When the 2011-12 NFL season begins, all 32 teams believe they have a chance to reach and win the Super Bowl. While that belief ends up being false hope for a majority of the teams, there is a select group that has a legitimate shot at becoming champions. Granted, teams have come from seemingly out of nowhere to win it all in the past, particularly from the NFC, but for the most part, the teams that have enough talent to win it all know it from the time the regular season kicks off.

Favorites – 2012 Super Bowl Odds, Favorites and Vegas Futures

In the era of free agency, Super Bowl-winning teams are used to seeing roster turnover that makes winning back-to-back titles very difficult. However, the Green Bay Packers don’t have that issue as they prepare to defend their title. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is an MVP candidate, and he leads a spread, pass-heavy offense that proved too much for opponents last season. The defense can be equally impressive, especially when Clay Matthews is leveling quarterbacks. The return of tight end Jermichael Finley and running back Ryan Grant only make the Packers better, and Green Bay is going to be a tough champion to dethrone.

Heading into last year’s playoffs, the New England Patriots looked like the team to beat. Despite a surprising early exit, the Patriots still have enough pieces in place to make another run at a Super Bowl. Quarterback Tom Brady is coming off an MVP season, and the addition of Chad Johnson only makes the pass-heavy offense more dangerous. Linebacker Jerod Mayo leads a revamped defense, and if Albert Haynesworth plugs the middle as expected, New England shouldn’t suffer another postseason disaster.

Some teams have a formula for winning, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of those teams. Ben Roethlisberger makes all the big plays, and Rashard Mendenhall and the offensive line pound teams, especially in the fourth quarter. On defense, Troy Polamalu leads a downright nasty unit. The front seven and the secondary hit and tackle as good as any in the NFL. Come playoff time, running the football and playing tough defense translates into plenty of wins and makes the Steelers one of the toughest teams to knock off.

Contenders – 2012 Super Bowl XLVI Odds, Contenders and Vegas Lines

Dual-threat quarterback Michael Vick gives the Philadelphia Eagles a dynamic weapon that no other team in the NFL has. On defense, newly acquired cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will make the blitz-heavy defense even more devastating. The Eagles will have one of the most explosive, big-play offenses in the NFL. With the defense strengthened during free agency, Philadelphia could have what it takes to get over the hump and win it all.

After a strong regular season in 2010-11, the Atlanta Falcons’ inexperience showed in the postseason. Despite an early exit from the playoffs, Atlanta returns a loaded group on offense capable of making another run. Quarterback Matt Ryan continues to progress toward stardom, and running back Michael Turner and wide receiver Roddy White are as reliable as any player at their positions. Rookie speedster Julio Jones adds a new wrinkle to an already potent offense, and if the defense can hold its own in the playoffs, the Falcons could make the jump to Super Bowl contender.

When most football fans think of the New Orleans Saints, they think of the high-powered passing attack led by quarterback Drew Brees. However, the Saints actually had the best scoring defense in the NFC last season and the fourth-best in the NFL. While Brees and the offense certainly play a big role in the team’s success, the all-around talent on both sides of the ball is the real reason the Saints are capable of winning it all. The addition of running back Mark Ingram in the draft could be the X-factor. He gives New Orleans a physical back that can run out the clock late in close games and pick up the short yardage when needed.

Sleepers – 2012 Super Bowl Vegas Odds, Sleepers and Predictions

The Dallas Cowboys were a train wreck last season, but a healthy Tony Romo under center will go a long way to helping fix the team’s problems. Wide receiver Dez Bryant returns from injury as well to team with established star Miles Austin. Throw in a trio of quality running backs, the Cowboys will be putting up plenty of points this season as long as the starters stay on the field. Defensively, Dallas loves to pressure opposing quarterbacks, and the unit will have to be in attack mode this year to make up for a weak secondary. If Dallas’ young cornerbacks play better than expected, the rest of the team is talented enough to make a Super Bowl run.

If the window of opportunity isn’t already closed on the Indianapolis Colts, it is certainly getting close. That being said, quarterback Peyton Manning is one of those special players that can make everyone around him better. The Colts dealt with a ton of injuries last season and still managed to make it to the postseason. With the team back at full strength, Manning will more than likely have Indianapolis in the Super Bowl conversation by season’s end. A revamped offensive line could be the key to taking this team back to the Super Bowl.

Teams to Avoid – 2012 Super Bowl XLVI Odds, Picks and Overrated Teams

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a surprising 2010-11 season, but the team is still a little young to make a legitimate run at a title. Quarterback Josh Freeman has exceeded all expectations thus far, and he and wide receiver Mike Williams should be hooking up for touchdowns for years to come. A solid offensive line has been locked up for the foreseeable future, and LeGarrette Blunt is set to become the feature back for the ground game. In short, the Buccaneers have all the pieces in place to become a contender in the near future, but for the time being, the Falcons and the Saints rule the NFC South and will keep Tampa Bay from breaking through.

Although defending Rookie of the Year Sam Bradford appears to be a franchise quarterback, the St. Louis Rams just don’t have enough weapons on offense to make a deep playoff run yet. The good news is that Steven Jackson is one of the most reliable backs in the NFL, and the offensive line is getting better. The bad news is that Bradford still needs some more explosive receivers to throw to in order to stretch opposing defenses, while the Rams’ defense is still a work in progress. St. Louis is building a strong front seven through the draft in recent years, but the team as a whole needs a little more experience. The Rams could win the NFC West this year, but the Super Bowl is too much to ask for.
