2011 Baylor Bears Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Baylor Bears NCAA Football Preview

2011 Baylor Bears College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Baylor Bears NCAA Football Preview: For most schools, a 7-6 record isn’t something to celebrate. However, the record was good enough to send the Baylor Bears to their first bowl game in the last 16 years. Even though the trip ended with a loss to Illinois, ending the drought was a step in the right direction for a program that has been traditionally walked on by a majority of its Big 12 counterparts. With the main components of a potent offense returning this year, Baylor has a chance to take another step forward in 2011-12.

Eight starters are back on offense for the Bears, led by dynamic quarterback Robert Griffin III. Last season, Griffin connected on 22 touchdowns through the air, throwing for more than 3,500 yards. He was equally effective on the ground, rushing for more than 600 yards. His dual-threat ability forces opposing defense to focus a majority of their attention on him, and the Bears have other talented weapons capable of taking advantage.

After all, there is a reason that Baylor averaged more than 30 points per game in 2010-11. Griffin III may have led the attack, but he was far from the only contributor to the nearly 300 yards through the air and 200 yards on the ground put up by the Bears. Baylor welcomes back senior starters at both running back and wide receiver, along with a surprisingly loaded freshman class. Newcomers Jonathan Lee and Spencer Drango should start immediately at wide receiver and offensive tackle, respectively.

While the offense shouldn’t have any problems putting up points this season, stopping opponents will likely remain a problem. The Bears were gashed for more than 30 points a game last season, and a similar number could be in store this year. Worse yet, Baylor’s unit fell apart down the stretch and brings little momentum into 2011-12. During the final four games of last year, the Bears’ defense surrendered an embarrassing 48.3 points per game. It doesn’t matter how many points the Bears can score. If they are giving up almost 50 to the opposition, it is going to be a long season.

The schedule is both good and bad for the Bears this year. They have been a terrible road team the last few seasons, and their toughest opponents travel to Waco. However, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri may prove too much for the Bears anyway. Road games against Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Kansas State could be tough to win as well. Not to mention the season opener against out-of-conference opponent TCU.

This year’s Bears’ team is going to be fun to watch on offense as it figures to be one of the best in both the Big 12 and the nation. However, opponents are going to have plenty of fun facing Baylor’s lowly defense as well. The ceiling for this year’s team is a bowl appearance, but in the grand scheme of Baylor football, back-to-back bowl appearances aren’t all that disappointing. The Bears aren’t the doormats of the Big 12 anymore, but they don’t have enough overall talent to contend for a conference title yet.
