2011 LSU Tigers Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 LSU NCAA Football Preview

2011 LSU Tigers College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – LSU NCAA Football Preview: Since winning the national title in 2007-08, the LSU Tigers haven’t been able to recapture the form that made them the best team in college football. Playing in the always tough Southeastern Conference hasn’t helped, and mediocre defense has wasted some dominant defensive units. That being said, Les Miles has plenty of talent returning on a team that went 11-2 last season, and LSU fans are already predicting the program’s return to dominance in 2011-12.

The Tigers return 15 starters this season, including eight on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Jordan Jefferson has underachieved thus far, and last season, he was the not-so-proud leader of the worst passing attack in the SEC. That being said, Jefferson talent and athleticism have never been questioned, and with another year of experience under his belt, he should be more prepared for life as a QB in the SEC. With a great line in front of him and plenty of speed at the skill positions, Jefferson won’t have to do a lot in order to be effective. If he can improve just a little bit, the Tigers will have a chance to make some noise.

While the passing attack was dismal last season, LSU did have the fourth-best rushing attack in the conference last season. The Tigers will be breaking in a new feature back this season, and sophomore Spencer Ware figures to see a good amount of carries. However, highly-touted freshman Kenny Hilliard should get some touches as well. If Hilliard catches on quickly, expect Miles to find ways to get the ball in his hands as often as possible. Assuming the hype is even somewhat deserved, Hilliard could end up being the explosive weapon the LSU offense has been missing lately.

Defensively, the Tigers welcome back seven starters from a unit that ranked second in the SEC in both points allowed and yardage given up. The secondary was especially impressive, giving up less than 2,000 yards for the year – the fewest of any team in the conference. While nobody will be able to fully replace cornerback Patrick Peterson, the defensive front seven should be one of the stingiest in the nation. Plus, there is still plenty of speed in the secondary, even without its most talented player back in the mix. The bottom line is that this defense is going to among the best in the country.

It is hard to envision a tougher schedule than the one the Tigers will face this year. From the series opener against Oregon to a road game against Alabama, LSU doesn’t have many opportunities to have an off week if it wants to play for the championship. In addition to the Crimson Tide, Miles’ bunch has to face Mississippi State and West Virginia on the road. The Tigers also face Florida, Arkansas and Auburn at home. When all is said and done, LSU will face seven teams that will likely finish inside the top 25.

As brutal as the schedule is for the Tigers this season, this team has the talent to handle such a slate thanks to an improved offense and devastating defense. The opener against an Oregon team that averaged almost 50 points a game last season and the road game against Alabama will likely prove too much for LSU, but the Tigers will definitely be in the mix for conference title and maybe more. In the end, LSU will likely have to settle for an at-large BCS bid at best.
