UFC 136 Odds and Free Picks – Lightweight Bout

Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard vs. Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon

Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard (29-8-2, 1NC) is on a five fight win streak coming into UFC 136. Guillard has some of the fastest hands in the lightweight division which is complimented by his brutal power. His last two fights have ended by (T)KO with neither leaving the first round. His fight in January of this year against Evan Dunham earned him Knockout of the Night honors.

With six of his last seven bouts earning him fight bonuses Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (20-6) is incapable of being in a dull fight. What has plagued Lauzon is a lack of consistency going 2-2 in his last four fights. His most recent bout was a victory over Curt Warburton via kimura just 1:58 into the first round. While Lauzon has versatile standup his true strength is when the fight hits the mat. Sixteen of his twenty victories have come by way of submission and he has earned Submission of the Night three times in the UFC.

There are going to be very evident mismatches depending on where this fight is taking place. Guillard (-300) is lethal with his hands and con knock out anyone with one punch. His weakness has always been his ground game with seven of his eight losses coming by submission. With that in mind Lauzon (+220) needs to get this fight to the mat because every second he spends standing is like playing with fire. Guillard has put together an impressive string of fights and one more big win could put him in line for the next title shot at 155. Bettors can feel confident that he has used this as motivation to sure up his takedown defense in route to a big victory.

Prediction – Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard by way of knockout

UFC 136 Odds and Free Picks – Middleweight Bout

Chael Sonnen vs. “All American” Brian Stann

Chael Sonnen (25-11-1) has spent over a year on the shelf due to testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone in a post-fight drug screening and being convicted of money laundering. With all of the outside distractions seemingly behind him Sonnen prepares to reenter the octagon. His last bout was against arguably the greatest fighter in the world Anderson Silva. Sonnen was able to control the champ for four rounds before he eventually got caught in a triangle armbar in the final round. Like his strategy in all his fights he used his superior wrestling to smother his opponent.

UFC Betting

A former member of the United States Marine Corp and a Silver Stat recipient “All American” Brian Stann (11-3) has already made a name for himself outside the cage. Inside the cage Stann is a stand and bang type of fighter always looking for the knockout. Out of his eleven wins eight have come by way of (T)KO and he has earned Fight of the Night honors twice in his career. He has only been fighting in the middleweight division for a little over a year and has gone 3-0. He started in the light heavyweight division which makes him a very big middleweight.

To add more motivation for both fighters this bout is most likely going to decide who gets the next shot at Anderson Silva. Stann (+200) has hit a nice stride in his move down in weight and it seems he has still retained the power. The problem he will face in this fight is that although he’s a monster on the feet he is a little to one dimensional. Sonnen (-260) is one of the most powerful wrestlers at 185 and he will utilize that to take Stann out of his element. The biggest hole in Sonnen’s game is his submission defense and although Stann has won one bout by submission it won’t be enough to tap Sonnen.

Prediction – Chael Sonnen by way of unanimous decision

UFC 136 Odds and Free Picks – Featherweight Title Bout

Jose “Junior” Aldo (Champion) vs. Kenny “KenFlo” Florian (Challenger)

Jose “Junior” Aldo (19-1) is one of the most dominant fighters in the sport today. Currently on a twelve fight win streak Aldo has been unstoppable. In June of 2009 Aldo participated in an eliminator fight to determine the next challenger for the featherweight belt. He won that fight in eight seconds with a flying knee knockout. Aldo is a rare breed of fighter using an aggressive and unorthodox method of striking but can also wrestle well when he wants to. He’s a fighter that is always first looking for the knockout first and can adapt to where ever the fight goes.

Kenny “KenFlo” Florian (15-5) has bounced around the weight classes of the UFC. He started on the original Ultimate Fighter at middleweight and has since been gradually moving down. Twice he fought for the lightweight belt first losing to Sean Sherk and then to B.J. Penn. It was a loss to Gray Maynard that cemented his decision to move down to 145. He only has one bout at featherweight, a unanimous decision victory over Diego Nunes.

Florian (+250) is going to be the bigger fighter in this bout since he doesn’t have a body that naturally fits at 145. He has to make a big cut to make weight which could affect his cardio if this fight gets into the championship rounds. Aldo (-350) will come out like he always does, fast and violent. Even though Aldo has been dominant in all his title fights this will be the toughest test he’s faced. Florian has the ability to finish fights no matter where they are and has an excellent submission game. Even with this being Aldo’s toughest test to date he still takes this fight and further shows why he is considered among the best in the world at any weight.

Prediction – Jose “Junior” Aldo by way of TKO

UFC 136 Odds and Free Picks – Lightweight Title Bout

Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (Champion) vs. Gray “The Bully” Maynard (Challenger)

Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (13-1-1) pulled off a huge upset when he originally won the lightweight belt over B.J. Penn. Their first confrontation was so closely contested that just four months later they would meet again with everyone assuming Penn would reclaim his belt. Edgar cemented his status of champion that night taking Penn down multiple times and even getting the better shots in on the feet. Edgar is very familiar with the challenger in this fight since Maynard handed him the only loss of his career.

Gray “The Bully” Maynard (10-0-1, 1NC) fights exactly like his nickname implies. He is an extremely powerful wrestler that uses it to control the tempo of fights and break his opponents will. Of his ten victories he has only finished two, both by knockout. Eight times he’s gone to decision because that’s the way he likes to fight, constantly wearing on his opponent and using superior positioning to win bouts.

This will be the third time these two have met in the octagon. The first was Edgar’s (-155) lone loss and the second was in January of 2011 that ended in a split draw where he retained his title. Each time they have met it’s been war so expect the same on Saturday night. Both of these fighters have similar fighting styles; grind it out both on the feet and the mat. This bout is front runner for being Fight of the Year and given the last time they met it ended with a draw both these guys are evenly matched. Maynard (+125) will use his strength and size to edge out Edgar in a very evenly fought bout.

Prediction – Gray “The Bully” Maynard by way of unanimous decision
