2012 New York Giants Over/Under Odds, Schedule, NFC and Super Bowl Odds

2012 NFL Team Predictions: New York Giants Vegas Over/Under Odds, Schedule and Forecast: Last season, the New York Giants couldn’t run the ball at all, couldn’t defend the pass that well, and had a four-game losing streak to start the second half of the year. No big deal for this team. The Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the season finale to win the NFC East with a 9-7 record and reach the playoffs. From there, they rolled through the NFC, upsetting the defending champion Green Bay Packers along the way, and then knocked off the New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl for the second time in the last five years. It wasn’t always pretty, but the Giants are quickly becoming the most clutch team in the NFL. They save their the best for the big games, and the only question that remains is whether or not 2012 will bring more of the same.

No player has meant more to this franchise in recent years than quarterback Eli Manning. It is hard to believe that he was once considered a bust, but it is time to give credit where credit is due. While the running game sputtered and the defense dealt with injuries, Manning put the Giants on his back last year. He threw for nearly 5,000 yards, and he personified the team’s clutch mentality. Manning led the NFL in fourth quarter touchdown passes, and he made play after play on third down and in the fourth quarter. He led a game-winning driver in the final minutes at New England during the regular season, and he did the same to thing to the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Manning has shown that he can keep the Giants competitive no matter who he has around him on offense. As long as he is under center, New York has a fighting chance to repeat.

Of course, Manning doesn’t exactly have a lack of weapons in the passing game these days. Receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks are both big plays waiting to happen, and while Nicks also has the size to do damage in the red zone, Cruz is electrifying after the catch in the open field. Last year, Nicks finished just shy of 1,200 yards despite missing some time, and Cruz finished third in the NFL with more than 1,500 yards. While Mario Manningham did leave via free agency, rookie Rueben Randall and newly-acquired tight end Martellus Bennett should pick up the slack. Rookie running back David Wilson was also brought in to help Ahmad Bradshaw and the running game, but even if this offense remains one dimensional, Manning has shown he can get the job done.

While Manning has taken care of the scoring for the Giants in recent years, the defensive line has been the other constant for this franchise. Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora terrorize quarterbacks as good as any trio in the NFL, and after finishing second in sacks last year, the Giants figure to be at or near the top once again. More importantly, the defense should improve overall in 2012. Young defensive tackles Linval Joseph and Marvin Austin should bolster the run defense, and safety Kenny Phillips and corner Prince Amukamara should be better with a little more experience under their belts. With the pass rush leading the way, the Giants’ defense will show up in big games like it always does.

If there is a knock on the group, it is there tendency to get unfocused during the regular season. After all, the Giants were a loss to the Cowboys away from missing the playoffs entirely last season. Unfortunately, up-and-down regular season play just comes with the territory for New York, and it probably isn’t going to change. Manning and company know that they just have to make it into the postseason and have already proven that they can beat any team on any field. As a result, the Giants probably aren’t going to have the best record in the conference or even win their division. That being said, the defending champs will find a way to make the playoffs and make plenty of noise when they get there.
