Football Roundup – The Jets are for Real, Cowboys are going Nowhere, Packers Average at Best, and More…

jay-cutlerFOOTBALL ROUNDUP – The Jets are for Real, Cowboys are going Nowhere, Packers Average at Best, and More…

Ny Jets – So you mean the Jets won’t be 0-5 after their 5 games like everyone predicted?? Wow, what a shocker. Who could have thought a team with the most physical defense in the league, Thomas Jones and Leon running the ball(wait until that starts clicking), an indredible secondary, and a born again attitude with a great looking QB, WOULD BE 2-0??? I know it’s just 2 games. Just remember the most important game is your next game. Nothing else matters. Also, you can talk all you want if you back it up. As an athlete, I never did that and told my teammates that did that they better back it up or they answer to me. In the end, the 1st time someone bashes you in the mouth on the field, nobody cares what was said prior to the game. If you do, you will lose.

49ers – Another team I love this year. They play on guts and will. They run the ball but also mix the pass in. Their D is solid and physical. Singletary has this team believing it will win. Watch out if Gore starts running crazy. Once again, only 2 games in. Let everyone look into the future. Good teams look to their next game.

Cowboys – Stick a fork in the boys. How can you rush for almost 300 yds against the Giants and lose? Here are some answers: Wade phillips. Wade is a good guy, but couldn’t coach a pee wee team. How many chances does this guy get? Tony Romo. He’s toast. He is no longer the post season gag artist, he’s parlayed that into the regular season. He has no clue who to throw the ball to and is inaccurate. I think he needs to start preparing for his role as a backup QB. Can you say, overhyped??? The Dallas secondary is one of the worst ever. Can’t cover, can’t tackle. Finally, please tell me what Roy Williams has ever done as a wide receiver? He is non-existent. Does he get paid????

Jay Cutler – I grinded him last week and still don’t like him, but you have to give him credit for his game against the Steelers. He didn’t do it by himself, but that is a good thing. The whole team played well. But he did show leadership and had a very calm demeanor. That relaxed his team and they didn’t panic. Gotta give him the credit he is due for that game.

Green Bay – Average at best. Don’t know why everyone was high on them this year. Looks like Brett knew what he was doing. Get back into a division where the girl scouts could contend.

Random Thoughts:

Did Arizona pull it together or is Jacksonville horrible?

I think Zorn should keep Campbell as the Redskins QB instead of Collins. When you throw up 9 against the Rams at home and win, why change?

Instead of Philly worrying about offense, they need to worry about the other side of the ball. New Orleans has a good offense. Wait until they meet a good defense.

Maybe Denver is good. Maybe Cincy is good. That’s too much to think about right now.

The pigskin guy had it right. BYU is still BYU. i was fooled at Oklahoma but they are never going to be taken seriously until they man up. I was dead wrong on that.

USC is just not as talented as past years. That was obvious before the Washington game. QB is young and shaky. Whole team is a step slower than normal.

It would be nice to see Texas play good teams once in awhile. TT is ok this year, but aren’t physical. I’ve never seen Texas have to balance their attack. Play somebody.

Notre Dame did what they had to do, but they should have blown Mich St out. 14-0, 1st quarter, crowd going crazy, and they let them right back in the game. A “W” is great, but good teams pounce on their prey.

Lots more to come. The season is starting to get interesting. I’m calling the readers out. If you don’t respond to me or other articles on this page, I just assume you agree with me on EVERYTHING and think i’m the smartest man on earth. Is this the case?????? Reply to the articles, positive or negative, or I just might win the nobel peace prize. Is that what you want???? Let’s make this page the best sports page on the internet. You have to do it. LET’S HEAR IT. (I must warn you, before you oppose me, that I have a full semester of liberal arts credit from a state school in 1984. So make sure you bring your “c minus” game, comprheday?????)

From the Observation Deck (Vol.6)

wade-phillipsHow bout them Cowboys…. Watched the grand opening of  Jerry’s Big Dallas Palace last night.  We got to watch all the “real winning” Cowboys on the field including Michael Irvin who looked an idiot with his shades and big collared shirt.  (must be back on drugs) Got to see Laura Bush in a luxury box with the Jones’ women, President Bush sitting in another with John Madden (who looked bored while Madden was doing his best Frank Caliendo impression) and about 100 shots of Jerry including one shot by NBC of him picking his nose.  (wonder what THAT looked like on the Vizio in the sky ?)  There was even a football game if you can believe it.  The G-Men pulled out a game that they probably had no business winning, but when you get 4 turnovers, that has a tendency to happen.  You gotta love Tony Romo, he has the unique ability to give BOTH teams a chance to win.  What’s his excuse going to be this year?  No T.O. and no Jessica Simpson to blame now…  As for the stadium, it is impressive, but I think Jerry should’ve saved some dough and bought a new coach and QB myself.  He should be in those Bud Light “real men of genius” commercials.  I can just see it now, “Here’s to you, Mr. Taj Mahal builder of the Lone Star State”, you managed to build a beautiful package for a mediocre product.

New York Jets – Yes it was an impressive defensive effort by the J-E-T-S yesterday and they were the better team yesterday.  However, please settle down Jets fans.  I know this was the biggest win this decade for you and I know you’re all calling in sick this morning to attend the parade, but last time I looked they don’t hand out rings in September.  And all you media pundits who want to declare this as some “changing of the guard” in the AFC East, get some perspective….  This was week 2 and while it showed the Jets are improved, all they did was hold serve.  Let’s wait and see how this plays out over the long haul before you fall all over yourselves handing them the division.  As for New England, it is ironic that it is the offense that is the problem so far, for all the talk about who the defense lost from last year, who would’ve thought it would be Brady & Co. holding them back?

USC gags again – It’s happened again!  In what seems like an annual occurrence, the Trojans lost again to an inferior Pac-10 opponent on the road.  Instead of whining about the BCS screwing you every year, how about taking care of business yourselves?  I know Pete Carroll is a class act and he gets the credit for revitalizing that program and isn’t afraid to play good teams and all, but let me take an opposite view.  Carroll is a decent coach who excels at the college level for all the reasons he didn’t at the pro level.  He’s a rah rah guy whose football-isn’t-everything-in life approach is okay, but it also results in teams who aren’t very mentally tough and have the bad habit of playing to the level of their opponents.  He has arguably the best talent year after year and really doesn’t recruit as much as select who he wants.  For all this talent, he’s only delivered one national championship and has underachieved in my view.  We should consider them the “Atlanta Braves” of the NCAA.

Conclusions from week 2 in the NFL – Can we draw any concrete conclusions after 2 weeks?  I don’t know, but unpredictablity is what makes this league the undisputed leader in sports.  Take a look at last year’s AFC playoff teams, for example.  Tennessee, Indy, Miami, Pittsburgh, Baltimore & San Diego so far have combined to go 5-5 and will be 6-6 after tonight’s Indy/Miami game.  Add New England to that list and it would be 7-7.  Is this an indicator of things to come?  Perhaps, but it IS early and the cream usually rises to the top.

Sports the Way I See It…From My Couch(Volume 4) – NFL and College Football Edition

ny-jets-rex-ryanIn this week’s edition of “Sports the Way I See It…From My Couch”, allow me to give my unbiased, uncensored, and strong thoughts and opinions on what I witnessed in College and NFL Football over the weekend with one hand holding an iced cold brewski(Heineken, of course!) and the other working the clicker(AKA The Remote stupid)! Anyway, let’s get to it…

Thoughts on NCAA Football

Pete Carroll is the Man… Period. While his coaching buddies across the nation(listen up Joe Pa) feast on non conference cupcakes that have NO BUSINESS being on the same field with Top 10 clubs, Pete Carroll simply continues to schedule ANYONE and, better yet, beat ANYONE… ANYWHERE, ANYTIME. USC once again took it’s act on the road and came through this past saturday at Ohio St. Give Carroll his due. He is hands down one of the nation’s TOP 5 head coaches, if not the BEST.

Who’s the BIGGER Fraud? Jim Tressel or Bob Stoops? I know, I know, both of these guys have won a national title. Guess what? I’m not impressed. When you coach at Ohio St and Oklahoma, respectively, for a decade you SHOULD win at least one national title. However, how many times do we need to see these two guys coming up “small” in the “BIG” games before we can flat out say they are OVERRATED? You listen to the so-called experts on ESPN and you might think these two guys can’t catch a break or just have bad luck. Bullsh*t. Tressel is 0-3 in his last three BCS bowl games(0-2 in his last two national title games), while Stoops is 0-5 in his last five BCS bowl games(0-2 in his last two national title games). That’s called NOT GETTING IT DONE. Period. I don’t know why anyone is surprised that Oklahoma lost as -23 chalk in it’s opener to BYU or Ohio St gagged away a late lead at home versus USC and it’s true freshman QB. I certainly wasn’t.

The ACC, BIG EAST, and BIG 10 are WEAK SISTER – Can we stop automatically awarding BCS Bowl game bids to conference champions and start awarding them to the BEST teams no matter what conference they play in? Because I’ll tell you right now, there is NO WAY the ACC, BIG EAST, and BIG 10 are fielding anything more than one(if that) Top 10 team this NCAA Football season. Sorry, but NOBODY from the ACC and BIG EAST are even in the discussion. You want Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, or Pittsburgh in a BCS bowl this January? You can have them. I have no desire to watch ANY of them play against the BIG BOYS from the BIG 12, SEC, or PAC 10. Seriously, it’s a farce that we must watch the top bowl games matchup inferior teams from these three conferences to play against much better competition from the other top conferences just because that’s the way the BCS is drawn up. Everyone talks about the BCS messing up the national title game matchup, but why does nobody mention the way it messes up the other BCS bowl matchups too? Outside of Ohio St and maybe Penn St, who else from these three leagues could even sniff a win against USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, and LSU, among others from the Pac 10, BIG 12, or SEC? Hell, I’ll take TCU and Boise St over ANYONE from the BIG EAST and ACC.

Thoughts on Week 1 NFL Action

The Patriots, Chargers, and Colts. Overrated or 1st Week Jitters? Everyone wants to get too carried away with analyzing how teams looked in Week 1 of the NFL season. It happens every year. Let’s settle down, ok? Listen, the Patriots, Colts, and Chargers did not look like world beaters in their openers against teams that vegas oddsmakers, at least, thought they should have handled with ease. However, make no mistake, ALL 3 teams will be in the AFC Playoffs and will be three of the toughest “outs” in the playoffs thanks to three words: Brady, Manning, Rivers. It’s a quarterbacks league, folks. Those three guys will always give their teams an edge when the games start getting bigger. The Pats, Colts, and Chargers will all be fine people. Settle down.

Will the Jets EVER Learn? One team I despise more than any other in the NFL is the New York Jets. Every single year we have to hear their obnoxious fans and their NY media toadies hyping them up. This year, however, we have to even hear their own players and head coach popping off. Jets head coach Rex Ryan ran his fat mouth in the offseason about not being afraid of Belichick and that he didn’t come to NY to “kiss” Belichick’s rings. The latest was Jets LB Bart Scott popping off on NY sports radio monday about the Jets not being “scared” of New England and Jets DT Kris Jenkins saying the Jets will be treating their game this sunday at home vs New England like the “Super Bowl”. Are you kidding me? It’s week bleeping 2 of the season and teams like New England know that the season is a LONG one. Hell, the Jets should even know that after the way they collapsed last season after being in the AFC East lead after 12 weeks. Here’s an early play from “The Pigskin Guy” for this sunday. The Patriots will roll and win this game going away. The Pats and Belichick are still foaming at the mouth for losing a key game last year at home versus the Jets in overtime and all the chattering by the Jets after that game and leading upto this game will have the Pats looking to embarass the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets in a B-I-G, BIG BIG BIG TIME way this sunday. Pats by at least 2 touchdowns. Book it.

5 Games to Watch in Primetime for the 2009 NFL Season

With the NFL season just a month away, let’s take a look at 5 Sunday Night and Monday Night games that all NFL fans must devote time to watching. They are simply must-watch TV, so kick the wife out of the house, get a six-pack of cold ones, order a pizza, and get ready for some entertaining football! Let’s get to it….

WEEK 1 – BUFFALO @ NEW ENGLAND(Monday 9/14/09)
The return of Tom Brady and the beginning of the TO era in Buffalo make this the most intriguing game of Week 1. Add to it the fact that both these teams know each other well and you can expect a very interesting, hard fought game to watch on Monday Night Football. TO has already popped off that New England will not have an “easy” time of it and you just know he will say something even more brash leading up to the game. Great game to start off the MNF campaign.

WEEK 4 – SAN DIEGO @ PITTSURGH(Sunday 10/4/09)
A rematch of last season’s AFC Championship game featuring two of the AFC’s heavyweight contenders, this game promises to be a fun game to watch. The Steelers, trying to repeat and stake claim to being 1B to New England’s 1A as team of the decade, will look to go 3-0 against the Chargers the last two season’s with a win. The Chargers, who are in the 3rd year of the Norv Turner era, will try to put the AFC on notice that they are serious about getting over the hump in 2009. This should be a highly competitive contest worthy of staying up late for.

WEEK 4 – GREEN BAY @ MINNESOTA(Monday 10/5/09)
These two teams despise each other. The two fan bases hate each other. Does it get any better than that? Minnesota and it’s bafoon head coach, Brad Childress, made a run at Brett Favre in the offseason and allowed the old, washed-up prima donna to play them like a fiddle so he could get some more air time and press before his overrated career(a blog story for a later time, folks) was officially put to bed. Anyway, this game should be intense, as both teams should fight it out all season in what should be a tight NFC Central division.

WEEK 5 – NY JETS @ MIAMI(Monday 10/12/09)
Yet another battle between two teams that simply can’t stand each other. The J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets, and their new loud mouth head coach, Rex Ryan, have been running their mouths all offseason. If it wasn’t Jets safety Kerry Rhodes proclaiming the Jets as having the league’s best defense, than it was Ryan taking verbal shots at Miami’s Channing Crowder and saying he didn’t come to the Jets to “kiss” Bill Belichick’s rings. Hey Rex, here’s some advice, order the salad and win something as a head coach before you start barking up Belichick’s tree. Miami should be chomping at the bit to put Rex and Gang Green in it’s place in primetime.

WEEK 12 – NEW ENGLAND @ NEW ORLEANS(Monday 11/30/09)
The scoreboard operator will definitely earn his or her pay on this game. This one promises to be an absolute shootout and one of the most fun games to watch all season. Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Randy Moss, Reggie Bush, and company will be marching up and down the field all night long and if you bet on NFL games, than you had best be betting on the OVER for this one. Not only will this game be fun to watch, but it also just might decide the NFL’s MVP race with Brady and Brees figuring to be two of the top contenders for the award.
