Bantamweight Bout

Miguel Angel Torres vs. Michael “Mayday” McDonald

The former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Angel Torres (40-4) is looking to get back to the form that won him 37 out of 38 fights. A tall and lanky fighter for 135 pounds Torres will use that reach advantage to keep opponents at bay and secure submissions on the ground. Only going the distance 8 times and finishing 23 fights by submission he is the kind of fighter always looking to finish.

Michael “Mayday” McDonald (14-1) finished his first seven fights all within the first minute of the bout. At only 21 years old he has remained busy since turning pro in 2007. He is 3-0 in the UFC and his most recent win came in a 56 second knockout of Alex Soto. McDonald has a big right hand and excellent counter punching.

It’s hard to deny that McDonald (-110) has a very bright future ahead of him. He is young and always looking to finish his opponents. He will do great things in the UFC but this step up in competition will be a little too much for McDonald. Torres (-120) will use his reach to stay away from McDonald’s big right hand and use his jiu-jitsu if he has too. There’s no evidence that McDonald has the wrestling prowess to smother Torres like has happened in the past so expect this one to stay upright.

Prediction – Miguel Angel Torres by way of unanimous decision

Heavyweight Bout

Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub vs. Ben Rothwell

After losing in The Ultimate Fighter finale Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub (8-2) was looking like a top tier heavyweight until he ran into Antonio Nogueira. In his most recent bout he got brutally knocked out by the veteran Nogueira. While his chin was called into question his skills were not. He is a natural athlete with fast hands and knockout power.

Ben Rothwell (31-8) has recently struggled with consistency going 2-3 in his last five bouts. Another problem that plagues Rothwell is his cardio, gassing quickly in his last bout with Mark Hunt. When he is at his best is when he makes fights ugly grinding opponents against the cage and pulling them into brawls.

If Rothwell (+210) wants to win this fight he is going to have to test Schaub’s chin early. The longer this fight goes the longer Rothwell has to gas and for Schaub’s (-280) natural athleticism to take over. Expect Schaub to use his quickness to stay out of range while peppering shots until he finds a hole to exploit.

Prediction – Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub by way of TKO

Welterweight Bout

Rory MacDonald vs. “Beautiful” Che Mills

Rory MacDonald (12-1) is one of the many young prospects in the welterweight division. The only loss of his career came against now interim champ Carlos Condit. He has shown he is dangerous where ever the fight is taking place finishing five fights by knockout and six by submission. While one win against a big name could propel him to contention the UFC is satisfied with him staying with the middle of the pack for now.

“Beautiful” Che Mills (14-4, 1 NC) made his UFC debut in his most recent bout knocking out Chris Cope in just 40 seconds. Primarily known as a striker he has shown good timing in his standup evident by his knees and punches that put down Cope. Mills has shown he is vulnerable to jiu-jitsu having three of his four losses coming from submissions.

The UFC is hoping this is going to be a holdover fight. With the 170 pound division stacked with contenders they aren’t ready to throw MacDonald (-600) into that category yet so instead they throw him an opponent new to the UFC coming off a big victory. Unless Mills (+400) can catch MacDonald sleeping and land a big punch expect this fight to be academic.

Prediction – Rory MacDonald by way of TKO

Light Heavyweight Title Bout

Jon “Bones” Jones (Champion) vs. “Suga” Rashad Evans (Challenger)

Dana White and the UFC are desperately trying to make Jon “Bones” Jones (15-1) the new face of the organization. We have still yet to see this kid truly tested in the octagon and he only seems to get better with every fight. His only loss came from a DQ in a bout he was utterly dominating. Jones will have a significant reach advantage against anyone at 205 which gives him an advantage on the feet and with his jiu-jitsu.

“Suga” Rashad Evans (17-1-1) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Phil Davis that left a lot of fans grumbling. Even though Evans wasn’t able to finish the fight he still completely dominated every round rendering Davis pretty much useless. He is one of the fastest fighters at light heavyweight and has an explosive and well timed takedown.

With these two being former teammates and friends it has added fuel to the drama leading up to the fight. While they have been talking back and forth they are both professionals so don’t expect the antics outside the cage to influence what will happen when the bell finally rings. What will happen is that Evans (+300) is going to have a lot of problems getting into range where he will be able to do damage. The long reach of Jones (-500) will keep him on the outside where he can pick him apart with his unorthodox striking. Evans best hope at scoring will be his takedowns but don’t expect Jones to go down easily who also has an excellent wrestling base. Jones controls the location and tempo of this fight until he decides to attack and finish.

Prediction – Jon “Bones” Jones by way of submission
