Study Programme For A Poker Player
Some people play poker online to have fun, and without any aspirations for poker stardom. That’s a great attitude to have. It can lead to a much more enjoyable poker experience than the experience had by those who feel a need to play beyond the limits of their ability. However most poker players agree that no matter what your goals are in poker, it’s more fun when you win. It can also be very satisfying to be in the zone, making correct plays and decisions, even if they don’t always work out.
As with most pursuits, you are most likely to improve in poker if you study and practice. But how to approach studying for poker improvement? Here’s a basic program that should help you improve your game.
Poker Study Program Step 1: Read
Find out which books are required reading for the game of your choice. Get them and read them. Read them not just once but over and over again. It is highly unlikely you will retain everything possible from a first reading of a poker book. Furthermore, the more you read a particular book, the more likely you are to remember and be able to implement its lessons in a game situation. Remember to read critically and carefully and if there are any quizzes, questions or problems in the book, take them very seriously, as if they were taking place in a real game with real money on the line. Sooner or later, there will be.
Poker Study Program Step 2: Practice
The only way to know if you are getting better is to put the lessons you have learned into practice. If you’re not ready to put your full bankroll at risk, a good idea is to find a poker room that offers microlimit games. This can advisably be done by scanning through the poker room’s poker room review. If you’re not ready even for that, get a poker software program or poker video game to practice on. Free online poker games where no money is exchanged are also a possibility, but players in these games typically do not play the way real money players do and there is little you can learn from such games.
Poker Study Program Step 3: Analyze
Once you have learned the poker rules and gotten some poker hands under your belt, go over them and see how you did. This is easier if you play online poker, since you can download hand histories from the site. However if you can just memorize the action from a few key hands in a live game you can benefit. You can even take some notes at the table although this may call some attention to you. Try to see where you did well and where you could have done better, remembering to avoid results oriented thinking, where you let the fact that you won or lost the hand determine the value of the play, regardless of the odds involved.
