2012 MLB Power Rankings: Top 10 Teams Heading into September

2012 MLB Power Rankings – Top 10 Teams Heading into September: The battle for the postseason is heating up, and the added wild card spot is keeping a ton of teams in the mix. The recent roster shuffling at the trade deadline and beyond has added fuel to the fire, as well. Even though dominant teams have emerged in a few divisions, nothing is set in stone just. However, that is going to change in the coming weeks as the playoff picture really takes shape and every game is crucial to a team’s chances. As the calendar turns to September, here is a look at the latest MLB Power Rankings.

MLB Betting

2012 MLB Power Rankings: Top 10 Teams Heading into September

1.      Cincinnati Reds (80-52): No Joey Votto, no problem. Cincinnati has been just fine without its best player in the lineup, building an 8 ½-game lead in the NL Central and becoming the first team to win 80 games. Closer Aroldis Chapman leads what might be the best bullpen in the game, and Johnny Cueto and Mat Latos are a great 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. The offense should get better when Votto returns, and the Reds appear to be gearing up for a deep playoff run.

2.      Washington Nationals (79-51): Although the impending shutdown of starter Stephen Strasburg is a bit worrisome, Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmerman and the rest of the staff should be able to hang on to the lead the Nationals have built in the NL East. While pitching has been this team’s calling card all year, the offense has improved of late now that Michael Morse, Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmerman are healthy. There is a reason that Washington had the third-best run differential in baseball, and it’s not all because of Strasburg.

3.      Texas Rangers (77-53): The starting rotation has been dealt some injuries, but the Rangers continue to remain out front in the AL West thanks to a strong bullpen and an incredible offense that has outscored opponents by an MLB-best 111 runs this season. Texas has the most wins in the American League, and with Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre, Nelson Cruz among the many weapons that dot the Rangers’ lineup, this team just doesn’t go through many prolonged slumps.

4.      San Francisco Giants (74-57): San Francisco is quietly taking control of the NL West despite the seemingly endless amount of moves that the Los Angeles Dodgers have done in recent weeks. Of course, the Giants added a solid bat themselves in Hunter Pence, and even with the loss of Melky Cabrera, this team continues to win. San Francisco is 8-2 in its last 10 games and has built a 4 ½-game lead in its division. Armed with a great starting rotation, the Giants might just stay atop the division for the rest of the year.

5.      Chicago White Sox (72-58): They run hot and cold, but a 7-3 stretch has the White Sox back atop the AL Central by three full games. Cy Young candidate Chris Sale and veteran Jake Peavy has provided stability at the top of the rotation, while the offense has been stout all season. Adam Dunn leads the majors with 38 home runs, and Chicago is tied for second as a team with 170 homers. The White Sox also rank seventh in the majors in runs scored, and they are looking more and more like the most complete team in their division.

6.      New York Yankees (75-55): The Yankees are still leading the AL East, but their double digits lead has evaporated as both Baltimore and Tampa Bay have moved to with three and 4 ½ games, respectively. Offense really isn’t the problem for a team that continues to lead the majors in home runs by a wide margin, but starting pitching has become an issue. Hiroki Kuroda and CC Sabathia are the Yankees’ only two reliable starters at this point, and Sabathia is dealing with some shoulder soreness. A lack of starting pitching is taking its toll.

7.      Oakland Athletics (73-57): Hats off to the Athletics’ front office. With a rotation full of names most people have never heard of and an offense full castoffs and unknowns, Oakland just keeps winning games. The Athletics have won six in a row and are 8-2 in their last 10 games. More importantly, they have positioned themselves in the thick of the wild card battle. Oakland certainly doesn’t have the biggest names powering its recent surge, but the results in the win/loss column are all that matter.

8.      Atlanta Braves (74-57): While the Braves just can’t seem to catch the Nationals in the NL East, they have built a little cushion as far as the wild card goes. A healthy Tim Hudson and the newly-acquired Paul Maholm have solidified the starting rotation, and closer Craig Kimbrel is as nasty as they come at the backend. Meanwhile, the offense continues to rank in the top 10 in the majors in runs scored as it has almost all year. Atlanta is solid top to bottom, but the Braves seem destined for a wild card berth unless Washington slows down.

9.      Baltimore Orioles (72-58): Every time you get ready to write off Baltimore, the Orioles find a way to go on a run and climb right back into contention. A 7-3 stretch has moved Baltimore to within three games of the Yankees for the top spot in the Al East, and the Orioles continue to be players for a wild card spot. A career-year at the plate from outfielder Adam Jones has helped the cause, and this scrappy bunch seems determined to stay in the mix the rest of the way.

10.  Los Angeles Angels (69-62): Rookie sensation Mike Trout and the rest of the Angels’ offense have done their part, but the starting rotation has let this team down. Big-money signees C.J. Wilson and Zack Greinke just aren’t getting it done on a consistent basis, and it is the main reason why Los Angeles is 8 ½ games out in the AL West. A recent 7-3 surge has helped matters, but unless the pitching gets on track, the Angels’ big payroll isn’t even going to lead to playoff appearance.

July 2012 MLB Power Rankings: Top 10 Teams

2012 MLB Power Rankings – Top 10 Teams in July: With the All-Star Game in the books and an end to the summer stretch of the season in sight, it is time to see how the top teams in Major League Baseball stack up. While certain teams have established themselves as sure-fire contenders, there are other teams that continue to run hot and cold. A few division winners appear to be emerging, but with additional wild-card spots available in both leagues, there are a ton of teams still in the hunt. Not to mention that the relatively quiet trade market could explode at any moment, reshaping the playoff picture entirely. In the meantime, here is a look at the latest MLB Power Rankings.

MLB Betting

July 2012 MLB Power Rankings: Top 10 Teams

1.      New York Yankees (57-37): It must be nice to go on a four-game losing skids and still have the best record in baseball. The Bronx Bombers continue to lead the majors in home runs, totaling 149 thus far. Rafael Soriano has helped New York forget about the loss of closer Mariano Rivera, and as long as this lineup continues to pound home runs at its current clip, the pitching only has to be serviceable for the Yankees to thrive.

2.      Cincinnati Reds (55-40): Cincinnati could have folded when MVP candidate Joey Votto went down with a knee injury. Instead, the Reds have ripped off four straight wins and are 8-2 in their last 10. Second baseman Brandon Phillips has shown why he was the biggest All-Star snub during the stretch, and starter Homer Bailey has actually looked like the ace he was drafted to be. Not to mention that Aroldis Chapman has been blowing away everyone in the ninth inning. Cincinnati is a major player in the National League.

3.      Pittsburgh Pirates (54-40): Armed with a group of castoff pitchers and a superstar center fielder, the Pirates just won’t go away. Five straight wins have Pittsburgh just a half game out of first in the NL Central and looking like a playoff team. The Pirates actually have the second-fewest homers in the majors this year, but with MVP frontrunner Andrew McCutchen shouldering the load on offense and the pitching staff ranking sixth in team ERA, this team keeps finding ways to win games.

4.      Texas Rangers (56-37): It is the same old story for Texas. The Rangers have a loaded lineup, and they continue to lead the majors in team batting average. They also rank second in runs scored. The pitching has been streaky at times, but the offense covers up for the flaws more often than not. Texas just has too much power in its lineup to struggle for an extended period of time, and the Rangers have stretched out their lead in the AL West once again.

5.      Washington Nationals (55-39): Pitching has been the name of the game for Washington all season, and the Nationals still lead the majors in ERA and WHIP. However, starter Gio Gonzalez appears to be wearing down, and Stephen Strasburg is fast approaching his supposed innings limit. On the plus side, the lineup is getting healthy. With Jayson Werth set to join the red hot Michael Morse and Ryan Zimmerman shortly, Washington should still be able to contend even if the pitching slips a bit.

6.      Detroit Tigers (52-44): Teams in the AL Central have taken turns running hot and cold, and right now, it is the Tigers’ turn to be on top. Detroit has reeled off five straight wins and has eight wins in its last 10 games to take the lead in the division. The staff of power pitchers has been up and down, but Justin Verlander and company have amassed the second-most strikeouts this year. Meanwhile, Miguel Cabrera has made sure the Tigers’ offense has produced. Detroit currently ranks in the top 10 in the majors in runs scored, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The Tigers have the star power to win this division.

7.      San Francisco Giants (53-42): The offense still isn’t pretty, but the Giants starting rotation can go toe to toe with anyone. San Francisco has gone 7-3 in its last 10 games, and back-to-back strong starts from Tim Lincecum are definitely encouraging. Even with Lincecum struggling most of the year, San Francisco still owns the fifth-best team ERA in baseball. If the Giants can get the two-time Cy Young winner back on track for the stretch run, they should be able to stretch out their lead in the NL West.

8.      Los Angeles Dodgers (52-44): Center fielder Matt Kemp returns, and the Dodgers suddenly win four straight games. Shocking what one incredibly great player can do for a lineup. The fact that the Dodgers are even still in contention after how bad their offense was when Kemp was out is a testament to the pitching staff. Los Angeles has the second-best team ERA in baseball this year, and Kemp’s return should help an offense that ranks dead last in homers and has scored the fifth-fewest runs.

9.      Atlanta Braves (52-43): Thanks to an offense that has ranked in the top 10 in runs scored all year and a pitching staff that has steadily improved, the Braves continue to stay within striking distance in the NL East. At this point, a wild-card spot seems very likely. Atlanta has been pretty darn solid all year, and having the right mix of young talent and veteran experience has a lot to do with that. The health of Chipper Jones could be the X-factor long term.

10.  Oakland Athletics (50-44): Once again, Oakland has assembled a group of unknown players that keep winning games. Who would have thought a rotation featuring Jarrod Parker, Tommy Milone, Bartolo Colon and Brandon McCarthy would be part of a staff that owns the fourth-best ERA in baseball? On offense, Cuban slugger Yoenis Cespedes appears to be the real deal, and Josh Reddick is looking like a steal. The Athletics have won five straight games and are 8-2 in their last 10. This roster certainly doesn’t look like a playoff team, but it is tough to argue with the results on the field.

2012 MLB Power Rankings: Top 10 Teams in June

2012 MLB Power Rankings – Top 10 Teams in June: The All-Star Game is fast approaching, and for most teams, it can’t come soon enough. This is the time of the year when the temperature starts to rise, and position players and pitchers start to wear down. Nagging injuries start to mount, and the depth of all the teams is tested. A division can’t be won in June and July, but a summer slump can definitely cost a team a shot at the postseason. In this installment of Power Rankings, the teams that have navigated the rough patch of the year the best have climbed to the top.

MLB Betting

2012 MLB Power Rankings: Top 10 Teams in June

1. Los Angeles Dodgers (39-23): Even without Matt Kemp, who is probably the best all-around player in baseball, the Dodgers keep winning. In fact, they have the best record in the majors and are 7-3 in their last 10 games. Pitching has been the strength of the team all season, and having the second-best team ERA in the game has helped offset the fact that the Dodgers have hit the third-fewest home runs of any team.

2. Texas Rangers (35-26): The pitching has slipped a bit in recent weeks, but the powerful Texas lineup continues to assault opposing pitchers. The Rangers currently rank first as a team in batting average, runs scored, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. They also rank third in homers. Led by AL MVP frontrunner Josh Hamilton, the Texas offense will continue to power this team to wins.

3. New York Yankees (35-25): A four-game winning streak and an 8-2 stretch overall has vaulted the Yankees into a tie for first in the AL East. The “Bronx Bombers” are living up to their nickname, and New York has mashed a MLB-leading 93 homers this season. Not to mention that the addition of veteran Andy Pettitte to the staff has solidified the starting rotation.

4. Washington Nationals (36-23): Washington is literally pitching its way toward a division title. The Nationals’ staff has been incredible, and their 2.98 team ERA and 1.14 WHIP are the best in the majors. Starters Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmerman, Stephen Strasburg and Edwin Jackson all have an ERA of 3.02 or lower. Meanwhile, the addition of Bryce Harper and the steady play of Adam Laroche have given the offense a boost. If third baseman Ryan Zimmerman can ever get fully healthy, this team is going to be a potential World Series contender.

5. Los Angeles Angels (33-29): Apparently, Albert Pujols’ first homer lifted the monkey off the back of the entire team. The Angels have been playing great lately and have moved within 2 ½ games of Texas in the AL West thanks to a 7-3 stretch. Rookie Mike Trout has been a phenomenal addition at the top of a lineup that has been heating up alongside Pujols. Meanwhile, the pitching staff has quietly posted the second-best ERA in the American League. The Angels could still live up the hype, even with the slow start.

6. Tampa Bay Rays (35-25): Tampa Bay currently sits tied atop the AL East standings, and the pitching continues to carry an offense that desperately needs Evan Longoria to return. The Rays have the best team ERA (3.40) in the AL (3.40), but stringing together wins has been tough lately, in large part because of the second-lowest batting average in the league. Tampa Bay has relied heavily on aggressive base running to manufacture runs, but this team could be in trouble in the pitching falters at all.

7. Pittsburgh Pirates (32-27): The Pirates are somewhat of a statistical anomaly. They have scored the fewest runs (191) in the majors this year and have the second-lowest batting average (.224) but are tied for first in the NL Central. An 8-2 stretch has helped them climb up the standings, but the real backbone of this team has been pitching. James McDonald has blossomed as an ace, castoffs A.J. Burnett and Erik Bedard have been rock solid, and Pittsburgh has the third-best team ERA. Long term, the offense will have to improve, but for now, the Pirates are making some noise.

8. Atlanta Braves (34-27): With all the young players on offense, Atlanta is going to go through some ups and downs, but with seven wins in their last 10 games, the Braves are rolling right now. Offense hasn’t really been the issue anyway, as Atlanta has ranked in the top 10 in runs scored all year. Pitching depth has been the real issue, and the Braves need starters other than Brandon Beachy and Tommy Hanson to step up. Still, Atlanta has been in the mix all year in the loaded NL East.

9. Chicago White Sox (33-27): Paul Konerko is criminally underrated as the centerpiece of a Chicago offense that ranks sixth in the majors in both runs scored and homers, and Adam Dunn has bounced back by already smacking 20 home runs. Starter Jake Peavy has also returned to form, and youngster Chirs Sale has flourished in his first year in the rotation. Add it all up, and the White Sox are leading the AL Central and are set up for a playoff push.

10. San Francisco Giants (34-27): Slugger Pablo Sandoval has been hurt, two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum has been horrible, but the Giants have still managed the third-most wins in the National League thus far. It has been a group effort, with Matt Cain and the other starters stepping up and speedy outfielders Melky Cabrera and Angel Pagan having career years at the plate. The Giants have hit the second-fewest homers in the majors, but they rank seventh in total hits and first in triples. It has been a little unconventional, but it is working for San Francisco.

2012 MLB Power Rankings: Updated Top 10 Teams – Orioles and Rangers Top the List

2012 MLB Power Rankings: Updated Top 10 Teams – Orioles and Rangers Top the List: With the summer months fast approaching, the sweltering hot days that wear down teams and separate the contenders from the pretenders are right around the corner. In the meantime, teams are doing their best to put themselves in a good position heading into this crucial stretch of the year. Roughly 40 games into the 2012 season, there are certainly some surprises at the top and the bottom of the division races. Preseason favorites like Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies are sitting in the cellar of the AL and NL East, and the Los Angeles Angels are only 1.5 games out of last in the AL West. Needless to say, the struggles of these teams and other have opened the door for a few surprises in the latest addition of MLB Power Rankings.

MLB Betting

2012 MLB Power Rankings Thru May 19th

1.      Baltimore Orioles (26-14): That’s right. Baltimore is in the top spot, and we are midway through the month of May. The Orioles are leading the AL East, and they are tied for the most wins in the majors this season. Young hitters like Adam Jones and Matt Wieters have blossomed, and Balitmore currently has an MLB-leading 62 home runs as a team. The pitching has also been much better than expected, and the Orioles have the fourth-best ERA in baseball. The team’s surprising success is looking more sustainable by the game, and this would be the ultimate underdog story.

2.      Texas Rangers (25-15): The Rangers have scored more runs than any team in baseball this season, they are hitting .291 as a team, and they have the third-best team ERA. They also have this guy named Josh Hamilton, who is well on his way to winning a second AL MVP Award. The Texas lineup is absolutely loaded with power and speed, and offseason addition Yu Darvish has provided an instant boost to the starting rotation. The two-time defending AL pennant winners have so much firepower that it borders on being unfair.

3.      Los Angeles Dodgers (26-13): While Matt Kemp may get a lot of the headlines, it is really the Dodgers’ pitching staff that has carried the team this season. Defending NL Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw leads a rock solid starting rotation, and Los Angeles currently ranks second in the majors with a 3.07 team ERA. The fact that the Dodgers have been able to maintain their solid pace despite Kemp missing time with injuries only solidifies this team’s chance for the long haul.

4.      Tampa Bay Rays (24-16): Injuries to slugger Evan Longoria and closer Kyle Farnsworth haven’t stopped the Rays from being one of the best teams in baseball. James Shields and David Price lead a rotation that ranks second in the majors in strikeouts, and even though Tampa Bay doesn’t have the most loaded lineup, the offense finds ways to get it done. Thanks to the third-most steals in baseball and timely hitting, the Rays rank in the top 10 in terms of runs scored. Speed kills, and this team has it in their lineup and on the mound.

5.      Atlanta Braves (25-15): With a constantly-improving young lineup featuring the likes of Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman and Brian McCann and a lights out bullpen, the Braves are threatening to return to the glory days when the dominated the NL East. For the first time in a long time, Atlanta’s offense is scaring opponents, and the Braves currently rank third in team batting average and are tied for the second-most runs scored. The starting pitching has struggled at times, but having Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel at the backend, the Braves can shorten games. Atlanta has a ton of young talent, and this team is just scratching the surface of what it can do.

6.      Washington Nationals (23-16): Washington ranks third-last with just 141 runs scored this season, but that hasn’t stopped the Nationals from having one of the better records in the majors this season. The secret to their success has been incredible pitching, and Washington currently leads baseball with a 2.90 team ERA, 1.11 team WHIP and 341 strikeouts. Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmerman lead the stellar rotation, and if the lineup can provide any kind of run support, the Nationals will be tough to handle.

7.      Cleveland Indians (22-17): The surprise leaders of the AL Central don’t really pop on the stat sheet except for the win column, which is all that counts in the long run. Cleveland has a young lineup that strikes out too much and a young rotation that walks too many batters, but the Indians do rank in the top 10 in runs scored this year. Consistency is going to remain an issue for such a young, inexperienced team, but the good has outweighed the bad so far. Not to mention the fact that no other team in the division seems eager to step up and take control anyway.

8.      St. Louis Cardinals (22-17): Injuries have plagued St. Louis all season, as Jon Jay, Lance Berkman, Carlos Beltran, Allen Craig and Chris Carpenter have all missed time 6ro dealt with nagging issues. Still, the defending World Series champs are leading the NL Central and have had one of the most reliable offenses in baseball. The Cardinals rank second in runs scored and team batting average and have hit the fifth-most home runs this season. The pitching hasn’t been great, but it hasn’t been bad either. With a rotation that is missing its ace and a ton of other injuries, St. Louis should only get better as it gets healthy.

9.      New York Yankees (21-18): The Yankees’ pitching staff is a wreck, but what else is new? Yes, the loss of closer Mariano Rivera is a devastating blow to the bullpen, but at the end of the day, New York is all about belting homers and scoring runs. The Yankees rank third in the majors in home runs, and the lineup is as loaded as ever. Not to mention that since returning, Andy Pettite has looked like a capable No. 2 starter to CC Sabathia. The Yankees don’t have much pitching, but the last few years have shown that a strong offense can mask the problem to a degree.

10.  Miami Marlins (21-18): After a rough start, the Marlins have been one of the hotter teams in baseball the past month. Miami has been the NL version of Tampa Bay in many ways, relying on pitching and speed to win games. With Jose Reyes and Emilio Bonifacio at the top of the lineup, the Marlins are leading the majors in steal. Meanwhile, the pitching staff ranks sixth in team ERA. Closer Heath Bell has been a mess so far, but if Miami can solidify the bullpen, the marlins have the speed and starting rotation to make a little noise despite a below average offense.

Posted in MLBComments Off on 2012 MLB Power Rankings: Updated Top 10 Teams – Orioles and Rangers Top the List

2012 MLB Power Rankings: Top 10 Teams thru April 20

2012 MLB Power Rankings: Top 10 Teams Thru April 20: The 2012 MLB season is only a few weeks old, but it is never too early to start seeing how teams stack up. After all, who would have thought that Albert Pujols would be homerless and the Angles would be in last place in the AL West? More importantly, who would have thought Bartolo Colon would be 3-0 and set a MLB record by throwing 38 consecutive strikes? Early season surprises can often have long-term ramifications, and the first installment of Power Rankings features both some familiar faces and unexpected teams at the top.

1.      Texas Rangers (11-2): The two-time defending AL champs are off to a blazing start. Texas has one of the best lineups in baseball, and Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli, Michael Young and the rest of the gang have come out of the gate swinging. The Rangers have the best batting average in baseball and are second the majors in home runs and in runs scored. There pitching staff is currently second in ERA, as well. With a deep rotation and a loaded lineup, Texas is looking like the best time in the American League.

2.      Los Angeles Dodgers (11-3): How good is Matt Kemp? He single handedly makes the Los Angeles lineup dangerous, and with Andre Ethier healthy and a full season of Dee Gordon at the top of the lineup, Kemp should have even more opportunities to drive in runs. The rotation features defending Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw, and with arguably the best pitcher and player in the NL on their roster, the Dodgers fast start is no fluke.

3.      Detroit Tigers (9-4): As expected, Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera have been providing most of the offense for the Tigers, and Justin Verlander has been the workhorse at the top of the rotation. Detroit really doesn’t have a lot of depth, but armed with three of the biggest stars in the AL, it is no surprise that the Tigers are sitting atop a weak Central Division. Barring an injury to one of its key players, Detroit should be a factor all season long.

MLB Betting

4.      St. Louis Cardinals (10-4): Life without Albert Pujols has been surprisingly easy for St. Louis. Despite a banged up rotation, the Cardinals look every bit the team that won the World Series last year. Carlos Beltran is hitting the ball like he did in his prime, Rafael Furcal looks rejuvenated, and David Freese’s bat has never cooled off from the postseason. The front office always seems to make the right moves, and this team should only get better as its pitching gets healthy.

5.      Washington Nationals (11-4): Bryce Harper may be the future, but the Nationals are contenders right now. With a healthy Stephen Strasburg leading a group of starters that also features Gio Gonzalez, Edwin Jackson and Jordan Zimmerman, Washington has one of the best rotations in the National League. A lack of consistent offense is a concern, but as long as the pitching holds up, the Nationals won’t have to score a ton of runs to win games.

6.      Atlanta Braves (9-5): Atlanta’s pitching was a mess the opening week, but a surprisingly potent offense has helped masked the issue. The Braves are leading the majors in runs scored this season, and after opening the season with four straight losses, a 9-1 stretch has powered Atlanta back into contention. The pitching is already starting to come around, and with a lineup that features young talents like Jason Heyward, Brian McCann and Freddie Freeman, along with the speedy Michael Bourn and the powerful Dan Uggla, it is no surprise to see the Braves turning into an offensive juggernaut.

7.      New York Yankees (8-6): It’s funny how all the offseason changes have done little to change to Yankees. The pitching is still inconsistent, and the lineup is still loaded. New York is leading the majors in home runs, and its pitching staff has an ERA above 4.00. The front office can make all the trades it wants, but in that ballpark, the Yankees are going to have to outslug opponents all season long. That being said, they have the bats to do just that.

8.      Baltimore Orioles (8-5): While we all know the Orioles will eventually fade into last place in the AL East, they deserve a little credit for another fast start. Baltimore’s pitching is definitely improved, especially the starting rotation, and Adam Jones’ emergence as a true star has helped the lineup. The Orioles don’t have the financial means or firepower to compete with New York, Boston and Tampa Bay over the long haul, but they do have enough talent to play spoiler down the stretch to somebody’s playoff hopes.

9.      San Francisco Giants (7-6): Tim Lincecum’s horrendous start to the year is cause for concern, but since Matt Cain is pitching like an ace and Barry Zito apparently thinks it is 2002, the rotation isn’t doomed. More importantly, a healthy Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey have provided a much-needed boost to a Giants’ offense that struggled to score last season. The Giants have won three straight games after a rocky start, and assuming Lincecum comes around before Zito falls off, San Francisco should be fine long term.

10.  Cincinnati Reds (6-8): Perhaps no team outside of Boston has been as big of a disappointment as Cincinnati to start the year. The Reds have been a mess on offense, and Mat Latos has been a huge bust as the team’s big offseason acquisition. Still, seven of the eight losses have come to division leaders St. Louis and Washington, and a lineup that features Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce is too good not to start scoring some runs. The bigger question for the Reds is what they are going to do with Aroldis Chapman. The flame thrower is being wasted as a middle reliever.
