ESPN Monday Night NFL Picks: Chicago Bears @ Detroit Lions Odds and Predictions Week 5 – Free NFL Picks 10/10/11

Monday Night NFL Picks: Chicago Bears @ Detroit Lions Monday Night NFL Week 5 Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on ESPN 10/10/11: Last year, the NFC North sent two teams to the playoffs, including the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. The division seems poised to send a pair of teams to the postseason again with the Packers off to a 4-0 start, and Monday night’s showdown between the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions could go a long way to deciding which franchise will be on the fast track to join Green Bay. The Bears actually won the NFC North last season, but the head to Detroit with a 2-2 record, looking up at the 4-0 Lions. While Chicago is just trying to close the gap, a victory by Detroit Monday would be a big step toward ending the franchise’s long playoff drought. It is one of the older rivalries in the NFL, and the Lions enter the matchup as five-point favorites.

The teams played a pair of tight games last season, with the Bears coming out on top in both meetings. Detroit lost the first matchup after a potential game-winning touchdown catch by receiver Calvin Johnson was ruled incomplete. In the rematch, Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler led a fourth quarter comeback and threw a late touchdown pass of his own to seal the victory. Needless to say, there is a good chance that Monday’s meeting could come down the final few possessions.

Of course one key element missing for a majority of both matchups last season was Detroit QB Matt Stafford. However, the former No. 1 overall pick has been healthy this season and has been carving up opposing defenses all season. Not to mention the fact that he has shown plenty of poise, rallying the Lions from 20-point deficits twice in four games this year. The Bears didn’t have to contain Stafford in their wins a year ago, but they will certainly have to find an answer for him Monday if Chicago is going to knock off the unbeaten Lions.

The Bears will also have to find an answer for Stafford’s top target Johnson, who has a league-leading eight touchdowns through four games. His freakish combination of size and speed has allowed him to pick apart just about any coverage. Johnson even caught a touchdown pass amid triple coverage in last weekend’s comeback win against the Dallas Cowboys. If Stafford throws a jump ball at the proper height, Johnson’s height and leaping ability makes the play virtually unstoppable.

While Chicago may not be able to cover Johnson, the Bears stout defensive front should be able to get plenty of pressure on Stafford. If they can keep him on the run or even on his back most of the game, the dominant Detroit passing game could be grounded. Shutting down Stafford completely is likely impossible, but if the Bears can utilize their pass rush to tighten up in the red zone and limit some of the bigger plays, the Lions really don’t have a running game to counter with and change the pace.

Meanwhile, the Bears have the luxury of running back Matt Forte, and he could be the X-factor in Monday’s game. Forte is a versatile back, and he torched the Lions on catches out of the backfield last season. He has been even better this year, and he is coming off a 200-yard rushing performance last weekend against Carolina. The Bears have had serious issues protecting Cutler, and while that could spell serious trouble given the fierce Detroit front led by Ndamukong Suh, Forte’s effectiveness has helped the cause. When Chicago has been able to dominate on the ground, they have been tough to beat.

At some point, the incredible run by the Lions is going to come to an end, but it isn’t likely to happen this weekend. For a franchise striving for respect after being a doormat for so long, a Monday night game at home against a division rival is too big of an opportunity for Detroit to pass up. Stafford and the offense are much better than Chicago has seen in recent years, and Sux and the defense have been nasty and opportunistic throughout the year. While Forte may be a tough matchup, he isn’t going to be able to beat the Lions by himself. Detroit should give the fans plenty to cheer about in this one.

Week 5 Sunday Night NFL Picks: Green Bay Packers @ Atlanta Falcons Odds and Predictions – Free NFL Picks 10/9/11

Week 5 Free NFL Picks: Green Bay Packers @ Atlanta Falcons Sunday Night NFL Week 5 Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on NBC 10/9/11: Last season, the Atlanta rolled to the best record in the NFC, only to be bounced from the playoffs by the Green Bay. This year, the Packers (4-0) appear to be headed to the top record in the conference, while the Falcons (2-2) are trying to build some momentum just to make a return trip to the postseason. The two franchises will meet again Sunday night when Green Bay visits Atlanta in a showdown between two of the top offenses in the NFL. The defending Super Bowl champs are 5 ½-point favorites in this matchup.

If the Falcons are going to avenge their 48-21 playoff loss, they have to find a way to slow down Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He torched Atlanta for more than 350 yards during the playoff matchup, and considering he is coming off a six-touchdown performance last weekend, Rodgers may be even better this time around. He has 12 touchdowns to just two interceptions in 2011 and is completing more than 70 percent of his passes. With those types of numbers, it is no surprise that the Packers bring the top-scoring offense into Sunday’s meeting.

Atlanta has a strong offense in its own right. Quarterback Matt Ryan continues to get better, and receivers Roddy White and rookie Julio Jones are quickly becoming a dynamic duo. Meanwhile, tight end Tony Gonzalez has recaptured his magic in the red zone, and running back Michael Turner is still as good as any back down around the goal line. Overall, the Falcons’ offense may be even more balanced than the Packers’ unit, and as long as Atlanta is on the field moving the ball, Rodgers and company will be on the sidelines.

On the defense side of the ball, both teams have similar strengths and weaknesses. The Packers and Falcons can rush the passer as good as any teams in the NFL, but even by pressuring opposing QBs, the secondaries for both have been exposed. Green Bay has already allowed Drew Brees and rookie Cam Newton to top 300 yards through the air, while Atlanta allowed Tavaris Jackson to carve them up last weekend. Ryan and Rodgers could both be in for big days, and a shootout could be in the works Sunday night.

Turner is a possible X-factor in the matchup. If he can slow the game down and move the ball consistently on the ground, the Falcons may be able to run out the clock in the fourth quarter. Of course that winning scenario requires Atlanta to be ahead in the closing minutes, and that is no guarantee.  Not to mention the fact that the Packers rank in the top 10 in terms of stopping the run this season.

With both quarterbacks likely to find plenty of open targets, the game could come down to which team can make a key stop on defense. Green Bay cornerback Charles Woodson is the top playmaker on the defensive side of the ball for either side, and overall, the Packers have more players that consistently make standout plays. In a game that could easily become a back-and-forth affair, one or two turnovers could make the difference.

In the end, the powerful passing attack of the Packers will likely be too much for the porous Atlanta secondary to handle. Granted, Ryan and the Falcons should pile up some yardage through the air as well, but Atlanta has already shown this season that it struggles when Turner and the ground game aren’t involved. The pressure to keep pace with Rodgers and the Green Bay offense will likely cause the Falcons to air it out, and if Drew Brees and the Saints receivers can’t keep up with the Packers’ offense, Atlanta’s chances are even slimmer. A blowout seems unlikely, but Green Bay should cover the spread.

Week 5 NFL Picks on CBS: NY Jets @ New England Patriots Odds and Predictions – Sunday Free NFL Picks 10/9/11

Week 5 Free NFL Picks: NY Jets @ New England Patriots NFL Week 5 Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on CBS 10/9/11: One of the fiercest rivalries in the NFL will be renewed this Sunday when the New York Jets (2-2) visit Foxboro to take on the New England Patriots (3-1). Last season, the Jets did more than their fair share of trash talking and backed it up by knocking the Patriots out of the playoffs, even though New England won the AFC East during the regular season. The two teams will likely be contenders for the division title once again, but the Patriots are 7 ½-point favorites in this weekend’s meeting.

Despite having Super Bowl aspirations entering the season, the Jets have a lot of question marks entering Sunday’s game. Rex Ryan has taken New York to back-to-back AFC Championship Games by running the ball on offense and stopping the run on defense. However, the Jets have been gashed by opposing running backs the last two weeks and haven’t been able to run the ball all season. On the heels of a Mark Sanchez turnover fest against Baltimore, Ryan has gone on the record saying New York will go back to pounding the ball. Whether or not the Jets are successful will likely determine their success the rest of the way.

The Jets won’t necessarily have to worry about stopping the run this weekend, but they will have to figure out how to slow down Ton Brady and the Patriots’ passing attack. Brady is on pace to shatter several receiving records, and receiver Wes Welker has already caught 40 passes for more than 600 yards. The Patriots also have the best tight end duo in the NFL with Aaron Hernandez is set to return from injury and join Rob Gronkowski. Throw in receiver Deion Branch, and Brady has enough weapons to spread out any defense.

Inside the battle between the Patriots’ passing attack and the Jets defense will be the matchup of Welker against cornerback Darrelle Revis. Revis is regarded as the top cover corner in the game, but he doesn’t typically line up against a team’s slot receiver. If Revis can somehow slow down Welker, it will be interesting to see of the Patriots’ offense suffers. At the very least, taking away Brady’s favorite target should give the Jets’ pass rush a chance to put some pressure on Brady as he looks for other options.

While New England has put plenty of points on the board this year, the defense hasn’t exactly been stout. The Jets will have to take advantage because it is hard to imagine knocking off Tom Brady and company with scoring in the 30-point range. Running back Shonn Greene will have his best chance to date to establish the New York ground game, which should open up the play-action passing game for Sanchez. The Jets have proven time and time again that they aren’t at their best when Sanchez is throwing the ball 40 times a game.

The Revis factor will be an interesting twist, but the Patriots offense has shown no signs of slowing down any time soon. Meanwhile, the Jets offensive line has shown no signs of putting it together despite having plenty of talent. Even though rivalry games tend to bring out the best in teams, the Jets just aren’t playing well enough right now to be considered serious threats. Throw in the fact that the Bill Belichick will be looking for a bit of revenge after the playoff loss last year, and Brady will likely be putting up points well into the fourth quarter as the Patriots pull away.

Free NFL Picks – Week 5, 2011 from Stephen G.- Expert Football Picks and NFL Predictions

Free NFL Picks and NFL Predictions for Week 5 NFL Football Betting from Stephen G at the National Sports Advisors:

I had a bad week going 3-4 in week 4…  I’ll spare you the whining and bitching about certain teams as this is a bottom line business, you either win or lose.  And what do you do when you have a bad week?  You watch more film, you lift more weights and you get more focused!  Well, that’s what we did all week and we’re ready to kick ass this week!

Last Week

3-4 (43%)

16-10-2 (62%)

New York Jets Plus 9 –  Why is this line so high?  Have they seen New England’s defense???  Is it because NE beat Oakland, who beat the Jets the week before? This is one team that has proven they can slow down Brady if not confuse him big time…  The Jets are treating this as a must game and will score on NE’s swiss-cheese D plus I believe they are in Belichick and Brady’s heads…. I see a close game…

Buffalo Plus 2.5 – The Dream Team has issues, okay?  Sure its a must game for them but Buffalo is coming off a letdown loss and will be motivated to get back on track.  I’m circling my wagons around the Buffalo Bills here….

NY Giants Minus 10 – Unless there’s a monsoon in NY or 50 MPH winds, the G-men should wipe the field with this minor league squad from the northwest..   Seattle has some bark at home, but are completely toothless on the road.

Tampa Bay Plus 3 – I like the Bucs outright and I’m betting on SF having a letdown after their big upset at Philly…

San Diego Minus 4 – The Donkeys are going nowhere and are worse now under John Fox…  and he’s got the Tebow problem to deal with too…  I like SD by 7.

Atlanta Plus 6 – I may regret this pick but (A) Atlanta is much better at home (B) they want some payback (C) GB’s defense is giving up a lot of points.  Plus I think Johnny Public will be all over Green Bay here.

Detroit Minus 5.5 – This will be a national TV coming-out party for the Detroit Lions.  The joint will be electric and Cutler will be running for his life and probably will throw up a couple of  pick 6’s…   Not sure how the Bears stay in this game quite frankly…

Free NFL Picks Week 5, 2010 from Stephen G

Plenty of news in the NFL since last week…  Miami’s special teams meltdown and subsequent firing of their special teams coach, Jay Cutler getting blasted by the Giants pass rush and knocked onto Queer Street, Randy Moss getting traded back to Minnesota in a shocker…

I stumbled a little last week and didn’t have the week I was looking for, but hey even the best of teams already have a loss this year.  There’s not a whole lot of marquee games this weekend but we don’t make the schedule….on to the picks for week 5.

Last Week

3-4 (43%)

17-10-2 (63%)

Sunday 10/10

Baltimore (minus 7) – Tough place for the Donkey’s to play, I believe they got waxed 30-7 there last year.  Denver is also on the 2nd East Coast road game in 2 weeks.  Baltimore’s flying high after beating Pittsburgh and don’t want to give up any ground.

St. Louis (plus 3) – Bradford is the real deal and Spags has the defense playing pretty good too.  The Rams are coming on and I think they can win this game outright so I’ll take the points here.

Tampa Bay (plus 6) I don’t know what the deal is with the BenGirls and their offense…it’s been pretty ugly and Palmer is not the same guy.  I say the Bucs coming off their bye week can make it a tight game plus when was the last time the Bungles laid the wood to anyone?

Houston (minus 3)  Look, I’m not sold that the Giants have solved all their problems with the win against Chicago..  If Houston can block halfway decent, the back end of NY’s defense is still pretty bad.  Plus, the G-Men have played only one road game and they were trounced by Indy in that one.

San Francisco (minus 3)  This is where the Niners get off the schneid, okay?  They shoulda won at Atlanta if not for a brain fart by Nate Clements getting stripped when all he had to do is fall down to cement the win.  SF is better than a 0-4 team and Philly has problems at QB and their defense got run over by Washington’s run game.  I think SF with Gore can pound on this soft Philly D that doesn’t play too well out on the west coast.

Monday 10/11

Jets (minus 4) I get that everyone in Minnesota is giddy about getting Moss and all, but the Vikings haven’t been playing well on offense and Moss isn’t going to change that in one week, plus playing the Jet defense in NY on Monday night isn’t exactly the way to get it untracked.  Sanchez and the offense has been the story for NY this year and they are playing with a ton of confidence.  Give me the Fat Guy over the Bald Guy…

Minnesota/NY (Under 39)  Every one of Minnestota’s games this year have been under this number.  Means they’ve played decent defense and haven’t scored much…  They won’t be lighting up the scoreboard in NY either.
