2011 College Football Predictions: Wisconsin Badgers NCAA Football Predictions, Picks, Odds and Schedule

2011 Wisconsin Badgers College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Wisconsin Badgers NCAA Football Preview: After mediocre seasons in 2008 and 2009, Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema was under some fire from critics. However, and 11-1 regular season and an 11-2 record in 2010-11 and a trip to the Rose Bowl did a lot to silence the naysayers. Coming off a Big Ten title, anything less than a repeat performance and a return trip to Pasadena for the Badgers would be a bit of a disappointment.

Disappointment was the name of the game at the end of last season when Wisconsin gave away multiple chances to win the Rose Bowl against TCU. Despite the less than ideal ending, there is plenty to be optimistic about in Madison entering the 2011-12 season. Even with the departure of quarterback Scott Tolzien, the Badgers could be tough to contain this year.

For starters, the QB issue could be solved in a big way if rumors about former North Carolina State signal caller Russell Wilson are true. Wilson is a dual-threat QB with above average passing skills. Bielema doesn’t ask his quarterbacks to win games anyway, just manage them. Wilson’s ability to run makes him a perfect fit and an extra weapon for an already dominant running team.

Even if Wilson doesn’t join the Badgers, three quality backs are returning this season. Montee Ball, James White and John Clay are all solid runners, and Wisconsin will unleash all three against opponents once again this year. Behind the always stout Badgers’ offensive line, fresh legs will wear down even the toughest of defensive lines. It was a recipe that Wisconsin road to one of the most prolific offenses in the conference in 2010-11. Regardless of who is under center, the smash-mouth style should prove equally effective in 2011-12.

While there aren’t a ton of well-known playmakers on the defensive side of the ball, Wisconsin always brings plenty of energy. The fact that the team’s rushing attack gives the defense plenty of time to rest helps a ton as well. The Badgers are a conservative unit, but that’s all they need to be when the offense is putting up points on a consistent pace.

The schedule also works in the favor of the Badgers. The three toughest games on the schedule figure to be home games against Nebraska and Penn State and a road contest against Ohio State. The trip to Columbus looks a lot less intimidating now that Terrelle Pryor and Jim Tressel are out of the picture, and the Buckeyes are in a bit of disarray in general. When it comes to home games, the Badgers enjoy arguably the best advantage in the nation. As good as the Cornhuskers and Nittany Lions are expected to be, “The Madhouse” has swallowed up much better teams over the years.

Run, run, run will be the theme for the Badgers all season long, and they have the horses to make the style work. If Wilson does indeed arrive on campus, the possibility of an undefeated season exists. Without Wilson, Wisconsin should still have another excellent year, but Nebraska could prove too tough with Cornhusker QB Taylor Martinez making big plays in crunch time. Either way, the Badgers should win the Leaders Division and earn a trip to the first-ever Big Ten title game. Nebraska could be waiting in the conference championship game as well, but even with two losses to the Cornhuskers, an at-large BCS bid is within reach.
