2011 Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Nebraska NCAA Football Preview

2011 Nebraska Cornhuskers College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Nebraska NCAA Football Preview: Several college football teams changed conferences in the offseason, but no team is could make more of an impact in its new home than Nebraska. The Cornhuskers join the Big Ten and immediately become a factor for the conference crown. Led by a talented young quarterback and the Blackshirts on defense, Nebraska could have a debut to remember.

Coach Bo Pelini is entering his fourth season as coach for the Cornhuskers, and he has compiled a respectable 30-12 record thus far. Leaving the familiar landscape of the Big 12 may pose a bit of a learning curve, but Pelini’s option-style offense should transition well. More importantly, the centerpiece of his offensive attack returns in 2011-12.

Sophomore QB Taylor Martinez was at times one of the best players in the nation last season, craving up defenses with his arms and his legs. However, the wear and tear that comes with running the option caught up with him. When he slowed down so did the Cornhuskers’ offense. Another year to hit the weight room should improve his durability, and Martinez had already shown what he can do to opponents at full strength. Simply put, he is the type of player that can transform a good team into a title contender, but he must stay healthy.

While Martinez is the unquestioned leader on offense, the defense is loaded with difference makers. Senior defensive end Jared Crick and senior linebacker Lavonte David lead an absolutely stacked front seven for the Cornhuskers. Meanwhile, senior cornerback Alfonzo Dennard anchors an opportunistic secondary that tallied 19 interceptions last season and took four back for scores. All the main components are back from a unit that ranked eighth in the nation in terms of points allowed last year. Another year of experience could make Nebraska a top-five defense when all is said and done.

In terms of the schedule, the Cornhuskers will get a rather kind welcome package in their inaugural Big Ten season. They get Ohio State, Michigan State and Iowa at home, and the out-of-conference slate should be a walk in the park. A road game against Michigan could be tricky depending on how the Wolverines are playing, but the Cornhuskers are the better team on paper. For Nebraska, the season could boil down to the conference opener on the road against the Wisconsin Badgers.

While adjusting to life in the Big Ten won’t necessarily be easy, the Nebraska program fits the style of play popular in the conference. The Cornhuskers like to live on defense and running the ball, and the same can be said about a lot of their opponents this season. In the end, a trip to Madison will likely prove too much for Nebraska as it has many a national title contender, and the pounding Martinez is going to take will hurt the offense as a whole late in the year. The Cornhuskers will be in the mix to win the Legends Division and play for the Big Ten Championship, but a national title is probably just out of reach.
