While there is always pressure with any major, there is something about the last major of the year that adds to the drama. This year’s tournament will be held at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. The tournament will use the club’s East Course, and the setup should provide a tough test fitting for a major. After all, nearly every hole features a narrow fairway and small green, and there are even a few holes where a bad shot can unravel a golfer’s entire round. In short, Oak Hill is going to test the patience, precision and consistency of all the players, and it is going to take the right combination of conservative play and calculated risk taking to take home the Wanamaker Trophy awarded to the winner. With that in mind, here is a closer look at the top contenders for the 2013 PGA Championship.
The Favorites
After demolishing the competition in the Bridgestone Invitational for his fifth win of the year, Tiger Woods appears to be dialed in heading to the final major of the year. He has won the PGA Championship four times in his career, and although his most recent win in the event came in 2007, the guy hasn’t exactly been playing bad golf in the majors. In his 17 starts in major tournaments since his win in the 2008 U.S. Open, Woods has finished sixth or better nine times, including twice in 2013. He is also having his best overall season since his last major title, and if he continues to put like he has most of this year, his major drought could certainly end.
He has come into his own in recent years, and Adam Scott cemented his status as one of golf’s best earlier this year when he won the Masters. That being said, the win was just the exclamation point on a hot stretch that has seen him finish in the top 15 in seven of the last eight major tournaments. At the PGA Championship specifically, Scott has finished seventh and 11th the bets two years, and his combination of length and accuracy off the tee should allow him to handle the narrow fairways at Oak Hill.
While he may be the ultimate hit-or-miss player, it is tough to bet against Phil Mickelson when he is on a roll. After an incredible final round to capture The Open Championship last month and three top-two finishes in his last five tournaments, he is definitely on a roll. Mickelson actually hasn’t performed all that well in the PGA Championship since winning in 2005, but he is the type of golfer that can win any tournament on any course if he is dialed in. Mickelson has finished second and first in the last two major tournaments, and he should be a major factor in deciding the outcome at Oak Hill, as well.
The Dark Horse
Although he has never won a major title, Hunter Mahan has been in the hunt in each of the past two major tournaments. He ultimately settled for fourth at the U.S. Open and ninth at The Open Championship, but Mahan did play in the final pairing in both events. He is clearly getting comfortable playing his best on big stages, and if any player is owed a lucky bounce or two, it’s Mahan. He was leading in Ontario two weeks ago heading into the weekend when he withdrew from the tournament because his wife went into labor. A little good karma certainly won’t hurt his chances of landing the Wanamaker Trophy.
The Sleepers
While Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have dominated the headlines with their victories in recent weeks, you won’t find a golfer that has been more consistent lately the Henrik Stenson. He has finished third or better in his last three tournaments, including a runner-up effort in The Open Championship. Perhaps more importantly, the big events have been bringing out the best in Stenson. He has finished in the top 25 in all three majors in 2013 to go along with a fifth-place effort in The Players Championship. Stenson has also finished sixth or better in two of his last three starts in the PGA Championship, but more than anything, his recent hot streak is what makes him an intriguing sleeper heading into Thursday.
He only has two PGA Tour wins and has never won a major, but Jason Dufner’s game is tailor made to course like Oak Hill East. He excels at hitting fairways and hitting greens, and with little margin for error off the tee at Oak Hill, his accuracy will come in handy. Meanwhile, Dufner is no stranger to success in this particular major, having cracked the top five in both 2010 and 2011. He is also coming off a fourth-place finish in the Bridgestone Invitational last week. All the pieces are in place for Dufner to have an excellent tournament.
