2011 Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Odds and Predictions – Jaguars Super Bowl Odds and AFC Championship Futures

2011 Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Football Season Preview: Jacksonville didn’t have a team loaded with superstars last year, but the Jaguars were in the playoff hunt right down to the final weeks. In the end, an injury to running back Maurice Jones-Drew and a below average defense cost the Jaguars a shot at the AFC South title and a spot in the postseason. With some surprising offseason moves in both free agency and the draft, Jacksonville will look to build on its 8-8 campaign with somewhat of a new-look roster in 2011-12.

The good news for the Jaguars is that Jones-Drew is back and apparently healthy to lead a rushing attack that ranked third in the NFL last season. An unexpected bonus from his knee problems last year was the emergence of backup Rashad Jennings. With a capable alternate in place, Jones-Drew should see a little more rest this season, which could actually improve his numbers over the long haul. The two combined for nearly 1,800 yards a year ago, and that total could go up with both players healthy and in the mix all season.

While the running game should remain a strong suit for Jacksonville, the passing attack has some question marks. Top receiver Mike Sims-Walker left for St. Louis, leaving Mike Thomas as the only experienced option. Tight end Marcedes Lewis is always a threat in the red zone, but someone is going to have to step and help Thomas in order to keep defenses honest. There is also the issue that Jack Del Rio hasn’t even revealed who will be starting under center at this point. Veteran David Garrard seems like the safer option, but first-round pick Blaine Gabbert has been seeing a lot of action as well and could steal the gig.

Despite selecting Gabbert, the offseason was more about overhauling the defense for Jacksonville. The Jaguars ranked outside the top 20 on both rushing and passing defense and were 27th in points allowed. The marquee addition was middle linebacker Paul Posluszny, who piled up 140 tackles a year ago. He, along with defensive end Matt Roth, was brought in to sure up the defensive front. Meanwhile, safety Dawan Landry and cornerback Drew Coleman were brought in to do the same for the secondary. Jacksonville did part ways with former first-round selection Derrick Harvey, but he had been borderline invisible on the field anyway. On paper, the changes should help this unit move closer to the middle of the road in terms of production.

The biggest question for the Jaguars this season will be who starts the season under center and whether or not they stay there the entire year. If Del Rio gets into a game of musical quarterbacks, this season could turn into a disaster. Nobody players their best if they constantly have to look over their shoulder after every mistake. Assuming the Jaguars stick with the Garrard, the powerful running game and improvements on defense should put Jacksonville right on the cusp of the playoffs once again. That being said, the always dominant Indianapolis Colts and improved Houston Texans are standing in the way. The Jaguars could squeak over the .500 mark this year, but they still look like the third-best team in the division.
