2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Receiving Corps

2012 NFL Season Predictions – Top 5 Receiving Corps: With the NFL becoming a pass-first league, having as many strong options at wide receiver as possible is definitely a preferred. When breaking down the best receiving corps in the game today, depth, talent and potential all come into play. For the sake of the rankings, I have left out tight ends, even though there are a few tight ends playing today that basically serve solely as receivers. On that note, here is a look at the teams with the best collection of receivers in the NFL for the upcoming 2012 season.

2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Receiving Corps

1.      New York Giants

With the emergence of Victor Cruz, the Giants probably have the best receiving duo in the NFL. Cruz finished third in the NFL in receiving yards last season, and fellow receiver Hakeem Nicks had nearly 1,200 yards despite missing some time with an injury. Both players have the speed to stretch the field, and while Nicks has the size to do damage in the red zone, Cruz is a highlight reel in the open field. Rookie Rueben Randall will be the third option in the passing game, but with the dynamic duo drawing most of the attention, Randall should step in and make plays right away. It is the big ability of this group that sets them apart.

2.      Green Bay Packers

Greg Jennings has been a star for the last few years, and with Jordy Nelson bursting on to the scene with 15 touchdowns last season, the Packers have one of the deepest groups of receivers in the league. The X-factor of the bunch could be Randall Cobb. As a rookie last season, Cobb showcased his big play ability in the return game, and he took on a bigger role in the passing game as the year progressed. He should be primed for a breakout season in 2012. Veterans James Jones and Donald Driver are reliable options, as well, and with so many options, it is not hard to see why quarterback Aaron Rodgers won MVP honors and put up incredible numbers last season.

3.      Atlanta Falcons

The group is anchored by Roddy White, who has emerged as one of the best all-around receivers in the NFL. He has topped 80 catches in five straight seasons and has at least 100 catches in each of the last two years. While White provides the consistency, Julio Jones takes care of the explosiveness. He made big play after big play as a rookie, and he is just scratching the surface of his potential. Throw in an underrated slot receiver in Harry Douglas, and it is easy to understand why the Falcons have been moving more and more to being a pass-first team the last couple of seasons.

4.      Detroit Lions

Even if the Lions had just one wide receiver on the roster, they could probably still make the list as long as that receiver was Calvin Johnson. “Megatron” led all receivers in yards and touchdowns last season, and he is basically unstoppable if they ball is throw properly. Johnson is tall, fast, strong, and can leap with the best of them. He is a nightmare in the red zone and in jump-ball situations, and he stretches the field for big plays, as well. At times, he would literally go up in triple coverage and come down with the ball. Throw in Nate Burleson and Titus Young, who both topped 600 yards last year, and Detroit has assembled a nice package of targets for quarterback Matthew Stafford.

5.      New England Patriots

After having a fairly thin group at wide receiver last year, the Patriots addressed the issue by adding Brandon Lloyd in the offseason. Lloyd is the deep threat New England has been lacking, and after topping 1,400 yards to years ago, Lloyd nearly reached 1,000 yards last year despite playing in the miserable offenses of Denver and St. Louis. In New England, he will team with the best slot receiver in the game in Wes Welker and veteran Deion Branch. Quarterback Tom Brady didn’t necessarily need another weapon, but he got one.
