The Contenders

After cruising to a South Division title and the best record in the Southern Conference, the Davidson Wildcats (23-7, 17-1 Southern) will try to continue their dominance in the Southern Conference Tournament. The Wildcats are currently riding a 14-game winning streak, and they lead the Southern Conference in scoring at 73.6 points per game. A potent frontcourt is the strength of Davidson’s scoring attack, and forwards Jake Cohen and De’Mon Brooks are both averaging more than 13 points per game. The Wildcats also have plenty of perimeter firepower with five players having hit at least 20 3-pointers this season. Throw in a defense that allows just 62.5 points per game and a deep roster that plays eight players on a regular basis, and it is easy to see why the Wildcats were a full three games better than the next closest team in the regular season.

They took home the North Division crown, and now, the Elon Phoenix (20-10, 13-5 Southern) will try to add a Southern Conference Tournament title to their list of accomplishments. A balanced offense and solid defense have been carrying Elon, and entering the conference tournament, six players are averaging more than seven points per game, including three averaging more than 11 per game. Forward Lucas Troutman is a potential game-changer for the Phoenix on both ends of the court, and the junior is averaging a team-high 15.1 points to go along with 2.2 blocks and 1.2 steals. Elon took the Southern Conference Tournament’s top seed Davidson to the wire on the road less than two weeks ago, and the Phoenix have enough solid players to contend with any other team in the conference.

Bottom Line

Davidson basically dominated the Southern Conference from start to finish, and the overall talent edge that the Wildcats have on the rest of the teams in the conference is sizeable. Granted, Elon has an excellent player in Troutman, but not even the Phoenix can match the balance and depth that the Wildcats bring to the table. Throw in the fact that Davidson still needs to win the conference tournament if they plan on playing in the NCAA Tournament, and that should be more than enough motivation to bring out a focused effort from the Wildcats. Davidson’s best is simply too much for the rest of the conference, and the Wildcats will keep right on rolling all the way to an automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
