2016 NFL Picks & Predictions: AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds & Favorites

The Favorites

He was already billed as the most complete offensive weapon in the draft, and by landing with the Dallas Cowboys, running back Ezekiel Elliott is poised for a huge season. The fact that the Cowboys used the No. 4 pick on Elliott ensure a heavy workload, and with one of the best O-lines in football paving the way, 1,200-plus rushing yards, 1,500-plus yards from scrimmage and double-digit scores are all reasonable expectations. If Elliott stays healthy, he has to be the top candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

He wasn’t a first-round pick, but all the pieces are in place for wide receiver Sterling Shepard to have a big rookie season. For one, he is as NFL-ready as any receiver in the draft thanks to his advanced route running, and he is plenty explosive. Equally as important, he will be playing for a New York Giants offense that tends to be pass heavy, and he should have winnable matchups on a routine basis with fellow receiver Odell Beckham Jr. drawing most of the attention. Don’t rule out a 1,000-yard campaign for Shepard.

The Contenders

Poor 40-yard dash times caused him to slip into the later part of the first round, but receiver Laquon Treadwell is still the big, physical target that had him being mentioned as a potential top-10 pick. He will immediately become the top possession receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, and his size and strength should make him a matchup nightmare in the red zone. If he makes a run at double-digit scores, he will be in the mix for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

While he isn’t guaranteed to start, the only thing standing between quarterback Paxton Lynch and the Denver Broncos’ starting gig is Mark Sanchez. Lynch could easily be the starter in Week 1, and while he will have to adjust a bit to a pro-style offense, he has a cannon arm and more than enough athleticism to make plays outside of the pocket. A strong supporting cast will go a long way to helping his transition, and if Lynch helps guide the defending champs back to the playoffs, he will get plenty of consideration.

He was already posed for a sizeable role after the Cincinnati Bengals lost two receivers in free agency, and receiver Tyler Boyd should be leaned on even more now that tight end Tyler Eifert could miss the start of the year. Boyd will draw favorable matchups playing across from A.J. Green, and a solid season for a likely playoff team should have him on the short list.

There are major questions about the quarterback situation for the Cleveland Browns, but receiver Corey Coleman has the advantage of being the likely No. 1 target for his team as a rookie. He also has big-play speed, and Coleman is going to have plenty of chances to use it as the Browns look his way early and often. Lots of targets could mean lots of yards for Coleman, and he could still be a factor despite playing for a weaker team.

The Sleeper

With DeMarco Murray leading the rushing attack, it may seem like Derrick Henry will be lost in the shuffle. However, Murray doesn’t exactly have the best health history, and Henry should be a factor around the goal line regardless of Murray’s status. Double-digit scores are a legit possibility, and with a little help, Henry could power his way to the top of the rookie class.
