The Favorite – 2012 Big 12 Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks

After winning the Big 12 title for the eighth year in a row, the third-ranked Kansas Jayhawks (26-5) can probably earn a No. 1 seed even without winning their conference tournament. However, that doesn’t mean Bill Self’s bunch isn’t going to try, and considering the Jayhawks have the second-best offense and second-best defense in the Big 12, there is a good chance they will succeed. Kansas has peaked at the right time, winning the final eight games of the regular season. The Jayhawks also have to legitimate starts in forward Thomas Robinson and point guard Tyshawn Taylor. The duo gives Kansas the type of balance in the paint and on the perimeter that few teams can match.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Big 12 Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks

Outside of the regular season champion Jayhawks, the fifth-ranked Missouri Tigers (27-4) are without question the biggest threat to win the Big 12 tournament. Missouri’s high-powered offense leads the conference and ranks eighth in the country, averaging almost 80 points per game. Missouri also ranks third in the country in field goal percentage, shooting 49.9 percent as a team. The Tigers use a guard-heavy lineup to push the tempo and wear down opponents, and Marcus Denmon is one of the best clutch shooters in the country. Missouri split two games against Kansas this season, finishing the first meeting with an 11-0 run to win 74-71 before losing 87-86 in overtime in the rematch. A classic showdown for the conference tournament crown could be on tap.

On paper, the 11th-ranked Baylor Bears (25-6) appear formidable, and against most teams, they are. Baylor has an excellent point guard in Pierre Jackson, and Perry Jones III and Quincy Acy provide plenty of size and scoring inside. That being said, the Bears went 0-4 against Kansas and Missouri combined, and they will likely have to get through both teams to win the Big 12 tournament. Baylor didn’t quite have enough firepower to keep up with the Tigers and weren’t physical enough to handle the Jayhawks. The Bears have enough talent to make a run, but they may have to settle for being the third-best team in the conference.

Although the Kansas State Wildcats (21-9) can struggle to score at times, it is tough to discount what they accomplished during conference play. Kansas State knocked off Missouri twice and split a pair of games with Baylor. Overall, the Wildcats went 4-3 against teams ranked in the top 25 this season. Kansas State makes up for its lack of offensive firepower by controlling the boards and playing strong defense, and if the Wildcats can find a way to get by in-state rival Kansas, they have already proven they can knock off the other top teams in the conference.

Sleeper Special – 2012 Big 12 Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks

It won’t be easy for the Iowa State Cyclones (22-9), but if there is a team that is going to come out of nowhere and win the Big 12 tournament, it is probably going to be ISU. During the regular season, the Cyclones went 1-1 against both Kansas and Baylor, and the win against the Jayhawks alone makes Iowa State dangerous. The Cyclones also lost a pair of close games to Missouri, proving they can hang with any team in the conference. A deep offense powers Iowa State, and six players are scoring more than eight points a game. The Cyclones will need a lot of breaks to fall their way, but they aren’t outmatched in this tournament.
