2015 College Football Picks & Predictions Week 1 – Michigan @ Utah Odds & Free Picks

The Michigan Wolverines are one of the most storied college football programs of all-time but have fallen upon some tough times as of late. The Big Blue alumni and administration had seen enough of former head coach Brady Hoke and decided to hand him his walking papers as they emptied the vault to bring back former Michigan Wolverines quarterback Jim Harbaugh to resurrect the program as new head coach. The hiring of Harbaugh was a great hire by Big Blue and there’s no doubt Harbaugh will get Michigan going in the right direction and should have them back amongst the nation’s elite programs within a few years at most.

Harbaugh is the right man for the job but the 2015 season could be challenging and hard on him. The Wolverines went 5-7 overall including 3-5 in the Big Ten last season and welcome back just 11 starters from last year’s team. The overall talent level at Michigan is not where Harbaugh wants or needs it to be in order to be a serious national player and true Big Ten contender right now, but the overall toughness and intelligence that Harbaugh will demand of his players this season should be enough to make Michigan respectable and bowl bound. A few big upsets or near upsets is not out of the question this year as Harbaugh is simply one of the best head coaches in all football, NFL or College Football.

On the opposite side of the field Thursday night will be a hungry Utah Utes team led by head coach Kyle Whittingham. Whittingham coached his tail off last season as he lead the Utes to an impressive 9-4 overall record including 5-4 in PAC 12 play. The Utes capped off their impressive season with a 45-10 blowout victory over Colorado State in the Las Vegas Bowl and that win certainly motivated the 11 returning starters this season to work harder and improve even more physically and mentally for the upcoming 2015 season.

The Utes have been getting better and more talented from top to bottom on their roster each and every years since they joined the PAC 12 Conference. The Utes will be entering their 5th season in the PAC 12 and they are hungry to show the league and their own alumni and fans that they are here to stay and become a consistent bowl bound program as they look to keep moving up the hierarchy of the PAC 12.

These two teams matched up last season in Michigan Stadium and Utah walked out with an impressive 26-10 victory. That win certainly gives Utah’s squad the confidence it needs to get the job done again Thursday night against one of the biggest programs in the sports along with one of the most respected head coaches. Having said that, it is awfully tough for any non-conference opponent to win back-to-back years against Michigan. We look for this game to be much closer than last year’s meeting and for it to be anyone’s game come the 4th quarter. We’ll be putting our money down on Michigan getting +4.5 points as they will be a much more disciplined and tough team this season playing for Harbaugh instead of Hoke. Utah may still win the game but the smart play is on Michigan with the +4.5 points.
