Sunday Night NFL Picks: New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles Odds and Predictions – Free NFL Picks 9/30/2012

2012 NFL Picks: New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles Vegas Odds and Predictions – Free NFL Picks 9/30/2012: A pair of NFC East rivals will meet Sunday night when the New York Giants (2-1) go on the road to face the Philadelphia Eagles (2-1) with the top spot in the division on the line. The Giants enter the matchup fresh off a blowout win against Carolina last Thursday, while the turnover-prone Eagles were embarrassed by Arizona last Sunday. However, both sides have plenty of offensive firepower, and plenty of bad blood exists between the two teams. Not to mention the fact that Philadelphia has won seven of its last eight meetings with New York. It is one of those rivalries that always seem to be competitive, and fittingly, there is an even line for Sunday’s meeting.

There will be several interesting battles going on within the game, and the most important might be between Eli Manning and the Philadelphia secondary. New York has the third-best passing attack in the NFL this season, and Manning is leading the league in passing yards. However, the Eagles area allowing the third-fewest passing yards per game and have allowed only a handful of big completions. The Giants don’t have a great rushing attack, and if the passing game struggles, they usually struggle. Manning has plenty of weapons to work with, including the dynamic receiving combo of Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks. However, Philadelphia has the secondary and the pass rush to at least limit the damage Manning can do through the air.

The bigger issue facing the Eagles is the rash of turnovers plaguing its own offense. Philadelphia has turned the ball over 12 times in just three games – by far the most in the league. Quarterback Michael Vick has been responsible for most of them, but the constant pressure he is under in the pocket has played a role. The Eagles have been missing their starting left tackle all year, exposing an already mediocre offensive line. While the Giants’ defensive line has yet to have a breakout performance in 2012, the unit is still loaded with pass rushers. If the Eagles can keep Vick upright, they should be able to take advantage of a banged up New York secondary. Unfortunately, pass protection has been an issue for Philadelphia all year, and it will likely remain a problem against the Giants on Sunday.

In many ways, the Eagles are one big contradiction on the stat sheet. Philadelphia’s offense ranks in the top eight in terms of passing yards and rushing yards, but the Eagles are averaging less than 16 points per game. Not to mention the fact that the team is 2-1 despite being outscored 66-47 so far in 2012. Without a doubt, turnovers have been the biggest factor limiting this team’s potential. You can pile up all the yards you want, but if you give opponents a short field to work with on a regular basis and don’t finish off drives of your own, you are going to struggle. There have been no signs through the first three weeks that Philadelphia is any closer to protecting Vick or that Vick is any closer to making better decisions with the ball.

Sadly, Philadelphia’s own mistakes will likely be its downfall. The Eagles personnel actually match up well with New York’s strengths, but it is going to take a complete effort to knock off the defending Super Bowl champs. Right now, Philadelphia isn’t firing on all cylinders, and that is bad news against the Giants. Manning and company are no strangers to winning big games on the road, and they enter Sunday’s game with some extra rest after clobbering the Panthers last Thursday. While Vick struggles to find himself under center, Manning has emerged as one of the most clutch performers in the NFL. In a heated rivalry, Vick will make a mistake and Manning will make a big play.
