2014 NFL Draft Preview: Biggest Losers from the Scouting Combine

2014 NFL Draft Preview: Biggest Losers from the Scouting Combine: While the NFL Scouting Combine is full of feel-good stories about players skyrocketing up draft boards thanks to impressive workouts, there are also horror stories where players have seen their stock plummet thanks to poor showings. The 2014 combine was full of the latter, and several prominent players at a variety of positions didn’t do themselves any favors with their underwhelming workouts. On that note, here is a closer look at the players that saw their draft stock take a significant hit after struggling to perform during this year’s scouting comebine.

He is still in play for the No. 1 overall pick, but Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater did nothing but hurt his stock at the combine. Not only did he choose not to throw, but he didn’t run the 40-yard dash either. Bridgewater could make up for lost time with a strong pro day, but for now, he left teams with nothing but unanswered questions.

San Diego State running back Adam Muema certainly had a unique way of ending up a loser at this year’s combine. He left before ever taking part in any drills, claiming that God told him that he would end up a Seattle Seahawk if he skipped out on the combine. Good luck with that.

There has been an endless amount of conversation regarding Missouri pass-rusher Michael Sam, but when it comes to his performance on the field, he simply didn’t deliver at the combine. For an undersized defensive end with a game built on speed, his 4.91 40 time was beyond horrible. Throw in the fact that he had the second-fewest bench reps of any lineman, and Sam gave NFL execs plenty of reasons to be concerned. The defending SEC Defensive Player of the Year could still get drafted, but he is looking like a late-round selection at best.

Although he was part of an excellent offensive line at Alabama, tackle Cyrus Kouandjio looked very mediocre in individual drills during the combine. His surgically-repaired knee was a cause for concern for many medical teams, and his 5.59 40-yard dash time was probably worse than what I would run. For a guy that was being touted as a first-round pick, Kouandjio will be lucky to go in the third round at this point.

He was a crucial part of a rejuvenated LSU passing attack, but receiver Jarvis Landry struggled to impress at the combine. After measuring at 5’11”, he needed to show some serious burst in the other drills. Instead, he ran a 4.77 40-yard dash and recorded a 28 ½-inch vertical leap. The market for undersized, slow receivers in the NFL isn’t great.

Like many of the quarterbacks that have played at Texas Tech, tight end Jace Amaro is fighting an uphill battle to prove that his impressive numbers are more than a product of the pass-friendly system that the Red Raiders use. A disappointing 4.74 40-yard dash time won’t silence any critics, and in fact, it will likely prevent him from being the first tight end off the board.
