2012 French Open Championship Match Oddsand Picks: Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic

2012 French Open Championship Match Oddsand Picks: Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic: History is on the line in the French Open title match Sunday when top-ranked Novak Djokovic faces second-ranked Rafael Nadal. With a win, Djokovic can become the first player in 43 years to win all four major tournaments in succession, completing a career Grand Slam in the process. Meanwhile, Nadal is trying to break a tie with Bjorn Borg and win the French Open for a record-setting seventh time. The two players are currently the juggernauts of the tennis world, and another epic battle could be on tap.

2012 French Open Championship Odds and Free Picks

Based on the numbers, something has to give Sunday. Djokovic has won 27 straight matches at major tournaments. His winning streak includes victories over Nadal in the championship match at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open. Djokovic has owned his biggest rival on the biggest stages recently, but on the clay surface of Roland Garros, Nadal has owned everyone. He is an incredible 51-1 in French Open matches in his career. Nadal has also defeated Djokovic in two clay court tournaments earlier this year, and I’m sure there is nothing he would love more than to win an 11th major championship and prevent his rival from making history in the process.

Entering the championship match, there is no question that Nadal will be the more rested of the two. He has steamrolled through the field and has yet to lose a single set. Djokovic, on the other hand, needed two come-from-behind, five-set thrillers just to reach the semifinals. Even though he breezed by third-ranked Roger Federer in straight sets to reach the title match, there are a lot more miles on Djokovic’s legs than on Nadal’s. Granted, the chance to win four straight Grand Slam titles is likely to combat any fatigue, but Djokovic could have trouble keeping pace if Sunday’s match becomes a grueling, five-set affair similar to his Australian Open title match with Nadal earlier this year.

In addition to the chance to set a record for the most French Open wins, Sunday’s title match gives Nadal an opportunity to regain some of the confidence he seems to have lost against Djokovic. When facing Djokovic, Nadal has begun to show the same defeated body language and frustration that Federer has shown in his repeated failures against Nadal. There is no better place for Nadal to regain his confidence and swagger against “The Joker” than on the clay courts of Roland Garros. As dominant as he has been at the French Open, it might as well be Nadal’s home court.

The biggest question facing Djokovic is whether or not he can break Nadal’s serve. It has happened once thus far, as he has won 71 of his 72 service games. If Djokovic is going to out any kind of pressure on Nadal and make a realistic push for the upset, he has to be able to capitalize on any break point opportunities that come his way. His aggressive playing style should help his cause, but it will also leave him vulnerable to Nadal’s equally aggressive tactics. Djokovic will have to pick his spots perfectly to derail Nadal.

At the end of the day, this is Nadal’s match to lose. As evidenced by his trip to the title match, Djokovic is improving on clay. However, he is by no means one the master of the surface that Nadal is. The six-time French Open champ may have trouble getting by Djokovic without losing a set, unless he is truly intimidated by his recent losses in major finals, Nadal should get some revenge Sunday. Djokovic’s natural talent and hustle will prevent him from being embarrassed, but Nadal is just the better clay court player in this matchup.

Prediction: Rafael Nadal Wins in 4 Sets

2012 French Open Semifinals Odds and Picks: Federer vs Djokovic and Ferrer vs Nadal

2012 French Open Semifinals Odds and Free Picks: Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer vs Rafael Nadal: Another Grand Slam semifinal is upon us, and with the exception of sixth-seeded David Ferrer, it is the usual suspects vying for the title. The top three seeds are all still standing at the French Open, although some needed to work a little hard than others. Ferrer is the wild card in what promises to be another battle between the world’s best tennis players with a major championship up for grabs.

2012 French Open Semifinals Odds and Free Picks

No. 1 Novak Djokovic vs. No. 3 Roger Federer

This is a rematch of a French Open semifinal meeting last season. In that battle, Federer derailed the hottest player in the game, snapping Djokovic’s 43-match winning streak. “The Joker” hasn’t lost a Grand Slam match since, and he enters Thursday’s meeting with Federer with his sights set on becoming the fourth player in history to win all four major championships in succession. Federer, on the other hand, is looking to add a second French Open title to his record-setting 16 career major titles. With both players coming off come-from-behind, thrilling five-set victories in the quarterfinals, a grueling showdown could be on tap.

Clay isn’t the best surface for either player, but both have improved over the years. Federer holds a slight edge in head-to-head meetings on the surface and in majors in general. He owns a 14-11 career record against Djokovic, including a 5-4 record in Grand Slams and 3-2 record on clay. Of course, Djokovic has been the better overall player of late, winning three straight majors and four of the last five. Still, the fact that Federer was the only man to defeat him at a major during his current hot streak has to loom large in the mind of Djokovic.

In general, Federer just seems to have a style of play that bothers Djokovic, especially on clay. Federer might not have the baseline speed that he did when he dominated the sport, but he is a much smarter and savvier player these days. Last year, he was able to take advantage of the subtle nuances of the clay surface to use Djokovic’s aggressiveness against him. Federer dispatched “The Joker” in four sets at Roland Garros last year, and the No. 1 player in the world has closed the gap since then, Federer will still get the better of his rival on the clay surface in what should be another marathon for both men.

Prediction: Roger Federer Wins in 5 Sets

No. 2 Rafael Nadal vs. No. 6 David Ferrer

With a victory over fourth-seeded Andy Murray in the quarterfinals, Ferrer is the lone surprise in the French Open semifinals. His prize for pulling off the upset is a match with the best player in the history of the tournament. To his credit, Ferrer does own a recent win in a major against Nadal, knocking him off in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open last season. However, Nadal is a perfect 4-0 in their meetings since, with all four victories coming on clay and three of those coming in tournament finals.

Looking at Nadal’s numbers in the French Open and on clay in general, Ferrer definitely has his work cut out for him. The six-time tournament champ is 50-1 in his matches at Roland Garros, and he has won his last 45 sets on clay surfaces. Not only that, he has yet to lose a set in this year’s event and has lost just five total sets in the six years he has won the French Open. Nadal has not only won a record-tying six titles in a seven-year span, but he has done so in dominating fashion.

Ferrer has definitely earned his way into the semifinals, and any player that makes it this far has a chance. However, his chances of beating Nadal are so slim they aren’t even worth trying to quantify. Barring an injury or some other unforeseen event that keeps Nadal from taking the court, Ferrer is going to become the next victim to get steamrolled as Nadal roars back the French Open finals in pursuit of history.

2012 French Open Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – French Open Favorites and Sleepers

2012 French Open Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – French Open Favorites and Sleepers: The second major of the season has arrived, as the top players in the world head to Roland Garros for the 2012 French Open. The tournament’s signature clay surface makes the French Open the trickiest of the four Grand Slam events. The clay changes the way the balls bounce, the speed of the game, and the way players must approach each match. Attacking and being aggressive are a must because of the clay’s ability to bring any shot to an immediate halt. Some of the best players of all-time have struggled with the unique surface, and some never master the clay.

Last season, Rafael Nadal had no issues handling the clay as he won the French Open for the second year in a row and the sixth time in his career. He had only one tough match throughout the entire tournament, and he easily dispatched Roger Federer in the finals. Nadal’s sixth French Open title tied him for the most in the Open Era and second most all-time, earning him the nickname the King of Clay.

The Favorites – 2012 ATP French Open Odds, Free Picks and Predictions

Defending French Open winner Rafael Nadal has absolutely dominated on the clay surface of Roland Garros. He has won the tournament six of the last seven years, and he is going for a three-peat this season. Nadal can pass Bjorn Borg for the most French Open titles in the Open Era by winning this year’s event, and considering how well he plays on clay, it’s tough to bet against him getting the record. Plain and simple, Nadal is the king of clay.

Clay isn’t his best surface by any means, but Novak Djokovic is the No. 1 player in the world for a reason. He hasn’t lost a major tournament since his loss in the semifinals of the French Open last year, and if wins at Roland Garros, he will complete a “Djokovic Slam” by winning all four Grand Slam events in a row but not in the same calendar year. Expect the top player in the sport to be very motivated to capture the one major missing from his resume.

No, he isn’t the dominant force he was a few year ago, but Roger Federer isn’t washed up either. In fact, he has been the most consistent player around since the Australian Open a few months ago and has a chance to regain the No. 1 ranking if he keeps up his current pace. Federer has looked strong in the clay tournaments leading up to the French Open, and he knows what a second win at Roland Garros would mean to his legacy. He already has more major titles than any player in history, and a second French Open win would give multiple wins in every Grand Slam event. After losing in the finals last season, Federer is probably the biggest threat to Rafael Nadal’s winning streak.

The Dark Horses – 2012 ATP French Open Odds, Free Picks and Predictions

There is definitely a gap between Andy Murray and the top three players in the world, but he is without question the fourth-best player. More importantly, he has made the semifinals of the last five Grand Slam events, including last year’s French Open. Murray may be a little banged up, but he always seems to be his sharpest on the biggest stages. Clay isn’t his favorite surface, but a guy that is a near lock to be one of the last four players standing has a puncher’s chance at the very least.

The Sleepers – 2012 ATP French Open Odds, Free Picks and Predictions

Although he didn’t look great at the clay tournaments at Rome and Madrid in recent weeks, John Isner is still a dangerous player at Roland Garros. He is an aggressive player that isn’t afraid to attack the net, and his powerful serve keeps opponents off balance. Isner’s style is built for clay court tennis, and he was the only player to take defending French Open champion Rafael Nadal to five sets in last year’s tournament. He has had issues with consistency throughout his career, but don’t be surprised if Isner finds a way to get focused with a major title on the line.

While he is certainly past his prime and less than 100 percent heading into the French Open, Juan Carlos Ferrero has the clay court game and experience to make a surprise run. He is a former No. 1 ranked player, and more importantly, he won at Roland Garros in 2003. Ferrero doesn’t have the speed to compete with the big boys on the harder surfaces, but his savvy play and understanding of the clay surface can help him even the playing field in this tournament. Ferrero is an underdog for sure, but the former French Open champ could be a tough out.
