight starts, missing the setup in all three outings. Busch is talented enough to win this weekend, but he hasn’t even been in the ballpark at Richmond lately.

He has had a miserable year, and life might not get much better for Greg Biffle at Richmond this weekend. He has failed to crack the top 10 in his last nine starts at the track, and he has just two career top-five finishes in 18 starts.
