2013 Subway Fresh Fit 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Vegas Favorites and Sleepers

2013 Subway Fresh Fit 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Subway Fresh Fit 500 Favorites and Sleepers to Win on March 3, 2013 at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona: With the Daytona 500 out of the way, the Cup Series begins the meat of its schedule, starting with Sunday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Thanks to its flat corners, passing is often difficult at the one-mile track. As a result, track position plays a big role in deciding the outcome, and crew chiefs will try any number of strategies to help get their drvier out front for the final run to the finish.

Last March, Denny Hamlin had the car and the strategy to beat, and he outlasted several worthy challengers to pick up his first career win at Phoenix after several close calls. Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson all led more than 50 laps during the race, but in the closing laps, Hamlin worked his way to the front of the field. He then held off Harvick to secure the wins.

The Favorites

Defending race winner Denny Hamlin headlines the list of favorites. Not only did he win the race last March, but he followed it up with a second-place finish in the fall. Overall, he has finished third or better in six of his 15 starts at Phoenix, and his 10.3 average finish is the third best among active drivers. Hamlin is no strange to running up front at PIR, and he is more than capable of winning the first season’s first trip to Phoenix for the second year in a row.

Coming off his second-career Daytona 500 victory, Jimmie Johnson will try to make it two-for-two in 2013 this weekend at Phoenix. Considering he is a four-time winner at the track, back-to-back wins to open the year certainly aren’t out of the question. Throw in the fact that his 6.7 average finish at PIR is the best in the series, and Johnson more than deserves to be mentioned among the favorites.

His three wins at Phoenix are his most at any track on the schedule, and Kevin Harvick could add to his total this weekend. He has finished sixth or better in four of his last five starts at the track, and last year, he led the most laps and finished second in the March race and went to Victory Lane in the fall race. Harvick is as good as they come at PIR.

The Dark Horses

Since moving to Stewart-Haas Racing, Ryan Newman has been a stud at Phoenix. In his last six starts at the track, he has notched five top-five finishes. Newman has a 6.5 average finish at PIR during the stretch, including a win in 2010. He doesn’t win many races these days, but he could make some noise in the desert this weekend.

Veteran Mark Martin almost seems to be getting better with age, especially at Phoenix. Since the start of the 2001 season, his 10.1 average finish is the second best in the series. More importantly, he has four top-five finishes in his last eight starts at the track, including a win in 2009. If Martin is going to win another race before he retires, Phoenix may be his best bet to get the job done.

Sleeper Special

When he was driving for Roush Fenway Racing and Penske Racing, Kurt Busch was downright dominant at Phoenix. While his numbers dropped just about everywhere last season when he moved to Phoenix Racing, PIR was an exception. He managed a solid 15th-place finish at the track in March, and when he returned to the track in the fall as a driver for Furniture Row Racing, Busch cracked the top 10. He is back with Furniture Row in 2013, and his history of success at Phoenix makes him an intriguing sleeper this weekend.

Driver to Avoid

At one point, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was one of the best in the business at Phoenix. In fact, he once reeled off four straight top-five finishes, including two wins, from 2002 to 2005. However, Junior hasn’t been back in the top five at PIR since the streak ended, and he has managed just four top 10s in the 15 races during the stretch. Junior’s numbers have been even worse recently, posting just a single top 10 in his last eight starts at Phoenix.
