2012 NFL Predictions: AFC East Division Odds, Picks and Projections

2012 NFL Predictions: AFC East Division Vegas Odds, Free Picks and Projections: The AFC East has flexed some muscle in recent years. The division has sent a team to the conference title game in five out of the last six seasons, including three straight. Last year, the New England Patriots parlayed the division crown into a trip to the Super Bowl. Given the recent history, it’s tough to bet against an AFC East team making another run at a championship. New England looks like the frontrunner once again, but things get pretty interesting after that. Here is a look at how the division stacks up for the 2012 NFL season.

2012 NFL Predictions: AFC East Division Vegas Odds, Picks and Projections

1.      New England Patriots (Prediction: 12-4)

The Patriots are the defending division and conference champions, and at the very least, they should be able to defend their AFC East crown. Tom Brady gives New England a perennial MVP candidate under center, and he has all his weapons back from last year’s high-powered offense and then some. Receiver Brandon Lloyd should be a nice deep threat for an offense that already features the best slot receiver in the NFL and two unstoppable tight ends. More importantly, several early round draft picks were used to upgrade a defense that was one of the worst in the league last season.

2.      Buffalo Bills (Prediction: 9-7)

Buffalo’s front office opened up the checkbook this offseason, making major improvements to a defense that struggled to rush the passer last season. Defensive ends Mario Williams and Mark Anderson were brought in to team with tackles Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams, giving the Bills one of the top defensive fronts in the game. Buffalo also upgraded the secondary by drafting cornerback Stephon Gilmore in the first round. Offensively, the Bills have a solid core, as well. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick showed flashes of brilliance before being hampered for much of the season with injured ribs. Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller form a nice 1-2 punch in the backfield, and receiver Stevie Johnson can stretch the field. Buffalo doesn’t have enough firepower to challenge for the division crown, but the upgrades on defense will lead to a decent season.

3.      New York Jets (Prediction: 8-8)

Talk about a messy situation. While the addition of Tim Tebow is simply supposed to provide an added dimension to the offense, it is only going to create a QB controversy when Mark Sanchez inevitably hits a rough patch. Throw in the fact that the Jets averaged a meager 3.8 yards per carry last season after riding a power running game and stout defense to back-to-back AFC title games prior to last year’s struggles. New York has an identity crisis on offense in more ways than one, and although Darrelle Revis and the defense remain solid, the Jets no longer have the same defense that can carry the team. Let the Tebow chants begin.

4.      Miami Dolphins (Prediction: 5-11)

Although the Dolphins won six of their final nine games last season after Matt Moore took his turn under center, the Miami front office showed little confidence in the QB. The Dolphins drafted Ryan Tannehill in the first round with the hope that he can become the franchise QB of the future. Worse yet, Miami traded away their best offensive weapon in receiver Brandon Marshall, and the Chad Johnson experiment has already failed. With basically no weapons at receiver, running back Reggie Bush will likely be the center of a one-dimensional offense that isn’t going to overwhelm anyone. Meanwhile, linebacker Cameron Wake leads a defense that is good but not great. Add it up, and it is going to be a rebuilding year in Miami as Tannehill likely takes the reins at some point.
