Featherweight Bout

Mark “The Machine” Hominick vs. “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung

Mark “The Machine” Hominick (20-9) was on a five fight win streak before suffering his most recent loss to current featherweight king Jose Aldo. He is a fighter that likes to keep bouts standing so he can utilize his outstanding boxing. An excellent finisher Hominick has won nine fights by (T)KO and seven by way of submission.

“The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (11-3) is a fighter that loves to stand and bang but possesses a top shelf jiu-jitsu game. Jung started his career 9-0 and has since gone 2-3 with two of his losses coming inside the WEC. One of those losses came against Leonard Garcia in one of the closest and most exciting stand up battles in MMA history. Jung later avenged that loss within the UFC by tapping out Garcia with a twister.

If Jung (+360) abandons his jiu-jitsu to turn this bout into a stand up war it could be a short night for him. While he has shown a tremendous chin in all his fights he is still human and it got proven when he was knocked out 1:30 into the second round by George Roop. Roop is a common opponent for these two fighters and Hominick (-450) won via TKO just 1:28 into the first. Look for Hominick to avoid the mat like the plaque and beat up Jung with his boxing.

Prediction – Mark “The Machine” Hominick by way of TKO

Welterweight Bout

Claude “The Prince” Patrick vs. Brian “Bad Boy” Ebersole

With his only loss coming in his second professional fight Claude “The Prince” Patrick (14-1) is riding a thirteen fight win streak. Patrick is a tap out specialist racking up nine wins by submission, six of those by guillotine choke. He has fought three times in the UFC and is 3-0 going the distance twice.

Brian “Bad Boy” Ebersole (48-14-1, 1NC) is a veteran of MMA with a wealth of experience and an iron chin having never been knocked out in his career. With all those fights its surprising Ebersole has only fought twice in the UFC. His last bout showcased his excellent ground and pound crushing Dennis Hallman with punches and elbows.

Even though Ebersole (-130) has a very good ground game he is going to want to avoid it in this fight. He will have much more success on the feet where Patrick (EV) will be forced to strike and not work his submissions. Ebersole has lost nine fights by submission so expect him to shy away from takedown attempts and try to turn the fight into a boxing match.

Prediction – Brian “Bad Boy” Ebersole by way of unanimous decision

Light Heavyweight Bout

“The People’s Champ” Tito Ortiz vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

Once one of the best at 205 “The People’s Champ” Tito Ortiz (16-9-1) has won only once in his last seven bouts. His most recent loss came to Rashad Evens in a fight where he was clearly physically dominated. When in his prime Ortiz was a bully, slamming guys to the ground and finishing with vicious ground and pound. Even though he has obviously slowed down a step he still has the skills to win fights.

UFC Betting

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (19-5) was on a seven fight win streak before dropping his last two fights. He came very close to being a three fight slide as he narrowly won a split decision against Jason Brilz in May of 2010. In that fight he was controlled on the ground by Brilz and never got the opportunity to let his hands go.

In this fight Ortiz (+180) should implement the same strategy as Brilz. The primary difference is if Ortiz gets the fight down he has the skills to do much more damage than Brilz which was the primary reason he lost the fight. While Nogueira (-230) has excellent jiu-jitsu he hasn’t been able to secure a submission victory since 2009. He will be prepared to defend the takedown and the difference maker in this fight will be the superior striking of Nogueira.

Prediction – Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by way of unanimous decision

Heavyweight Bout

Frank Mir vs. Minotauro Nogueira

Frank Mir (15-5) started out as a jiu-jitsu standout at heavyweight and has evolved his game to include very technical standup as well. His last two victories have come in impressive fashion knocking out Mirko Cro Cop and controlling Roy Nelson for fifteen minutes on his way to a unanimous decision. Mir is a guy that is constantly looking for ways to improve his game so expect him to be ready for this rematch.

Minotauro Nogueira (33-6-1, 1NC) is a legend of MMA having fought the who’s who list of world class fighters. He uses his heavy hands and iron chin to trade on the feet but his biggest strength is on the mat. Twenty times he has ended fights with submissions and is widely considered one of the best heavyweight jiu-jitsu practitioners.

This is a rematch from December of 2008 where Mir handed Nogueira his first loss by TKO of his career. Expect Mir (-250) to come out with the same strategy as the first fight; keep the fight on the feet and use angles and distance to keep Nogueira confused. While Mir has top shelf jiu-jitsu he will still avoid the guard of Nogueira (+190). If this fight stays standing, and it will, it will play out exactly like the first time these two fought.

Prediction – Frank Mir by way of TKO

Light Heavyweight Championship Bout

Jon “Bones” Jones (Champion) vs. Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (Challanger)

Jon “Bones” Jones (14-1) is looking as unstoppable as any fighter in MMA. In his first title defense after winning the belt from Shogun Rua he systematically destroyed Quinton Jackson. He uses a unique blend of unorthodox striking and overpowering wrestling to thoroughly dominate his opponents. At only 24 years old he is looking like he could reign over the 205 pound division for a long time.

Another man who looked unstoppable was Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (17-2) until he ran into Shogun Rua. Before Shogun no one was able to figure out his unusual karate striking. He uses quick movements to close the distance and exit before his opponent has time to counter. Preferring to stay on the outside and land longer distance shots he keeps his opponents guessing on timing and distance.

This is a very interesting fight with Jones looking so dominant and Machida trying to return to his old form. Machida (+370) will have problems implementing his usual strategy in this fight. The length of Jones (-470) won’t allow Machida to just hang out on the outside and dart in to land shots. Another factor for Machida will be the wrestling of Jones. If Machida darts in and ends up in the clinch you can bet Jones will be dropping for a takedown. At some point this fight goes to the ground and Jones ground and pounds his way to a second title defense.

Prediction – Jon “Bones” Jones by way of TKO
