2015 NFC South Division Predictions and Odds to Win

1. New Orleans Saints(+225 odds to win NFC South at Bovada) – Head coach Sean Payton made some big changes this offseason as he tries to rebuild a defense that fell to 31st in the NFL last season while trying to keep the offense near the top of the NFL as it was 1st last season when the Saints ended up 7-9. The Saints traded their all pro tight end Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for former pro bowl center Max Unger in a big move that shocked many people in NFL circles. The offense also added running back C.J. Spiller and used their 1st rd pick on tackle Andrus Peat from Stanford as it looks to maintain a solid running game that finished 9th in the NFL last season and help keep some of the pressure off of quarterback Drew Brees’ arm. The offense should be one of the Top 10 units in the NFL at minimum this season even if it drops off a little from last year’s top ranking. Defensively, the Saints were brutal last season but added some nice pieces in the offseason with the addition of physical cornerback Brandon Browner, inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and outside linebacker Anthony Spencer. We expect a much improved Saints defense this season and expect the Saints to get back into double figures in the win column and win the NFC South. 2015 Projected Record for New Orleans Saints: 11-5

2. Atlanta Falcons(+200 odds to win NFC South at Bovada) – The Falcons fell on hard times the past two seasons winning just 10 games total in former head coach Mike Smith’s tenure so General Manger Thomas Dimitroff canned Smith and has brought in Dan Quinn to run the show as new head coach. Quinn is the former defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks so he knows a thing or two about building a defense. The Falcons defense was absolutely horrific last season as it was dead last 32nd in the NFL and was torched for 118 points in it’s four December games alone. The Falcons should be improved this season with Quinn plus some nice free agent additions in cornerback Phillip Adams, defensive end Adrian Clayborn and linebacker Justin Durant. The Falcons also had a very good draft and used their 1st and 2nd rd picks on more defensive help in DE/LB Vic Beasley from Clemson and cornerback Jalen Collins from LSU. The defense was a problem last season but the offense was not as it finished 8th in the NFL in total offense. Quarterback Matt Ryan along with wideouts Julio Jones and Roddy White make up one of the best aerial attacks in the NFL plus 3rd rd draft pick, running back Tevin Coleman out of Indiana, looks like he can give the Falcons a solid running threat. Atlanta looks to be headed in the right direction and should have a good year. 2015 Projected Record for Atlanta Falcons: 9-7

3. Carolina Panthers(+200 odds to win NFC South at Bovada) – The Panthers have won the NFC South the past two seasons but went from 12-4 in 2013 to 7-9 last season when they made the playoffs with a sub .500 record. Quarterback Cam Newton is one of the most versatile signal callers in the game as he can beat you with his arm and legs. However, the man can only do so much and Carolina’s front office has to do better getting some deep threat weapons to help him out. Carolina had a couple nice possession receivers in tight end Greg Olsen and wideout Kelvin Benjamin last season and both guys went over 1000 yards receiving. However, neither was a deep threat and that’s why Carolina’s offense struggled at times and ended up just 16th in the NFL. The Panthers have tried to rectify that by bringing nack Ted Ginn Jr. who excelled in 2013 for Carolina as a deep threat but struggled last season for Arizona. 2nd rd draft pick Devin Funchess out of Michigan is a big 6-4, 232 pound receiver who should also help Carolina’s passing attack this season. Carolina’s defense was solid again last season ending up 10th in total defense in the NFL and should be one of the better units again this season with Luke Kuechly leading the unit and he is the best in the business at MLB as far as we are concerned. 2015 Projected Record for Carolina Panthers: 9-7

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers(+650 odds to win NFC South at Bovada) – The Buccaneers were just 2-14 in head coach Lovie Smith’s first season in Tampa but that brutal season and record came with a nice reward. The reward’s name is Jameis Winston. Yes, sir, the Bucs cashed in last season’s mess of a season for the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft and used that pick to select former Florida State Seminole and Heisman Trophy winner Winston with the top pick. Winston has all the tools necessary to become a franchise quarterback in the NFL but his first season on the job may not be a thing of beauty. The Bucs have gaping holes all over the field on offense and defense and if they can double last year’s win total we’ll call this season a success. The offense finished 30th in the NFL and the defense was 25th last season and no amount of great rookies is going to change that much. Add that to the fact the Bucs didn’t really add anyone of note in free agency and it looks like both sides of the ball will be in the bottom 10 in the league again this season. 2015 Projected Record for Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 4-12
