2011 Washington Redskins NFL Odds and Predictions – Redskins Super Bowl Odds and NFC Championship Futures

2011 Washington Redskins NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Washington Redskins NFL Football Season Preview: Mike Shanahan brought a winning reputation with him to Washington last season, but instead of a playoff run, his first year with the Redskins turned into a 6-10 disaster. The defense was awful, and star defensive tackle and his huge contract clashed with Shanahan from the day one. Meanwhile, veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb never clicked with the offense and was eventually benched. Throw in the lack of a running game, and Shanahan enters the 2011-12 season with plenty of holes to fill. Overhauling both the defense and offense in a single offseason isn’t easy, but Washington is paying Shanahan to save this floundering franchise. Now, he has to deliver.

Finding a quarterback was top priority this offseason, but with Rex Grossman and John Beck to choose from, a long-term solution may not be on the roster. Grossman brings Super Bowl experience, but he also brings a history of turnovers poor performances. Beck is more of an unknown. The former second-round pick started five games as a rookie for Miami but hasn’t seen the field since. Both players have shown flashes in the preseason, but the dreaded QB by committee situation could be brewing.

The same committee approach could be used at running game, and considering the Redskins ranked 30th in rushing yards last season, Shanahan needs to do something. Ryan Torain was the best back last year, but he always seems to be bothered by nagging injuries. Roy Helu is the highly-touted rookie, but he needs work in pass protection before he can be an every down back. That leaves the recently acquired Tim Hightower as the feature back to start the year, and he has played the part well in the preseason. In Shanahan’s one-cut, zone-blocking system, Hightower’s power running style seems like a natural fit. If Hightower can get the ground game up and running, the Redskins have chance to improve on an offense that ranked 25th in the NFL last year.

As bad as the Washington offense was a year ago, the defense was even worse. The Redskins ranked outside the top 25 in most categories, including second last against the pass and in total defense. Cornerback DeAngelo Hall leads the secondary and is one of the biggest playmakers at the position. This year, the front office went out and tried to get him a running mate by signing Josh Wilson. When safety LaRon Landry returns from injury, the porous secondary could become serviceable. Against the run, veteran linebacker London Fletcher has been a tackling machine in the middle of the unit, and the addition of defensive tackle Barry Coefield should help make some lanes to get to ball carriers.

While the Redskins have made steps in the right direction, playing in the loaded NFC East is going to slow any progress this team can make in 2011-12. At the end of the day, Shanahan still finds himself without a proven player under center. In a division with Mike Vick, Eli Manning and Tony Romo, the Washington offense is going to find it tough to keep up. The defense should improve, but anything would be an improvement from last season. The Redskins simply don’t have the same amount of talent and weapons as the other teams in the division. Another year in the cellar of the NFC East could be on tap for Shanahan and company.
