2015 Free MLB Picks & Expert MLB Predictions – St Louis Cardinals @ Chicago Cubs 4/7/15

2015-MLB-Picks-and-Predictions2015 Free MLB Picks & Expert MLB Predictions – St Louis Cardinals @ Chicago Cubs 4/7/15: The St Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs resume their 2015 MLB opening series at Wrigley Field on Tuesday and the odds makers at Bovada Sportsbook have the Chicago Cubs listed as -125 money line favorites to take game 2 of the series. The Cardinals opened up the 2015 MLB season Sunday night with a 3-0 win over the Cubs behind the superb pitching of Adam Wainwright to ruin the Cubs debut of starting left handed pitcher Jon Lester and manager Joe Maddon.

St Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny will send out right hander Lance Lynn to the hill on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. The 27 year-old native of Indianapolis, IN went 15-10 overall with a 2.74 ERA last season for the Cardinals as he allowed just 185 hits in 203.2 innings pitched. The 6-5, 240 pounder had 181 strikeouts and 72 bases on balls in 33 games started last season. Lynn only faced the Cubs one time last season and allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits in 6 innings but did not factor in the decision or the Cardinals 5-4 win on May 4th in Chicago.

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon will send out right hander Jake Arrieta to toe the rubber Tuesday night in hopes of evening of the series against St Louis. The 29 year-old native of Farmington, MO went 10-5 with a 2.53 ERA last season for the Cubs in 25 games started. The 6-4, 225 pounder was very impressive in allowing just 114 hits in 156.2 innings pitched last year for the Cubs and had 167 strikeouts to go against just 41 walks. The 156.2 innings pitched was the most he pitched in his career thus far. Arrieta faced the Cardinals four times last season and allowed just 3 earned runs in 22 1/3 innings pitched.

We are going to put our cash down on the Cubs Tuesday night with Arrieta on the mound as he has always been tough on St Louis and is coming off of a career year. Big things are expected from the Cubs this season and they did not get off on the right foot Sunday night with a disappointing shutout loss to kick off the Lester and Maddon era in the windy city, but we feel they will regroup nicely and bounce back with a big win on Tuesday. Take the Cubs at -125 on the money line with Arrieta and Lynn as the listed pitchers on your bet. Good luck.

2015 MLB Picks & MLB Predictions – Free Opening Day MLB Picks on Red Sox @ Phillies

2015-MLB-Picks-and-Predictions2015 MLB Picks & MLB Predictions – Free Opening Day MLB Picks on Red Sox vs Phillies: The 2015 MLB Baseball season begins tonight with the St Louis Cardinals traveling to Chicago to battle the Cubs but Monday is Opening Day for 28 MLB Baseball teams including the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies an a matchup scheduled for 3:05 PM EST at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The odds makers at Bovada Sportsbook have the current odds on the Red Sox-Phillies MLB Opening Day matchup out with the Phillies listed as -110 money line favorites with the game total listed at over/under 7.5 runs. Let’s take a look at this exciting MLB matchup and decide who we are going to recommend placing a bet on at Bovada to win some money on Monday afternoon in MLB action.

2015 MLB Baseball Picks & MLB Predictions: Boston Red Sox @ Philadelphia Phillies Opening Day Preview

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell will send right-hander Clay Buchholz to the hill Monday afternoon to start opening day as the Red Sox look to turn their fortunes around after going an embarassing 71-91 last season after winning the World Series in 2013. Buchholz will also be looking to bounce back big this season individually as he went 8-11 with a terrible 5.34 ERA last season. The 30 year-old native of Nederland, Texas certainly has more talent than last year’s numbers suggest, as the 6-3, 190 pound hurler had gone 12-1 with a superb 1.74 ERA in helping the Red Sox win their 3rd World Series this century in 2013. Buchholz was pretty solid this spring as he finished spring training with a 2.84 ERA including four scoreless innings in his last outing this past Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.

Philadelphia Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg will look to get his team to perform better in his 2nd season as manager than they did last season in his first, as the Phillies ended up 73-89 last season. Sandberg will look to get the 2015 season off to the right start as he sends out ace left-hander Cole Hamels to the rubber Monday afternoon. The 31 year-old native of San Diego, California was one of the few bright spots for the Phillies last season as he finished 9-9 but had an outstanding 2.46 ERA. The 6-3, 202 pounder has now registered an ERA of 3.60 or better in his last five seasons for the Phillies. The southpaw struggles this spring with a 5.17 ERA but we don’t put much stock at all in spring training numbers and especially for proven veterans with the talent of Hamels.

We look for this game to be tight and low scoring as both pitchers have the talent to handle both lineups they are facing, although the Red Sox lineup will certainly be a stiffer test for Hamels than the Phillies lineup will be for Buchholz. We are going to place our bets on the Phillies and the UNDER 7.5 on this game Monday afternoon as we feel Hamels is the stronger bet to perform on Monday afternoon as last season’s debacle for Buchholz has us concerned that he may not be ready to get back to his 2014 elite level right off the jump this season.

2011 NLDS Game 5 Picks – Diamondbacks @ Brewers Odds, Lines, Picks and Predictions – MLB Betting 10-7-11

2011 NLDS Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Arizona Diamondbacks @ Milwaukee Brewers Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 10/7/11: The Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks aren’t on the short list of dominant franchises in baseball these days. However, one of these two upstart teams will advance to the National League Championship Series and have a shot at reaching the World Series. Milwaukee and Arizona will meet in a series-deciding Game 5 in Milwaukee. The team has won every game thus far, but after being down 0-2, the Diamondbacks may have stolen a little momentum after evening the series in Arizona. Still, the Brewers are 1 ½-run favorites in Friday’s pivotal game.

Fittingly, both teams will have their ace on the mound for the most important game of the season to date. Milwaukee’s Yovani Gollardo will look to have a repeat of his Game 1 performance when he defeated Arizona’s 21-game winner Ian Kennedy. Gallardo was dominant in the series opener, and for his career, he has never lost to the Diamondbacks. Despite having a rough outing in Game 1, Arizona probably isn’t complaining about sending the NL leader in wins in 2011 to the mound. A pitcher’s duel is certainly possible.

The fact that the game will be played in Milwaukee can’t be underestimated either. After all, the Brewers had the best home record in baseball this season and are 2-0 at home in the playoffs. Not to mention the fact that the Arizona lineup is hitting almost 150 points lower on the road than at home. Psychological or not, the advantage the Brewers will have playing in front of their home crowd has shown up on the stat sheet thus far.

If Arizona is going to advance to the NLCS, the lineup has to produce some runs. Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and the rest of the Milwaukee lineup is just too productive at home to be shut down completely. Granted, Kennedy has the stuff to make things rough on any lineup, but the Diamondbacks are likely looking at needing at least four runs to advance. Outfielders Justin Upton and Chris Young have to be the catalysts for Arizona. Both players have the potential to carry an offense, and they are the two likely candidates to get a big hit.

For the Brewers, the “Beast Mode” rally cry that has been catching on with fans will be on full display Friday evening. The Milwaukee offense has been able to deliver big blows at home for most of the season, and the trend has continued in the playoffs. MVP candidates Fielder and Braun have been living up to their impressive regular season numbers, and either player could deal the fatal blow for the Diamondbacks Friday night.

In the end, the incredible advantage the Brewers have enjoyed at home is just too much to discount. Milwaukee’s offense and pitching has been better at home, and opponents always seem to be out of sync. The Diamondbacks have experienced this first hand already in this series, and they could get an unpleasant reminder Friday night. Kennedy gives Arizona a fighting chance, but Gollardo is without question Milwaukee’s best and most consistent starter. Look for Gollardo to take care of business on the mound just as he did in Game 1, and the Brewers’ star power on offense will likely take care of the rest.

Prediction: Milwaukee Brewers (-1 ½) Cover the Spread

2011 ALDS Game 5 Picks – Detroit Tigers @ NY Yankees Odds, Lines, Picks and Predictions – MLB Betting 10-6-11

2011 ALDS Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Detroit Tigers @ New York Yankees Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 10/6/11: A trip to the American League Championship Series will be on the line Thursday night when the Detroit Tigers travel to New York to face the Yankees in a series-deciding Game 5. The series has been anything but conventional so far with a rain delay in Game 1 shaking up the pitching rotations for both teams. Cy Young candidates Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia won’t be on the mound, leaving Detroit’s Doug Fister and New York’s Ivan Nova to determine the fate of their respective teams.

The fact that the Yankees were able to force a Game 5 could be a key factor in its own right. The Tigers had a chance to eliminate New York at home against the unreliable A.J. Burnett. Instead of taking advantage of the opportunity, they were blown out. Now, Detroit must return to New York and try to eliminate the team that won more games than any other team in the AL. If the Tigers have any kind of a mental hangover from their missed opportunity in Game 4, their chances of winning Game 5 will all but disappear.

Fister and Nova were both forced into action following the delay in Game 1, with Nova outpitching Fister by a wide margin. Both pitchers emerged as solid No. 2 starters for their teams during the course of the year, and Fister was practically unhittable after being acquired by Detroit. However, he had trouble handling the powerful Yankees lineup in Game 1, while Nova cruised for six-plus innings. Not to mention the fact that good things happen for New York when Nova is on the mound. He finished the 2011 year with a 16-4 record, and he picked up the win in Game 1 of this series.

For Detroit, finding a way to get people on base in front of the third baseman Miguel Cabrera and catcher Victor Martinez will be crucial for their chances Thursday night. Throughout most of the series, the Yankees’ pitchers have had the luxury of pitching around the Tigers’ two best hitters, and the supporting cast hasn’t been able to pick up the slack.

Meanwhile, the New York lineup is loaded with hitters that could deal the death blow to the Tigers’ chances. From Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez to potential MVP candidates Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira, the Yankees lineup can’t be pitched around when the batters are dialed in. The 10-run outburst in Game 4 was a prime example of how quickly the runs can pile up for the best home run hitting team in baseball this season.

In the end, the loss in Game 4 is going to be weighing on the mind of every Detroit player. The Yankees were against the ropes with an unreliable pitcher on the mound on the road, but they managed to come away with the win. The Tigers could have a tough time doing the same in an environment as hostile as Yankee Stadium. New York’s roster has plenty of big game playoff experience, and it showed in Game 4. It should come in handy once again Thursday when both team’s playoff lives are on the line.

Prediction: New York Yankees (-1 ½) Cover the Spread

Wednesday Night Free MLB Picks – Tigers @ Indians Odds, Lines, Picks and Predictions – MLB Betting 8-10-11

Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Detroit Tigers @ Cleveland Indians Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 8/10/11: With their loss to the Indians last night in fourteen innings the Detroit Tigers now lead the AL Central by a mere three games on this same Tribe club. It was David Pauley who was charged with the loss last night, actually at 1:52 this morning, when he graced the hand of Kosuke Fukodome with an errant ball with the bases loaded. Doug Fister was only able to work two innings in last nights loss as an hour long rain delay shelved his evening early. Fister, the pitcher brought over from the Mariners, coughed up two runs in the first and he has many Tigers fans questioning if he was the correct hurler to bring over. Aside from Pauley’s slip up in the bottom of the 14th, the Tigers bullpen actually preformed magnificently as they worked 11 scoreless innings. The Tigers bullpen has been an up and down roller coaster all year long but they are slowly coming around and the timing couldn’t be better. The Tigers have the offense to stay alive, the pitching to compete, but until their bullpen can consistently perform and get out of jams then the Tigers will continue to be a pretender.

The Cleveland Indians stand to only be 1 game back of the division leading Tigers by Thursday night and defensive performances as like last night will give them a really good chance. Starting pitcher Justin Masterson worked only two innings due to an hour-long rain delay last night, so it was the Indian’s bullpen that stepped up to the plate and delivered a valiant performance. The Tigers did get their hits however, but each time the Tribes defense would rob the Tigers out of scoring chances. With the Indians defensive performance over the past week they will not rush Grady Sizemore back from injury. Many thought that centre field would take a major hit with the absence of the all-star, but Ezequiel Carrera has stepped in quite admirably and has made the change seamless. The trait of most playoff clubs is excellent depth and the Indians have taken the better part of 6 years to build their depth and get to a position where they are not hurt when a player goes down.

Our complimentary selection tonight will be the Cleveland Indians who will be sending their big trade deadline acquisition in Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound tonight for his home debut. The ex-Rockie hurler has had a rather errant year to this point, but there are signs that point to him creeping closer and closer to the type of pitcher he was last season. The 2010 MLB season saw Jimenez burst onto the scene and he was the unquestioned ace of the Rockies pitching staff. Ubaldo can pitch with power, slow things down and locate, and he has excellent deception, the Indians are banking on this kid to find his all-star form before the stretch towards the playoffs. Jimenez does not have great stats against the Detroit Tigers lifetime, 3 career starts, but he should turn a good performance in as it is his home debut and he will want to bounce back from a poor Indians debut in Texas. The Tigers will send their young hurler in Ricky Porcello to the mound tonight in hopes that he can pick up his 12th win on the season. Detroit is 2-8 SU in its last 10 games when playing Cleveland and is 0-5 SU in its last 5 games when playing on the road against the Indians. The emotions will be high tonight and the fans should turn out as the Tribe will be playing with the chance to pull within two games of the AL Central lead. We will consider the Tribe leaning on the efforts of Ubaldo Jimenez tonight and mustering out another hard earned victory against their divisional nemesis in the Tigers. Cheers!

Tuesday Night Free MLB Picks – Athletics @ Blue Jays Odds, Lines, Picks and Predictions – MLB Betting 8-9-11

Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Oakland Athletics @ Toronto Blue Jays Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 8/9/11: What can be said about the Oakland Athletics effort as of late? The Athletics have used a string of solid series over the past four weeks to shake the criticism of being a old, lackluster ball club. Just recently, they have managed to win series against the Angels, Tigers, swept the Rays, Twins, and are coming off of a weekend series win over the Tampa Bay Rays again. There is no secret to the Athletics success as of late, they are playing hard and have diminished their mental lapses. With their young nucleus of players getting extremely viable time in the big leagues, when otherwise they wouldn’t, the head office for Oakland will need to surround this young talent with some proven leadership and charisma in the off-season. A couple sound and savvy veterans would complement this talented young line-up and quite possibly propel them into uncharted territory, territory the Athletics have not scene in awhile.

The call up of Brett Lawrie has proven to play dividends already and all indications are that he is the real deal. Lawrie batted .400 in his opening big league series against the Baltimore Orioles in which he was able to go yard for his first big league homer. The third basemen is scene as the future of the Blue Jays organization and many baseball insiders are calling the Canadian product the next big thing. The insertion of Lawrie to the lineup means the move of all-star Jose Bautista back to right field, a more comfortable spot for the home run champ. Bautista has better grasp of the fielding game and his long stride and arms makes him a viable perennial gold glover. Lawrie in the everyday lineup only makes Toronto a more lethal offensive unit and many would be pressed to find a weak bat across the 9 men unit. Alex Anthopolous will have his work cut out for him this offseason to build a quality pitching rotation that can give his team a chance to compete in the highly contested American League East division.

Tonight we will recommend a play on the Toronto Blue Jays to open up this three game set against the Oakland Athletics. Toronto flexed their offensive muscles with Brett Lawrie in the lineup this past weekend and they now posses an offense that bares and significant short coming from 1 to 9. Brett Cecil will take the mound for the home club in tonight’s affair as he will be looking to pick up this third straight victory. Since being recalled from AAA Las Vegas, Cecil has featured a new over the top pitching release that has garnered him with much more production and deception. Cecil has, for the majority of his career, performed well below his potential and he has yet to live up to his rookie billing as a solid starting pitcher. If the last three outings are any indication then Brett Cecil is finally maturing into the weapon he ought to be and teams are becoming weary of his new approach to hurling the ball. The Athletics are coming off a tremendous series against the Tampa Bay Rays in which hustle and effort were the main ingredients in their series win, but they may have compromised their effectiveness for their opening game against the Blue Jays. We will consider the Blue Jays leaning on the double Brett’s tonight on way to an impressive victory. Cheers!

Wednesday Night ESPN Baseball Free Picks: Yankees @ White Sox Odds, Lines and Predictions – Free MLB Picks 8-3-11

Wednesday Night ESPN Baseball Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 8/3/11: The streaking New York Yankees and the slumping Chicago White Sox will face off Wednesday in the third game of a four-game set with playoff implications for both clubs hanging in the balance. The Yankees have won five straight, closing to within a game of the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox. Meanwhile, the White Sox have dropped four straight, including the first two against New York, to fall 5.5 games back in the AL Central race. Both clubs know they have to find a way to keep winning if they want to make the postseason in 2011.

30% Sign Up Bonus at SBG Global Sportsbook and Casino

While the Yankees have the momentum, the White Sox have the edge on the mound, at least on paper. Gavin Floyd is 9-9 with a 3.96 ERA on the year, but he has an incredible 0.81 ERA in his three starts since the All-Star break. One of those starts came against the Boston Red Sox, making his numbers even more impressive. Not to mention the fact that Floyd beat the Yankees in a start earlier this year.

Burnett on the other hand is 8-9 with a 4.23 ERA and is trending in the wrong direction. He went winless in July, and in two previous seasons with the Yankees, Burnett has yet to win a game in 11 starts, posting an ERA near 7.00. He does have the ability to make batters swing and miss, and he enters Wednesday’s game with 120 strikeouts on the year. That being said, he can be wild as well as evidenced by his 63 walks.

Offensively, both teams are missing a key cog in their lineup. The White Sox are missing Paul Konerko, along with his team-leading 25 home runs and 76 RBIs, while the Yankees are missing third baseman Alex Rodriguez. However, New York still has sluggers Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson to fall back on, who rank second and third in the American League in both homers and RBIs. Throw in Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter setting the table, and the Yankees are much better equipped to handle the loss of a star than are the White Sox.

Chicago has really missed Konerko’s bat in the middle of the lineup so far in this series. The White Sox fell 3-2 in the series opener, and they were shutout 6-0 Tuesday night, managing just three hits. In Tuesday’s loss, Chicago’s lineup made the very mediocre Phil Hughes look like a Cy Young candidate. Even with Burnett’s late season struggles in recent years, the White Sox batters may be in too much of a slump to take advantage.

In the end, Ozzie Guillen’s club always seems to run hot and cold, and right now, they are cold. Floyd will keep the Yankees in check to a degree, but the White Sox hitters have shown no signs of being able to provide the run support he will need to win. Burnett will be his typical wild self, but he will benefit from a lineup that just can’t get the big hit right now. The Yankee sluggers will do the rest, along with Mariano Rivera at the backend of the bullpen.

Posted in MLBComments Off on Wednesday Night ESPN Baseball Free Picks: Yankees @ White Sox Odds, Lines and Predictions – Free MLB Picks 8-3-11

Blue Jays @ Rays Odds, Lines, Free Picks and Predictions – Free MLB Picks 8-2-11

Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Toronto Blue Jays @ Tampa Bay Rays Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 8/2/11: As the season slate of games is starting to run thin the Toronto Blue Jays know that every game is a must win situation if they have any aspirations of October ball. While many would say this club has no chance of pulling things close the clubhouse of Toronto seems upbeat and ready for the haul towards the end of the season. General Manager Alex Anthopolous did his club a long time favor last week when he picked up the potential packed Colby Rasmus from the St. Louis Cardinals in a multi-player trade. Rasmus, who reportedly did not have a favorable relationship with Cardinals skipper Tony LaRussa, is a young player who has the potential to be a “5-tool” player. He has excellent technique and form when fielding, he can hit to all sides of the field, and he has speed to excel on the bags. Rasmus should blossom under new elements and a refreshing new start, his potential is sky high and he should be a fan favorite in the T Dot. The Blue Jays paid homage to their illustrious history when they hung the number 12 to the rafters of Rogers Centre in honor of Roberto Alomar. The Blue Jays organization has never, and most likely will never, have a second basemen like Alomar again. Roberto Alomar changed the way the second basemen position was ought to be played and he was the catalyst behind the Jays championships in 92’ and 93’.

The Rays are also in the same seat as the Blue Jays at this point in the season in that they are attempting to make up significant ground in hopes of being in the mix when the season ends in two months time. Tampa Bay is coming off of a series victory over the Seattle Mariners this past weekend as they took 2 of the 3 games and now trail the Red Sox by 10 games in the American League East. The Rays were one of the more quiet clubs at yesterdays non-waiver trading deadline and management seems quite content riding with their current line-up to the finish line. It will be imperative for the club to lock up Evan Longoria and David Price this off-season, they are the unquestioned leaders of the club and they still are on the up swing of their careers. The Rays, who were long time losers in the AL East ranks, are having an easier time now convincing top notch players to stick around because of their strong nucleus of young players and their commitment to win now.

Tonight we will recommend a play on the Toronto Blue Jays in the first game of this three game set in Florida. The Jays send their ace in Ricky Romero to the mound this evening, he will be looking to pick up his 9th win on the season. The Jays seem to be more upbeat and lively since their acquisition of centre fielder Colby Rasmus, the club has gone 3-1 since he has donned the black and blue. Jose Bautista will look to add on to this league lead in homers tonight, he has gone homerless in over a week now. As detailed in previous Jays previews, Toronto excels in the first game of series’ and always look to gain a leg up. I expect Toronto will come out swinging against a tough Rays hurler in David Price and look for them to be in the stealing mood as runs will be at a premium tonight. Toronto is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games and is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games on the road. Tropicana Field has long been a fortress for the Rays and a stumbling ground for most clubs but this year has proven the reverse, Tampa Bay is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games at home. We will consider the Blue Jays picking up a hard earned victory against one of the games best young hurlers tonight in what should be a spirited affair. Cheers!

Monday Night ESPN Baseball Free Picks: Indians @ Red Sox Odds, Lines and Predictions – Free MLB Picks 8-1-11

Monday Night ESPN Baseball Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Cleveland Indians @ Boston Red Sox Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 8/1/11: A pair of playoff contenders square off Monday night as the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox host the Cleveland Indians in the opener of a crucial four-game series. Both clubs have a lot on the line as the Indians sit just 2.5 games out of first in the AL Central, while the Red Sox cling to a two-game lead over the New York Yankees in their division. Both teams made moves before Sunday’s trade deadline in an attempt to bolster their postseason chances, and Monday’s game marks the unofficial beginning to the stretch run of the 2011 season.

Offensively, there really is no comparing these two teams. The Red Sox lead the majors in team batting average, runs scored, hits, and rank at or near the top of every other statistical category as well. Meanwhile, the Indians are in the middle of the pack at best in most offensive categories. In terms of runs scored,Bostonholds a 146-run edge overCleveland, heading into Monday’s contest. Led by Adrian Gonzalez – the major-league leader in batting average and RBIs – the Red Sox lineup is without question more productive.

Not to mention the fact that the two clubs have been polar opposites heading into Monday’s meeting.Bostonhas won seven of its last 10 games, whileClevelandhas struggled to a 2-8 mark during the same stretch. Granted, injuries to outfielders Grady Sizemore and Shin-Soo Choo haven’t helped the Tribe, but the rest of the team hasn’t exactly picked up the slack during the recent slump.

That being said, momentum is only as good as the next day’s starting pitcher, and on paper, the Indians appear to have the edge on the mound with 11-game winner Josh Tomlin facingBoston’s John Lackey. Tomlin (11-5) brings a 4.01 ERA into the matchup compared to a 6.20 ERA from Lackey (9-8). Tomlin also boasts some of the best control in baseball, walking just 16 batters all year. He has been stingy with baserunners in general in 2011 as his 1.02 WHIP can attest, and he will certainly need to limit baserunners Monday night in order to handleBoston’s loaded lineup.

Lackey on the other hand, has been a mess at times this year. From issues with his control to a drop in velocity, he has seen his ERA balloon over 7.00 as recently as July. Lackey has been pitching better of late, managing an ERA below 3.00 in his last four outings. Whether the recent surge is a trend or merely a fluke remains to be seen. What is know is that he has struggled in two starts against the Indians this season, giving up six runs in each outing and failing to make it out of the sixth. For what it’s worth, Tomlin notched a 3-1 victory in his only start againstBoston. However, that start came in early April when the Red Sox hitters had yet to heat up.

Despite the better starting pitcher in their corner, the Indians are just too overmatched offensively, especially with Boston playing at Fenway Park. Tomlin may have better numbers than Lackey, but his numbers are by no means elite. Top to bottom, theBostonlineup is filled with hitters that can beat opponents with one swing of the bat. The Red Sox will provide more than enough run support for the improving Lackey, who should be able to manage a depletedClevelandlineup. Expect Lackey to go about six or seven innings, giving up three of four runs. Gonzalez and company will take care of the rest.

Sunday Night ESPN Baseball Free Picks Cubs @ Cardinals Odds, Lines and Predictions – Free MLB Picks 7-31-11

Sunday Night ESPN Baseball Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Chicago Cubs @ St Louis Cardinals Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 7/31/11: Led by two passionate fan bases, the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals have had one of the better rivalries in baseball for decades. The Cardinals will be looking to sweep a three-game series Sunday night as they try to trim the 1.5-game deficit between themselves and the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers. Meanwhile, the Cubs – who aren’t contending for anything but last place – would be more than happy to spoil St. Louis’ run for the playoffs. Expect an intense matchup between two clubs that just plain don’t like each other.

The first two games of the series have been won easily by the Cardinals as their lineup has feasted on Cubs’ pitching to the tune of nine runs Friday and a 13-run outburst Saturday. With the St. Louis lineup on a tear and the home crowd on their side, it is no surprise to see the Cardinals favored by 1 ½ runs in Sunday night’s contest. However, it is a bit of a surprise to see the over/under at only 8 ½ runs. After all, the Cardinals have surpassed that total by themselves in the first two games, and the teams have combined to score 29 runs in the two games.

While the over looks like a pretty safe, it takes a closer look at Sunday’s pitching matchup before the same can be said about the spread. The Cardinals’ Jake Westbrook will face Chicago’s Ryan Dempster, and on reputation alone, Dempster is the bigger name. However, Westbrook has the better numbers in 2011, although neither is setting the world on fire. Westbrook enters Sunday’s game with a respectable 9-4 record despite a 4.86 ERA. Meanwhile, Dempster is sitting on a 7-8 record with a 4.98 ERA. Expect a lot of baserunners for both sides as Westbrook and Dempster boast below average WHIPs of 1.50 and 1.42, respectively.

Neither pitcher performed well in their only start against the opposition. Dempster got rocked for six runs in five innings in a June start against the Cardinals, while Westbrook didn’t even make it out of the third inning in an early-season start against the Cubs. Westbrook has been the better of the two pitchers as of late, giving up two runs or less in his last three starts. During the same stretch, Dempster has been a rollercoaster as he has been all year, throwing eight innings of shutout baseball in one start and getting shelled for six runs in his most recent outing.

In terms of matchups, Westbrook would appear to have the edge. The Cubs are an aggressive, free-swinging lineup and are just one of seven teams to have struck out more than 800 times as a team. Westbrook’s sinker should induce plenty of ground balls as the Chicago hitters swing for the fences rather than forcing the St. Louis starter to elevate the ball and throw strikes.

Dempster is the complete opposite on the mound, relying on a power fastball and slider. Although he strikes out nearly a batter an inning, the Cardinals are just one of seven teams to have less than 700 strikeouts in 2011. They are a good fastball hitting lineup led by Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday, and Dempster will likely find it difficult to overpower this St. Louis lineup. An X-factor could be third baseman David Freese. He is hitting over .400 his last nine games, collecting 10 RBIs during the stretch. If Dempster decides to pitch around Pujols and Holliday, Freese and his hot bat could blow the game open.

In the end, the Cardinals are simply the much better team. As mediocre as Westbrook is, he won’t have to be dominant to pick up the victory in Sunday’s contest. Expect Dempster to give up a big homerun at some point as the Cardinals blow the game open with a big inning as they have in the first two games of the series. St. Louis brings one of the more disciplined lineups against a Cubs’ pitching staff that has been terrible. There is a reason the first two games of the series have been blowouts in favor of the Cardinals.
