Free NFL Picks from Stephen G. – Week 1, 2012

2012 Week 1 Free NFL Picks and Predictions:
Whazz up, football fans?  Stephen G. here ready to start another winning year in the picks department.  I’ve had plenty of time to recharge my batteries and analyze all 32 teams while playing some golf and downing a few cocktails to boot!  So, while we wait for Romney to cover the spread in November, here are my picks for week 1.

I went 67-60-4 or 53% last year and while that might be a great year for some of you Custy’s out there, it isn’t even close to good enough for me and anyone else at NSA.  And in full disclosure mode, I am not one of NSA’s professional handicappers, just some slapdick that they let write a blog.

Last Season:

67-60-4 (53%)

WEDNESDAY 9/5

New York Giants Minus 3.5  The last time the G-men were defending champs, they came out hitting on all cylinders and looked unbeatable.  Not sure this trend will repeat this time, but for one night I say it does.  Dallas has been popping off all offseason from their players to coaches to their plastic-faced owner.  The Gmen don’t talk, they play, and they will remind the Cowgirls who owns that division.

SUNDAY 9/9

Houston Minus 12  The Texans have talent on both sides of the ball and when healthy, can play with anyone.  The Fish are starting a rookie and have a rookie head coach and a severe shortage of playmakers.  Other than that, they’re pretty good.  They may improve over time, but not in this game.

Pittsburgh Plus 1   The Steelers have not forgotten how embarrassing their playoff loss in Denver was last year and even with Peyton instead of Jesus Tebow playing QB, I say Pittsburgh will play with a giant hair across their asses.

New Orleans Minus 7  A lot of people are doubting the Saints without their coaches and some players, but they still have Brees and that offense.  RG3 should be a good one, but not yet and not in that stadium to start the season.

Carolina Minus 1  A huge divisional game right out of the chute.  If Cam Newton is the real deal, he gets it done here, pure and simple.  Did the Buccaneers magically upgrade their roster while I was playing golf this summer?  I don’t think so….

New York Jets Minus 1   Another big divisional game in week 1 here.  I think the Jets and the Bills are heading in opposite directions but in this one, I’ll go with Fat Rex and his band of players who put the fun back in dysfunction.  They’ll find a way to win and then pound their chests like they’ve won the superbowl.

MONDAY 9/10

Cincinnati Plus 6  I’m going out on a limb in this one, but Cincy usually plays the Ravens tough and Baltimore will be without T Sizzle and won’t have their usual pass rush disruption.  Baltimore may well win, but I see a close one here folks.

Monday Night NFL Picks: Oakland Raiders @ Denver Broncos Week 1 Odds and Predictions – ESPN Free NFL Picks 9/12

Week 1 Free NFL Picks: Oakland Raiders @ Denver Broncos Monday Night NFL Week 1 Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on ESPN 9/12/11: When the Oakland Raiders visit the Denver Broncos Monday night, both teams will be breaking in new head coaches. However, the Raiders are coming off an 8-8 season, including a perfect 6-0 record within the AFC West, and are hoping that Hue Jackson can spearhead a playoff run. Meanwhile, the Broncos are coming off a miserable year and will turn to John Fox to repair a broken defense and improve on last year’s 4-12 record. With the AFC West expected to be up for grabs again in 2011-12, starting the season with a win against a division rival is crucial for both franchises.

It’s impossible to talk about Monday’s matchup without thinking back to last year’s game between the teams when the Raiders abused the Broncos to the tune of a 59-14 victory in Denver. Oakland running back Darren McFadden ran wild in that game, tallying 165 yards and four touchdowns. Stopping McFadden and the Raiders ground game in general isn’t going to be any easier this time around. Oakland has an experienced offensive line that helped the team rank second in rushing yards a season ago.

Slowing down McFadden and company could prove even trickier for the Broncos, considering the defense ranked dead last in yards allowed and points allowed last year, while recording the fewest sacks in the league as well. Needless to say, the Broncos focused much of their offseason additions on improving the defensive side of the ball. Fox was brought in mainly because of his reputation as a defensive minded coach. Meanwhile, the Broncos spent their first-round pick on linebacker Von Viller. The Tackling machine from Texas A&M should immediately help Denver against the run and the pass. After all, he record 27 ½ sacks in his final two collegiate season. The Broncos also welcome back pass-rushing defensive end Elvis Dumervil, who missed all of last season with an injury.

While the Broncos made upgrades on defense during the offseason, the Raiders may have taken a step back. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha signed with Philadelphia as a free agent, and the move could transform one of the better secondaries in the NFL into a mediocre unit overnight. On the plus side, the Oakland front seven is quickly emerging as one of the more productive groups when it comes to getting to opposing quarterbacks. With a mixture of youth and experience, including second-year middle linebacker Rolando McClain, the Raiders could end up masking their weaker secondary with a much improved pass rush.

With Kyle Orton under center for the Broncos, the Raiders will need to do something to slow down the passing attack of Denver. With Tim Tebow seemingly out of the picture with Fox calling the shots, Orton will full control of the offense. Last year, he was on pace to throw for 4,000 yards until Tebow was inserted as the starter for the final few games of the year. His favorite target Brandon Lloyd, who led the league in receiving yards last season, should have an easier time against Oakland this year without the presence of Asomugha.

In the end, it is hard to see the Broncos closing the gap that existed between themselves and the Raiders last season. The addition of Dumvervil and Miller should help the Denver defense, but it likely won’t be enough to halt the powerful Raiders rushing attack. Orton and company should hit some big plays of their own in the passing game, but the persistent rushing attack should take its toll as the game goes on. The Broncos should avoid a blowout, but with the Raiders getting three points, they seem like a safe bet to cover.

Monday Night NFL Picks: New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins Week 1 Odds and Predictions – ESPN Free NFL Picks 9/12

Week 1 Free NFL Picks: New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins Monday Night NFL Week 1 Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on ESPN 9/12/11: Two division rivals square off on Monday Night Football when the New England Patriots visit the Miami Dolphins. The teams were at the opposite end of the spectrum last season with the Patriots going 14-2 and the Dolphins struggling to a 7-9 record. Throw in a vicious 41-14 beating that New England put on the Dolphins in Miami, and it is easy to understand why Bill Belichick’s bunch is a seven-point favorite in the season opener for both teams.

Coming off an MVP season, New England quarterback Tom Brady once again has an arsenal of weapons at his disposal. From slot receiver Wes Welker and tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez to newly acquired deep threat Chad Johnson, Brady can torch opposing defenses in a variety of ways. The Dolphins secondary found that out first hand last season, and it could again Monday night.

While the Patriots are a well-oiled machine on offense, the Dolphins are a team in transition. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are out at running back, and rookie Daniel Thomas and Reggie Bush have been brought in. Behind an underrated offensive line, the Dolphins plan on using Thomas and Bush as their own version of thunder and lightning. However, it remains to be seen how quickly the two newcomers adjust to their new settings, and it is going to be trial by fire for Miami against the team that finished last season with the best record in the NFL.

The bigger question mark for the Dolphins is going to be the play of quarterback Chad Henne. Henne has been a rollercoaster under center, and the Miami front office tried throughout the offseason to acquire Kyle Orton to replace him. When trade talks dissolved, the team switched gears and backed Henne as their guy. He is going to have to limit the mistakes to give the Dolphins a chance against a more talented New England team. Throwing as many passes as possible to Brandon Marshall, who is as tough to guard as any receiver in the league.

Defensively, the Dolphins actually have a solid all-around unit. However, the defense wore down later in games last season as the offense struggled to stay on the field. The Patriots struggled to defend the pass at times, but offseason additions of Shaun Ellis and Albert Haynesworth to the defensive line should increase the pressure New England can put on opposing QBs. Not to mention that linebackers Brandon Spikes and Jerod Mayo are both athletic and capable of getting to the quarterback. More importantly, Henne has shown nothing up to this point to suggest that he can take advantage of a weaker secondary anyway.

If this game was played later in the year, the Dolphins may have a better chance to contend. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, they have to try to break in new set of running backs with an unproven quarterback against a New England team that should put plenty of points on the board. In the end, Brady simply has too many weapons to work with, even for a solid Miami defense. Meanwhile, Henne will likely be coaxed into a few crucial mistakes that turn an uphill battle into a lost cause.

Sunday Night NFL Picks: Dallas Cowboys @ NY Jets Week 1 Odds and Predictions – Free NFL Picks 9/11

Week 1 Free NFL Picks: Dallas Cowboys @ NY Jets Sunday Night NFL Week 1 Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on NBC 9/11/11: The first Sunday night NFL game of the year has the Dallas Cowboys visiting the New York Jets in what figures to be an emotionally-charged atmosphere on the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The Cowboys are hoping that the return of star quarterback Tony Romo as well as new coach Jason Garrett will help Dallas rebound from a disappointing 6-10 campaign. Meanwhile, the Jets are coming off back-to-back appearances in the AFC Title Game and have their eyes on nothing less than a Super Bowl run.

As a bonus, there will be as much of a rivalry taking place on the sideline as one the field when Rob Ryan makes his debut as defensive coordinator for the Cowboys with his brother Rex Ryan across the field coaching the Jets. While Rex has already proven his worth to New York, Rob’s ability to do the same in Dallas could determine the outcome of Sunday night’s game and ultimately the season for the Cowboys. After giving up the second-most points in the NFL last season, Rob Ryan’s impact needs to be immediate.

On the field, the matchup to watch is going to be the Jets secondary versus the Cowboys’ passing attack. Even without Romo under center, Dallas had one of the best passing offenses in the NFL last season. Receivers Miles Autsin and Dez Bryant and tight end Jason Witten should all have even better numbers this year with Romo under center. That being said, New York has one of the better secondaries in the league, and cornerback Darrelle Revis may be the best in the business. The unit loves to play man-to-man coverage, which means Dallas will have some opportunities to hit some big plays. However, having the opportunities and being able to capitalize are two different things.

The other potential problem for the Cowboys is a new-look offensive line that features three new starters, including rookie tackle Tyron Smith. The Jets bring a ton of pressure on defense, and if the offensive line cracks under the heat, Romo is going to be spending a lot of time on his back. On the other hand, running back Felix Jones could hit some big plays of his own if the offensive line lives up to its billing. Garrett wanted a smaller, quicker line capable of expanding the playbook and using Jones’ full potential. The idea is good in theory, but playing the Jets right off the bat is a tough test for a new system.

New York hasn’t exactly been an offensive juggernaut either. Quarterback Mark Sanchez has made strides, but he barely completed more than 50 percent of his passes last season. Receiver Plaxico Burress has been added to give Sanchez a reliable target, but it may take him a few weeks to get into game shape after spending the last two years in prison. The Jets have been a run-first team in recent years, and running back Shonn Greene seems capable of carrying the load this season. However, Rob Ryan is going to make sure his defense does everything in its power to make Sanchez and the passing game beat them.

Sanchez and company will have every opportunity to do just that Sunday night because Dallas is going to be missing cornerback Terence Newman, and fellow corner Michael Jenkins is dealing with a nagging injury. Against an injury depleted secondary, Burress and tight end Dustin Keller should be able to make an impact. If the Jets can establish balance on offense, the Cowboys defense is going to be in trouble.

In the end, the Cowboys are facing an uphill battle in this one. The defense is learning a new system and the same goes for the offensive line. In the meantime, the Jets aren’t going to take it easy on Dallas one either side of the ball. Romo and company will probably connect on some big plays, but the relentless blitzing from New York will take its toll. Throw in the fact that the Jets are playing at home in front of a crowd that will be absolutely deafening, and they should be able to pick up the win and cover the 5 ½ point spread.

Week 1 NFL Picks: Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens Odds and Predictions – Free NFL Picks 9/11

Week 1 Free NFL Picks: Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens 2011 NFL Week 1 Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on CBS 9/11/11: Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will lead the Pittsburgh Steeler on the road to M & T Bank Stadium to take on quarterback Joe Flacco and division rival the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM ET on CBS Sports. These two teams flat out don’t like each other as they place a brutal game twice a year usually withing 3 points with the winner of the season series often winning the division and meeting again in the playoffs as they did last season. Baltimore’s loss to Pittsburgh propelled the Steelers to the Super Bowl where they lost to the Green Bay Packers and the Ravens Joe Flacco has struggled against the Pittsburgh defense which always seems to make the big play to beat the Ravens. Flacco is just 2-6 against the Steelers with Big Ben at quarterback. The odds makers at Bodog have the Baltimore Ravens -1 point favorite at home against the Baltimore Ravens.

Pittsburgh is coming off a Super Bowl loss in a season that was otherwise very successful. This time last year Big Ben was serving a 4-6 game suspension for off the field issues but still came back strong and finished the season with 240 completions on 389 attempts for 3200 yards and 17 touchdowns. Running back Rashard Mendenhall is looking for another solid season he carried 324 times for 1273 yards last year was was a big play guy during the playoffs. The total has gone OVER in 5 of Pittsburgh’s last 6 games and Pittsburgh is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games. Vegas odds makers have the Pittsburgh Steelers as +750 odds to win the 2012 Super Bowl.
Baltimore made the playoffs as a wildcard but couldn’t get past the Steelers but Flacco had another good season completed 306 of 489 passes for 3622 yards and 25 touchdowns with 10 picks hitting Anquan Boldin with 64 passes for 837 yards and 7 scores. Running back Ray Rice led the rushing attack with 307 carries for 1220 yards and 5 touchdowns as well 63 receptions for 556 more yards and 6 more scores. Baltimore is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games at home. Vegas odds makers have the over/under for the total score at 36 points combined of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.

The Steelers own the Ravens and win on the road!

Week 1 Free NFL Picks: New Orleans Saints at Green Bay Packers Odds and Predictions on NBC

Week 1 NFL Predictions: New Orleans Saints @ Green Bay Packers 2011 NFL Vegas Betting Odds, Free NFL Picks, and NFL Predictions oN NBC Thursday Night 9/8/11: Head football coach Sean Payton will lead the New Orleans Saints on the road to historic Lambeau Field to kick of the 2011 NFL football season against the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers with head football coach Mike McCarthy on Thursday night at 8:30 PM ET on NBC Sports. The NFL has hit a home run with this opener as last year’s Super Bowl Champions as well as MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers goes up against previous Super Bowl Champion and MVP Drew Brees and the retooled Saints. The Saints know that the Pack is set for a different situation this year with a target on their backs as Super Bowl Champions which New Orleans handled pretty well going 11-5 last season after winning the big one but lost in the first round of the playoffs as the Pack took the hard road as a wildcard but went undefeated during the playoffs with Rodgers throwing for 9 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards. Let the show begin tonight with the NFL’s pregame concert featuring Kid Rock, Lady Antebellum and Maroon 5. The odds makers at JustBET have the Green Bay Packers -4 point favorite at home against the New Orleans Saints.

The Pack finished the preseason with a 20-19 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs and are ready to defend their Super Bowl title following an outstanding season for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers completed 312 of 475 passes for nearly 4,000 yards with 32 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions last season and hit start wide out Greg Jennings with 76 balls for over 1,200 yards. The Pack is starting out healthier and more experienced than last year so watch out Saints! Green Bay is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home. Vegas odds makers have the Green Bay Packers as +350 odds to win the 2012 Super Bowl.

The New Orleans Saints are coming off a 32-9 loss in their last preseason game which really means nothing as coach Payton has quarterback Drew Brees ready to go against the Pack. The Saints traded running back/special teams player Reggie Bush to the Miami Dolphins and drafted Heisman Trophy winner running back Mark Ingram to lead their rushing attack. The total has gone OVER in 5 of Green Bay’s last 5 games when playing New Orleans. Vegas odds makers have the over/under for the total score at 35 points combined of the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers.

I like the Pack to win and cover in their home opener!

Thursday Night NFL Picks: New Orleans Saints @ Green Bay Packers Odds, Free Picks and Predictions on NBC

Week 1 NFL Picks: New Orleans Saints @ Green Bay Packers 2011 NFL Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions Thursday Night on NBC 9/8/11: Two of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League will take center stage when the Green Bay Packers (-4) and New Orleans Saints kick off the 2011-12 season Thursday night at Lambeau Field. The franchises are the winners of the last two Super Bowls, with New Orleans QB Drew Brees taking home MVP honors in 2009 and Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers doing the same last season. Both offenses are high powered, and both defenses are among the best in the conference. Given all the talent on both sides of the field, it is unrealistic to think that Thursday’s season opener is a sneak peak of the NFC Title Game.

Offense is the calling card for both teams, and both the Packers and Saints like to spread out opponents with pass-heavy attacks. Brees’ main target is receiver Marques Colston, but Robert Meachum ana Lance Moore get their share of targets as well. Rodgers’ go-to guy is receiver Greg Jennings, but Donald Driver, James Jones and Jordy Nelson are dangerous options as well.

The Tight end position could be one advantage for Green Bay. Jermichael Finley returns after missing most of last season with an injury, and he has been next to unstoppable in his brief career. Meanwhile, New Orleans’ Jimmy Graham is preparing for his first full season as a starter. Graham did show a lot of promise at the end of last season, but going into the Thursday’s game, the edge has to go to Finley.

While both teams will look to pass first, the running attacks for both sides should be improved this year. The Packers welcome back Ryan Grant, who played in less than one game last season before injuring his ankle. He was a perennial 1,000 yard back prior to the injury, and his return should help the play-action passing game for Rodgers as well as eliminate some pressure on the QB.

For the Saints, it was addition by subtraction. They parted ways with Reggie Busch but added the much more physical Mark Ingram in the draft. Ingram’s powerful style should allow the Saints to convert in short yardage and goal line situations as well as run out the clock in the fourth quarter of games. Versatile backs Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles will fill the void left but Busch, but Ingram is definitely the new wrinkle to the New Orleans offense.

With both offenses expected to put points on the board, Thursday’s game could be decided by which defense can make the most plays. The front seven for the Saints could have an opportunity to do just that. For all the strengths the Packers had last season, the offensive line was not one of them. Rodgers masked the problems with his scrambling ability, but a good pass rush can disrupt the Green Bay offense. With defensive ends Will Smith and rookie Cameron Jordan applying pressure from the outside and the newly acquired Shaun Rogers doing the same from up the middle, New Orleans may have a chance to slow down Rodgers and company. On the flip side, a solid but not spectacular Saints’ secondary could be exposed if the front seven doesn’t apply some heat.

Green Bay’s defense can bring some pressure as well. Defense end Clay Matthews and defensive tackle B.J. Raji are as good of a combination as there is in the NFL up front. In the secondary, former Defensive Player of the Year Charles Woodson is still capable of making a game-changing play. In a game that could be a back-and-forth shootout, a pick-six by Woodson could be the spark a rally or seal a win. Top to bottom, the better defensive unit belongs to the Packers.

It should come as no surprise that the oddsmakers predict a close contest Thursday night. The Packers are four-point favorites, and while Brees and the Saints certainly have enough talent to knock off any team in the NFL, Green Bay is going to be pumped to play in front of its home fans for the first time since winning the Super Bowl. Couple the adrenaline with a quarterback that is primed to make an MVP run, and Rodgers and Packers are the team to beat in this one.

Free NFL Picks – Week 1 2011 from Stephen G. – Expert NFL Football Picks

Free NFL Picks and NFL Predictions for Week 1 NFL Football Betting from Stephen G at the National Sports Advisors: Finally the 2011 regular season is ready to kick off!  Enough of the fake games and the hype….let’s get this season off to a flying start!  I’ll be picking all the Thursday/Monday prime time games each week along with selected Sunday games.  In case you didn’t follow my picks last year, here are my stats….full disclosure here!!

2010 Regular Season Sunday games:  51-30-3 (63%)

2010 Regular Season Thurs/Mon games:  20-15 -1 (57%)

2010 Playoffs:  8-4 (67%)

Total 2010: 79-49-4 (62%)

THURSDAY 9/8

Green Bay Minus 4.5 – Both teams have prolific offenses and can move the ball but I’ll put my money on Green Bay’s defense being the difference.  They can get after the QB and have lots of ball-hawks in the secondary.  Plus, the last time we saw New Orleans’ defense, they were getting worked by that big offensive juggernaut called the Seattle Seahawks.

SUNDAY 9/11

Arizona Minus 7 – Cam Newton is a little cocky for my liking and thinks he’s arrived…..well…the Cards will provide a little reality check.  The Panthers will have trouble moving the ball and their defense is not going to stone Arizona.  The Cards by 10 or more….

New York Jets Minus 4.5 – Tough matchup for the Boys, they will have trouble passing on Gang Green and generally moving the ball.  The Cowboys are weak, weak, weak in the secondary and will give up the big play.  NY by 7…

Seattle Plus 5 – In a battle of college coaches, break out the pom poms and rah, rah speeches…  this is an evenly matched game, so I’ll take the 5 points.

St. Louis Plus 4.5 – I’m so sick of the Dream Team hype, the Vick hype and all the other hype surrounding this Eagle squad.  I think Johnny Public will be all over Philly in this game, so I’ll go the other way and take the points with an improving Ram team at home.

MONDAY 9/12

New England Minus 7– I really think this line is too high but I’ll go with the Pats anyway…  Miami is not a hostile environment, there will be plenty of NE fans in the stands and its early in the season so the players won’t be gassed in the heat.  Miami might be able to keep it close for awhile, but NE will wear them out and pull away at the end.

Oakland Plus 3 – The Raiders have more talent than the Donkeys and lets just say I’m not too impressed with John Fox.  I’ll take the points in a game where Oakland can easily win outright.

NFL Week 1 Free Picks – 2010 NFL Predictions from Stephen G

Stephen G here to renew my weekly NFL picks section.  Each week, I’ll pick all the Thursday/Monday games as well as the best Sunday plays.  As all long time readers know, and new readers should understand, I am not a professional handicapper for NSA.  I am just a writer for “Final Score Report” and a long time NFL observer.  On to the picks:

Thursday 9/9

New Orleans(minus 5) – The Saints have to be seething at how everyone says they only won the title by riding a wave of turnovers.  Will they repeat as superbowl champs?  Maybe, maybe not.  But what I do know is they will start out strong and show Brett Old Fart, the Bald Guy and everyone else that it was no fluke beating the Vikings last year.  Lay the points.

New Orleans/Minnesota (Under 48)- Probably goes against conventional wisdom to play the under with 2 good offenses, but going against Johnny Public is what I do here at FSR.

Sunday 9/12

Pittsburgh (plus 2) – Beware of the wounded dog my friends.  The Steelers will rally behind Dixon and give Atlanta all they can handle.   Plus, the Falcons are not a good road team and this Matty Ice character may be a one-hit wonder if last year and this preaseason are any indicator.

Green Bay (-2.5) – The jury is still out on this new QB in Philly and there may be some opening game jitters.  Green Bay has a lethal offense and will score points, can Philly keep up?  I’ll take the better team here with a small cover.

Miami (-3) The Dolphins are too physical for Buffalo and can’t see them starting out losing a division game to the Bills in week one.  Is Buffalo still an NFL team?

New York Giants (minus 6.5) The G-men remember getting embarrassed on their home field last year by Carolina and will have no trouble being fired up.  Carolina has a good young quick defense that can limit NY’s points, but the Panther offense is one dimensional.  Can’t see the Panthers scoring enough points and the Giants laying an egg in their new stadium’s first regular season game.

Monday 9/13

Baltimore (+2.5) The Ravens can stop the run game and make the Sanchise have to beat them with his arm.  Plus Baltimore practices against the same defense and can mix it up enough to move the ball.  I’m not sold on the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets, being all that G-O-O-D good, good, good.  Baltimore wins outright.

San Diego (-4.5) I’ll take the best QB in a tough divisional game.  The New England coordinators, sorry I mean KC’s new coordinators will need time to make improvements.  The Bolts by a touchdown.
