2012 NFL Power Rankings: Top 5 Super Bowl XLVII Contenders

2012 NFL Power Rankings: Top 5 Super Bowl XLVII Contenders: Just three weeks remain in the NFL season, and the battle for playoff seeding is heating up. The latest installment of Power Rankings has a mixture of teams that have already clinched division titles and those that still have some work to do. However, one team that fell out of the top 5 is the Houston Texans. Despite being 11-2 and sitting tied for the best record in the NFL, two ugly losses and an overtime win against a terrible Jacksonville team have raised serious question about whether the Texans and real contenders. Houston’s tumble has opened the door for some other teams, and here is how the top teams stack up.

YouWager Sportsbook

2012 NFL Power Rankings: Top 5 Super Bowl XLVII Contenders

1.      New England Patriots (10-3)

The Patriots clobbered the Texans right out of the Power Rankings, and in the process, assumed the top spot themselves. Led by quarterback Tom Brady, New England’s offense has been a juggernaut all year despite some injuries to the receiving corps. Meanwhile, the defense keeps getting better, and the Patriots lead the NFL in turnover differential by a wide margin. Brady may be playing as well as he ever has, and this may be the most balanced team on both sides of the ball New England has had in several years. Brady could be looking at a sixth Super Bowl appearance.

2.      Denver Broncos (10-3)

Since Peyton Manning shook off some early season rust, the Broncos have literally been unbeatable. Denver has reeled off eight straight wins and has already sewn up the AFC West. Overall, the Broncos have been one of the most balanced teams in the league. The offense currently ranks second in the NFL in points per game while the defense has allowed the fourth-fewest points and the fewest in the AFC. With Manning staking the Broncos to early leads on a regular basis Von Miller, Elvis Dumervil and the rest of the pass rushers have been free to attack on a regular basis, and Denver currently ranks second in sacks. A powerful offense and dominant pass rush has the Broncos looking like a Super Bowl contender.

3.      San Francisco 49ers (9-3-1)

Although making the move to Colin Kaepernick at quarterback creates a bit of uncertainty, the 49ers’ recipe for success remains the same. San Francisco’s defense is still the stingiest in football, and Frank Gore heads the league’s second-best rushing attack. At the end of the day, the 49ers physically punish opponents on both sides of the ball, and come playoff time, there is never a substitute for a strong defense and reliable running game.

4.      New York Giants (8-5)

At the start of the season, I said the Giants would win the Super Bowl as long as they could make the playoffs. As Eli Manning and company cling to a one-game lead in the NFC East despite having the third-best scoring offense and a top-10 defense, I still feel the same way. At their best, the Giants are the best team in the NFL, and they have dominating wins against San Francisco and Green Bay to prove it. Unfortunately, they take almost half of the regular season off, and it could end up costing them. New York probably has to win two of the final three games to secure a playoff spot, and if they do, the rest of the NFC needs to be worried.

5.      Green Bay Packers (9-4)

The offense hasn’t been the thing of beauty that it was a year ago, but the Packers have been resilient and are leading the NFC North. Injuries have followed Green Bay all year, and whether it is Jordy Nelson and Greg Jennings on offense or Clay Matthews and Charles Woodson on defense, the Packers have never really been 100 percent. The running game could definitely improve, but a stronger defense has Green Bay more well-rounded than it was a year ago. Assuming the Packers get all their parts back in time for the playoffs, they could make the Super Bowl run everyone expected last season.

2012 NFL Picks and Predictions: Top 5 MVP Candidates

2012 NFL Picks and Predictions: Top 5 MVP Candidates: With just three weeks remaining the NFL’s regular season, the race for this year’s Most Valuable Player Award is heating up. Unlike in years past, there isn’t a clear frontrunner or even one or two players that have separated themselves. Instead, there are at least a handful of candidates changing positions by the week, and it looks like the MVP race is going to go down to the wire. With that in mind, here is a look at how the leading candidates stack up heading into the final few games.

YouWager Sportsbook

2012 NFL Picks and Predictions: Top 5 MVP Candidates

1.      Adrian Peterson, Running Back, Minnesota Vikings

I have watched the Vikings play a lot this year, and two things have become apparent. Peterson must be a robot or at the very least a cyborg of some sort and quarterback Christian Ponder is terrible. Despite having no passing game to take pressure off of him, Peterson is leading the NFL in rushing with 1,600 yards and is averaging 6.0 yards per carry. In fact, he has rushed for more than 300 yards than the next closest player and has Minnesota in playoff contention basically by himself. Every team that faces the Vikings knows that it has to shut down Peterson to win, but he still finds a way to gash opponents anyway. The guy has been a workhorse and a stud and has been piling up incredible numbers despite being a few months removed from knee surgery.

2.      Tom Brady, Quarterback, New England Patriots

Aaron Hernandez, Rob Gronkowski and Wes Welker have all missed time and been banged up, but the Patriots have been the highest-scoring offense in the NFL thanks to Brady. He owns the top quarterback rating, ranks third in passing touchdowns and is fifth in yards. More importantly, Brady has been the model of efficiency, tossing his 29 touchdowns while throwing just four interceptions. He has been carving up defenses all season, and it doesn’t seem to matter who he has around him catching the ball. The Patriots are 10-3 and have now won at least 10 games in each of the last 10 years.

3.      Peyton Manning, Quarterback, Denver Broncos

He hasn’t missed a beat since returning from neck surgery that cost him all of last season. Manning is fourth in the NFL in quarterback rating and leading the league in total QBR. His 30 touchdowns are the second most in the league, and he also owns the second-best completion percentage. Most importantly, he has the Broncos sitting at 10-3 and heading to the playoffs as AFC West champs. He already has four MVPs to his credit, and he could be adding another one after this season is over.

4.      Aaron Rodgers, Quarterback, Green Bay Packers

After his unbelievable numbers last season, Rodgers has become a victim of his own success. Yes, his numbers have taken a dip, but he is still in the top five in quarterback rating, completion percentage and touchdowns. Not to mention the fact that he has piled up his numbers despite having no running game to back him up, a banged up receiving corps and being sacked more than any QB in the league. In many ways, Rodgers has done even more for his team this year than last. It hasn’t been as pretty, but it has been gritty, gutsy and MVP worthy.

5.      Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Indianapolis Colts

He has as many touchdowns as interceptions and doesn’t make the flashy plays of fellow rookie QB Robert Griffin III, but Luck deserves to be in the MVP conversation for the simple fact that he has the Colts winning games. Keep in mind that this team won two games a year ago and was the worst in the NFL. The only major change to the roster was drafting Luck, and now, they are sitting at 9-4 with a great shot at making the playoffs. Luck has already helped Indianapolis improve its win total by seven games and is closing in on 4,000 yards in the process. If the Colts win 10-plus games and secure a playoff spot, Luck deserves Rookie of the Year honors and maybe even the MVP.

2012 NFL Picks and Predictions: Midseason Awards

2012 NFL Picks and Predictions: Midseason Awards: The 2012 NFL regular season is just past its halfway point, and it is time to take a look at which players are on track to take home some serious hardware at year’s end. Some of the names of the frontrunners are very familiar, but there are plenty of surprises on the list, as well. Granted, there are still plenty of games remaining, and the pecking order can change dramatically in a matter of weeks. However, it never hurts to take a look at which players are leading the way as teams prepare for the stretch run.

YouWager Sportsbook

2012 NFL Picks and Predictions: Midseason Awards

Most Valuable Player: Peyton Manning, Quarterback, Denver Broncos

It is safe to say that Manning’s neck is doing just fine following the surgeries that kept him out all of last season. He is currently leading the NFL with a 108.6 quarterback rating, a 69.5 completion percentage and an 8.2 yards per attempt average. Manning is also third in yards per game (300.5) and touchdowns (20), and he has Denver leading the AFC West and averaging the fourth-most points in the NFL. If he remains the NFL’s tor-rated passer and guides the Broncos into the playoffs, another MVP trophy will likely be headed his way.

Defensive Player of the Year: J.J. Watt, Defensive End, Houston Texans

It is scary to think he is only in his second year in the league. Watt currently leads the NFL with 10.5 sacks, and his 10 pass deflections are by far the most of any defensive linemen. When you factor in that he plays in a 3-4 scheme, his level of production becomes even more impressive. Watt has been the most dominant defensive linemen in the game thus far and has been the anchor of a Houston defense that ranks in the top five in fewest yards and fewest points allowed. The award is his to lose right now.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Indianapolis Colts

Tampa Bay’s Doug Martin is coming on strong, but Luck has the edge for now. He is fresh off a 433-yard performance that set a record the most passing yards in a single game by a rookie, and he has already tied the record for most 300-yard passing games by a rookie. More importantly, Luck and the Colts have won four of their last five games and are in the thick of the playoff race in the AFC. This was the same Indianapolis team that went 2-14 last year, and the only major addition has been Luck. No, he isn’t Peyton Manning, but he has a roster that could barely win a game last year in the playoff conversation. A QBs No. 1 job is to win games, and Luck is doing just that and throwing for a ton of yards in the process.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Bobby Wagner, Linebacker, Seattle Seahawks

Fellow rookie linebacker Luke Kuechly ranks second in the NFL in tackles, but Wagner ranks in the top 10 in tackles and actually has one more solo tackle than Kuechly. Wagner also has 2.0 sacks and has been coming on strong with double-digit tackles in three of his last four games. The real tiebreaker between these two rising stars at the position is that Wagner has helped transformed Seattle’s defense into one of the best in the NFL. Midway through the year, the Seahawks rank in the top five in fewest points and fewest yards allowed.

Comeback Player of the Year: Adrian Peterson, Running Back, Minnesota Vikings

Peyton Manning could easily win this award, as well, but while he had most of last season to recover, Peterson suffered a torn ACL at the end of last season. Nobody would have blamed him for missing games at the start of the year or starting slow, but Peterson found the end zone twice in Week 1 and hasn’t slowed down since. He currently leads the NFL with 957 rushing yards, and his 5.7 yards per carry is the second-best average in the league. Not to mention the fact that Peterson is getting better. He has topped 120 yards in three straight games and scored at least one touchdown in each of those games. It is almost unbelievable that a running back can suffer a bad late-season knee injury and still be the best player at this position a few months later. Peterson pretty much has this award wrapped up already.

Coach of the Year: Bruce Arians, Indianapolis Colts

It would have been easy for Indianapolis’ season to derail when head coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia and forced off of the sidelines. Instead, Arians has held the team together, and the Colts are 4-1 since the unfortunate circumstances forced him into the head coaching role. Yes, it helps that rookie quarterback Andrew Luck has been every bit as great as advertised, but Arians deserves his share of the credit, as well. He stepped into a horrible situation and has his team on pace to make the playoffs. If the Colts do end up reaching the postseason, Arians has to be considered the Coach of the Year.

2012 NFL Picks: Philadelphia Eagles Over/Under Odds, Schedule, NFC and Super Bowl Odds

2012 NFL Team Predictions: Philadelphia Eagles Vegas Over/Under Odds, Schedule and Forecast: On paper, the Philadelphia Eagles looked like a frontrunner to win a championship heading into the 2011 season. Speedy playmakers lined both sides of the ball, and the players themselves were so confident that they self-titled their group the Dream Team. However, a nightmarish start to the season brought criticism and questions, and talk of a title quickly changed to talk of blowing up the team. Despite failing miserably to meet the high expectations, the Eagles did close the season on a four-game winning streak to finish 8-8. They still missed the playoffs, but heading into the 2012 with a little momentum for a franchise that is still loaded with talented players.

SBG Global Sportsbook

Despite all the problems that the Eagles experienced last year, their offense still ranked in the top 10 in scoring and fourth in yards per game. They have all the tools to be even better, but it starts with the health of quarterback Michael Vick. He has improved as a pocket passer, but his ability to make big plays outside of the pocket sets him apart from other players at his position. However, his constant scrambling has led to a multitude of injuries last season. At 100 percent, Vick has shown he can be almost unstoppable, but Philadelphia has assume he will be banged up or even out for at least a couple of games.

On the plus side, the Eagles have the weapons to win games even without Vick at full strength. Running back LeSean McCoy has emerged as one of the three best backs in the game, blending incredible speed and agility with muscle around the goal line. More importantly, receivers Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson should both be better in 2012. Maclin is fully healthy after missing time and playing hurt last year, and Jackson should go back to being a dominant deep threat now that he doesn’t have to focus on his contract issue. Throw in tight end Brent Celek, and Philadelphia doesn’t need Vick to make all the plays with his legs in order for the Eagles to score a lot of points.

Of course, scoring points wasn’t the biggest issue for the Eagles last season. A speedy defense was supposed to one of the best in the NFL, but a lack of size on the defensive front allowed opponents to control the line of scrimmage. Philadelphia’s speed on defense did allow the unit to lead the NFL with 50.0 sacks, but fixing the run defense was the top priority in the offseason. Linebacker DeMeco Ryans was signed at middle linebacker, and a first-round pick was used to add defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. The added size and strength in the middle of a defense that features two excellent pass rushers at defensive end and two strong corners in Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie could be the final piece to a championship-caliber unit.

When the Eagles closed last season on a four-game winning streak, we got a look at just how good this team could be. The defense allowed just 11.5 points per game during the streak, while the offense scored 31.3 points per game. On paper, Philadelphia looks even better than they did last season, but the team knows all too well from last year that championships aren’t won on paper. Still, the talent level on this team is undeniable. With size, speed and plenty of playmakers, the Eagles have all the weapons to make amends for last year’s failure. Look for Vick and company to win the NFC East and make a run at the title they never had a chance to pursue last season.

2012 NFL Picks: San Francisco 49ers Over/Under Odds, Schedule, NFC and Super Bowl Odds

2012 NFL Team Predictions: San Francisco 49ers Vegas Over/Under Odds, Schedule and Forecast: What a difference a year makes, and a coach makes for that matter. One season after watching the Seattle Seahawks win their division with a 7-9 record, the San Francisco 49ers dominated the NFC West, finishing 13-3 and reaching the conference title game before falling to the eventual champion New York Giants. It was one heck of a year for first-year coach Jim Harbaugh, who proved that his success at Stanford wasn’t tied only to Andrew Luck. In fact, it can be argued that his success with San Francisco is even more impressive because he made Alex Smith look like a solid NFL QB after the former No. 1 overall pick had been a bust in his previous five seasons. The only question now is whether Harbaugh’s second season at the helm will bring a sophomore slump or another run at a Super Bowl.

SBG Global Sportsbook

While Harbaugh’s ability to bring out the best in Smith got a lot of attention, the strength of this team is its defense. San Francisco allowed the second-fewest points and third-fewest yards per game last year. The 49ers also allowed the fewest rushing yards per game of any team, had the second-most interceptions, and ranked in the top 10 in sacks. The unit is loaded with playmakers at every level and it shows. Whether it is Justin Smith up front, Patrick Willis in the middle or Dashon Goldson in the secondary, San Francisco’s defense is stingy, hard-hitting and talented. Heck, Aldon Smith came off the bench as a rookie last year to record 14.0 sacks. With the rest of the division still in disarray, the 49ers’ defense alone should carry the team to another NFC West crown.

Of course, Harbaugh and company no doubt have bigger goals in 2012 after coming so close to playing for a championship last year, and this team’s Super Bowl dreams depend on the play of the offense. San Francisco’s best weapon is its power running game, and the 49ers ranked eighth in the NFL in rushing last season. Tackles Joe Staley and Anthony Davis bookend a solid offensive line, and when running back Frank Gore is healthy, he is still a workhorse. The 49ers also have Kendall Hunter and rookie LaMichael James to spell Gore or simply change the pace.

With the running game already reliable, the offseason was spent trying to upgrade the passing attack. Even though Smith had his best year as a pro, the 49ers averaged the third-fewest passing yards in the NFL. Tight end Vernon Davis and receiver Michael Crabtree are the returning starters, and newcomers Mario Manningham and Randy Moss will join the mix, as well. Davis showed in last year’s playoffs that he has star potential, and Crabtree finally showed signs of becoming a solid possession receiver. Meanwhile Manningham should be able to help stretch the field, and Moss could be a game changer if he is actually focused. Even if the new additions don’t pan out, the 49ers passing attack shouldn’t be any worse, and they have already shown the can win by running the ball and playing defense. It was a low-risk move on the part of San Francisco.

Overall, the 49ers are in a great situation. The NFC West is a joke of a division, and San Francisco would have to fall on its face not to repeat as champs as make the playoffs. Meanwhile, the 49ers’ ability to run the ball and stop the run has always been a recipe for winning close games on big stages, and with a few more playmakers in the mix on offense, Smith and company might just be able to make the extra big play or two that gets them over the hump. Either way, the 49ers appear to be one of the best all-around teams in the NFL, and they have Super Bowl potential.

2012 NFL Picks: Green Bay Packers Over/Under Odds, Schedule, NFC and Super Bowl Odds

2012 NFL Team Predictions: Green Bay Packers Vegas Over/Under Odds, Schedule and Forecast:The Green Bay Packers were rolling last season. Fresh off a Super Bowl title, they flirted with an undefeated season and ultimately finished 15-1, winning the NFC North and compiling the best record in the NFL. Back-to-back championships seemed almost inevitable at times, but another title run ended before it really even began. Green Bay lost to the eventual champion New York Giants in the divisional round of the playoffs, and after losing just one game during the regular season, the Packers exited the postseason without winning a game. It was no doubt a bitter end to a promising year, but with a high-powered offense still intact, don’t close the window on a possible Green Bay dynasty just yet.

SBG Global Sportsbook

At the center of the offensive attack is quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The defending MVP had arguably the most efficient season ever by QB. He finished the year with 45 touchdowns compared to just six interceptions, posting by far the highest quarterback rating in the league. Rodgers has a cannon for an arm and is deadly accurate, and his ability move around outside the pocket adds an almost-unfair dimension to his game. Since becoming a starter, his average season has been 4,259 yards and 33 touchdowns. As long as he is under center, the Packers’ offense is dangerous.

While Rodgers it the biggest reason that Green Bay led the NFL in scoring last year, the fact that he has plenty of weapons at his disposal doesn’t hurt. Receivers Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson both have big play speed, and tight end Jermichael Finley is one of the most athletic players at his position. Veteran receivers Donald Driver and James Jones are reliable targets, as well, and second-year receiver Randall Cobb should only see his role expand after being one of the top kick returners in the game as a rookie. In short, this offense is loaded, and with veteran center Jeff Saturday brought in to bolster an improving offense line, the Packers should easily approach or even exceed their 35.0 points per game average from a year ago.

Of course, the reason that Green Bay wasn’t able to repeat as champs was because of its defense. The unit ranked in the bottom half of the league in scoring defense, allowing more than 22 points a game. The Packers did actually lead the NFL with 31 interceptions last year, but that stat is deceiving. Green Bay allowed more passing yards than any other team last year, and teams threw the ball so much against the Packers’ struggling secondary that they had added opportunities to make a few big plays. The pass rush was equally at fault, and the Packers tied for third-fewest sacks in the league last year. In attempt to fix the issue in 2012, Green Bay drafted defensive end Jerel Worthy and outside linebacker Nick Perry. Both players were strong pass rushers in college, and they should provide an immediate boost. If Green Bay can get more pressure on opposing QBs this season, the secondary will also improve by default.

As if this team needed help compiling a solid record, Green Bay has the NFC West and AFC South on their schedule, which will more than offset the fact that the Packers play in one of the better divisions in the NFL. Granted, playing in the NFC North and all the defending division winners will make an undefeated season difficult, but a division title is well within Green Bay’s reach. In fact, Rodgers and company have enough offense firepower to challenge for the best record in the conference. If the defense can improve, another Super Bowl run could be on tap for the Packers.

2012 NFL Picks: Baltimore Ravens Over/Under Odds, Schedule, AFC and Super Bowl Odds

2012 NFL Team Predictions: Baltimore Ravens Vegas Over/Under Odds, Schedule and Forecast: Last year, the Baltimore Ravens literally had a Super Bowl trip within their grasp. Facing the New England Patriots in the AFC title game, quarterback Joe Flacco hit receiver Lee Evans with a potential go-ahead touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, only to have Evans fail to hold on to the ball. A game-tying field goal attempt also sailed wide, ending Baltimore’s seasons in heartbreaking fashion. The silver lining is that all the important parts are back from last year’s group, but on the other hand, recovering from the mental blow of coming so close to reaching the Super Bowl can be just as bad as the hangover that comes with winning a championship. Fortunately for the Ravens, they have the type of veteran leadership that could allow them to finish what they started last season.

SBG Global Sportsbook

Since winning the Super Bowl in 2000, the calling card of the Ravens has been their defense. Veterans Ray Lewis and Ed Reed lead the unit, and while the critics have said the future Hall of Famers have lost a step, it doesn’t show on paper. Last year, Baltimore allowed the third-fewest points and the third-fewest yards. The defense also ranked second in sacks and forced more fumbles than any other team. With younger stars like nose tackle Haloti Ngata, linebacker Jameel McClain and corner Lardarius Webb supporting Lewis and Reed, this unit figures to be among the best in the game once again. Not to mention that defending Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs will be back from an Achilles injury sometime in the middle of the season to provide an added boost for the stretch run.

While the defense has been dominant and reliable for years, the offense has often been inconsistent. In fact, there have been years when even a mediocre offense would have been enough to take Baltimore to a Super Bowl. Flacco has taken the brunt of the criticism for the team’s playoff failures, but the young QB has still helped the Ravens reach the playoffs in four straight seasons and win at least one game once there. More importantly, Flacco would have already answered the critics and Evans just held on to the ball against New England last season. With a solid possession receiver in Anquan Boldin, a speedy deep threat in Torrey Smith and two solid tight ends, Flacco has the weapons to have a career year.

With Flacco and the passing attack steadily improving, it should only make life easier on Ray Rice and the running game. Rice may be the best all-around back in the NFL, and he is the most reliable weapon for the Baltimore offense. He has the speed to score from anywhere on the field, the strength to get the job done around the goal line, and the hands to do plenty of damage in the passing game, as well. When the Ravens get Rice the ball early and often, good things tend to happen. With Baltimore likely to have its most balanced offense in years, Rice and company should finally be able to provide the counterpunch the defense needs.

The only downside for Baltimore is that they play in the rough AFC North. Vicious rivalries with Pittsburgh and Cincinnati make the schedule rough, and after blowing out the Steelers and winning the division last year, the Ravens will have targets on their backs this season. As a result, an equally talented Pittsburgh team could easily win the AFC North in 2012. That being said, Baltimore should still make a return to the postseason and make another deep run. The Ravens aren’t the favorite to win the Super Bowl, but they are definitely a threat.

2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Sleepers to Win NFL MVP Award

2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 MVP Award Sleepers: The starting point for identifying potential NFL MVP candidates is pretty clear. Look at the top teams in the league, and then look at the quarterbacks and running backs for those teams. In fact, the two positions have combined to win the last 25 MVP awards. QBs have actually dominated in recent years, winning the honor in each of the last five seasons, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few sleeper candidates that have a shot. Granted, some of them are still quarterbacks and running backs, but there are a few other players that could steal the award if things fall into place. With that in mind, here is a look at five sleeper candidates that could sneak up and win NFL MVP honors in 2012.

SBG Global Sportsbook

2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Sleepers to Win NFL MVP Award

1.      Matt Ryan, Quarterback, Atlanta Falcons (22/1)

Ryan has been rock solid since his rookie season, and last season, he set career highs in passing yards and touchdowns. His numbers should reach another level in 2012 as the Falcons transition to a pass-first event. Not to mention that he has a ton of weapons at his disposal. Receiver Roddy White is one of the best in the NFL, and Julio Jones looked like a natural deep threat as a rookie last year. He also has a future Hall of Famer at tight end in Tony Gonzalez, a solid slot receiver in Harry Douglas and a pass-catching running back in Jacquizz Rodgers. Atlanta should have one of the best offenses in the NFL, and as the engine that makes it all go, Ryan has a chance to put up the type of numbers that get the attention of MVP voters.

2.      Ray Rice, Running Back, Baltimore Ravens (30/1)

He is the centerpiece on offense for a Baltimore team that figures to be in the mix to win the AFC North and make another deep playoff run. Rice has established himself as one of the top all-around backs in the game, and he has had over 2,000 yards from scrimmage in two of the past three seasons. He has also topped 1,200 yards in each of the last three years and has averaged more than 70 catches in each of those seasons. More importantly, Rice is now the goal line back for the Ravens, and he had a career-high 15 touchdowns last season. If he finishes with 2,000-plus yards from scrimmage and 15-plus scores for a team that has one of the best records in the NFL, Rice could put himself in the thick of the MVP conversation.

3.      LeSean McCoy, Running Back, Philadelphia Eagles (30/1)

While quarterback Michael Vick is the oddsmakers’ favorite, LeSean McCoy was the team’s best offensive weapon last year. He finished fourth in the NFL in rushing, topping 1,300 yards. More importantly, his 17 rushing touchdowns were the most in the league, and his 20 total touchdowns led all players. McCoy has been a speedy, explosive back with moves to spare since entering the NFL, but last season, he showed he can carry the load between the tackles, as well. As the feature back in one of the better offenses in the game, McCoy’s stats should be gaudy. If the Eagles actually live up to expectations in the win/loss column this year, the team’s most reliable offensive weapon is bound to get noticed.

4.      DeMarcus Ware, Outside Linebacker, Dallas Cowboys (odds not listed)

Ware has emerged as the premier edge rusher at the linebacker position, and he has had at least 11.0 sacks in every season of his career with the exception of his rookie year. Last season, Ware had an eye-popping 19.5 sacks, coming within striking distance of the single-season record. In order for a defensive player to earn MVP honors, it is going to take a ton of big plays. It is no coincidence that Lawrence Taylor was the last defensive player to win the award, and Ware is a very similar player. Sacks, forced fumbles and plays in the backfield get noticed, and Ware does all those things as well as anyone in the NFL.

5.      Patrick Willis, Inside Linebacker San Francisco 49ers (odds not listed)

The 49ers figure to be one of the best teams in the NFL once again in 2012, and voters are bound to look for a potential MVP on any team with great record. Defense is the calling card of San Francisco, and Willis is the team’s best defender and the leader of the unit. He has been a tackling machine since entering the league, but as the talent around him as improved, Willis has been able to blitz more and drop back in coverage. Now that he is able to take advantage of his full skill set, Willis could add more sacks, interceptions and big plays to his always-impressive tackle total. Being the best player on one of the best teams has always been a good recipe for winning the MVP.

2012 Free NFL Picks: Dallas Cowboys @ New York Giants Odds and Predictions 9/5/12

2012 NFL Picks: Dallas Cowboys @ New York Giants Vegas Odds and Predictions – Free NFL Picks 9/5/2012: A pair of division rivals will open the 2012 NFL season when the New York Giants play host to the Dallas Cowboys. The two teams last met in last year’s regular season finale with the NFC East and a playoff spot up for grabs. New York won the game, won the division and went on to win the Super Bowl for the second time in five years. In many ways, these two franchises are complete opposites. The Giants don’t make many headlines until the postseason rolls around, while the Cowboys make nothing but headlines during the regular season and either miss the postseason completely or exit without winning a game. Despite the drastic differences in success, there is still no love lost between these teams. Both sides always seem to get up for the matchup, but fresh of a championship, the Giants are four-point favorites.

SBG Global Sportsbook

The game figures to be a high-scoring affair. Both teams bring excellent passing attacks and below average running games to the table, and both sides have questions about their secondary with the Giants dealing with injuries and the Cowboys breaking in rookie Morris Claiborne. In fact, New York and Dallas both ranked in the top seven in passing yards per game last year, and both ranked among the seven worst teams in terms of defending a pass. Given the numbers, it isn’t hard to understand why the two sides combined to score 116 points in their two meetings last year.

In terms of offensive firepower, there isn’t a shortage on either side. The Giants had arguably the most productive receiver tandem in the NFL last year in Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz. Both players have the speed to stretch the field, and while Nicks has the size that makes him a red zone nightmare, Cruz is one of the more dynamic players in the open field. Dallas counters with Dez Bryant and Miles Austin, and in terms of talent, the two can rival any duo in the league. Injuries and off-field issues on the part of Bryant have kept both from reaching their potential, but in a one-game scenario, either group can get it done.

While the receivers could be a push, New York does have an edge under center. Eli Manning has established himself as one of the clutch quarterbacks in the game, and it is more than just his performances in his two Super Bowl wins. Manning led the NFL in fourth quarter touchdowns last year, he converted just about every big third down that came his way, and he led a game-winning drive in the final minutes in Foxboro. Granted, Romo probably gets more criticism than he deserves, but the bottom line is that Manning gets the job done on the big stages while Romo hasn’t. In a rivalry game, Manning history of success under pressure is a huge plus for the Giants.

Of course, the X-factor in the game will likely be the Giants’ defensive front. It is no secret that the Dallas offensive line isn’t the strongest unit in the game, and that is bad news against New York. The Giants finished tied for third in the NFL with 48.0 sacks last year, and with the likes of Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Jason Pierre-Paul rotating along their defensive front, New York will likely finish at or near the top in sacks once again. Romo is going to be under pressure all night, and as I mentioned earlier, Romo and pressure haven’t exactly gotten along.

In the end, the same recipe that allowed New York to sweep the Cowboys and win the Super Bowl last year should allow them to win this year’s opener. While Manning should be able to take advantage of the young Dallas corners, the Giants’ pass rush should keep Romo scrambling most of the night. The Cowboys will still hit a big play or two themselves, but Manning will put things away in the fourth quarter if things do get close.

Prediction: New York Giants (-4) Cover the Spread

2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Linebacking Corps

2012 NFL Preseason Predictions – Top 5 Linebacking Corps in the NFL: Nearly every team in the NFL has at least one standout at the linebacker spot. Some teams have a dominant inside linebacker that stuffs the run and piles up tackles. Others have athletic outside linebackers that do everything from rush the passer to covering receivers. While having one star at the position is nice, but having a strong group of linebackers is a recipe for a versatile, dominant defense. With that in mind, here is a look at the top linebacking corps in the NFL for the 2012 season.

SBG Global Sportsbook

2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Linebacking Corps

1.      San Francisco 49ers

The unit is led by arguably the best inside linebacker in the game in Patrick Willis, and fellow inside backer Navorro Bowman also made the Pro Bowl last year. With two tackling machines anchoring the middle, speedy outside linebackers Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith are free to attack opposing quarterbacks off the edge. The duo combined for 21.0 sacks last year, including 14.0 from the then-rookie Smith. Add it all up, and it’s not hard to see why San Francisco had one of the best all-around defenses in the NFL last year. If anything, the group should be even better in 2012 as Smith and Brooks continue to learn the game.

2.      Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh group of linebackers offer a little bit of everything. Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons is a reliable tackling machine, while outside backer LaMarr Woodley is one of the better edge rushers at the position. Fellow outside linebacker James Harrison is the game changer of the group, and while he has been known to deliver a dirty hit or two, his hard hits and ability to make big plays make him a special player. Inside linebacker Larry Foote is the only weak link in the chain, and even he had a 99-tackle campaign in 2009. Foote is at the very least at a competent inside backer, and the other three players are outstanding.

3.      Washington Redskins

While Washington has had its issues winning games, the Redskins can be proud of the linebacking corps they have assembled. Ageless wonder London Fletcher is still one of the most productive players at the inside linebacker spot, and he is coming off a 166-tackle campaign. Outside linebacker Brian Orakpo is already one of the best edge rushers in the game, and fellow outside backer Ryan Kerrigan finished with 64 tackles, 7.5 sacks and four forced fumbles as a rookie last year. Inside linebacker Perry Riley is the most unimpressive player of the bunch, but even he made big strides in his second year in the NFL. After starting all 16 games last season, Riley should emerge as a solid fourth member to an otherwise star-studded group.

4.      Dallas Cowboys

The headliner of the group is DeMarcus Ware, who is probably the premier edge rusher at the outside linebacker position and is coming off a 19.5-sack season. Anthony Spencer mans the other side, and he could be a No. 1 pass rusher on most teams. Meanwhile, Sean Lee and Dan Connor form a nice blend of youth and experience at the inside linebacker spot. Lee will be in just his third year in 2012, and he logged 104 tackles one year ago. Connor, on the other hand, is coming off a 75-tackle season in his first year back from an injury. With Ware leading the way, the Cowboys’ linebackers are rock solid.

5.      Baltimore Ravens

Spare me the talk of Ray Lewis being over the hill. The guy still gets it done, and anything he has lost in terms of speed he more than makes up for in intensity and leadership. Not to mention that fellow linebacker Jameel McClain is an emerging star, as well. Rookie Courtney Upshaw will step in and man the outsider linebacker spot, and based on what he did for Alabama’s national title team last year, he should adjust to NFL life just fine. Paul Kruger will start the season at the other outside linebacker spot, while Terrell Suggs recovers from an injury. There is no sugar coating the fact that Kruger is nowhere near the players Suggs is, but he does have some pass rushing skills. More importantly, getting the defending Defensive Player of the Year back in the middle of the season will be a nice shot in the arm to an already strong group.
