2012 New England Patriots Over/Under Odds, Schedule, AFC and Super Bowl Odds

2012 NFL Team Predictions: New England Patriots Vegas Over/Under Odds, Schedule and Forecast: It is hard to call the Patriots’ 2011 season a failure. After all, they went 13-3 and won the AFC East during the regular season and went on to defeat Baltimore in the AFC title game to reach the Super Bowl. However, a second Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants in the last five years has to leave a sour taste in the mouth of a franchise that has won three championships since the start of the 2001 season. While last year ended with disappointment for New England, the silver lining is that an already-talented team might have gotten even better during the offseason, and the Patriots should have more than enough firepower to make another run at a title.

The strength of this team starts with the offense, and the strength of the offenses is quarterback Tom Brady. He threw for more than 5,200 yards last season and 39 touchdowns, and he remains one of the most accurate and smartest QBs in the game. Brady is the consummate pocket passer, and he can absolutely pick apart defenses. The guy is heading to the Hall of Fame when he retires, but in the meantime, he will be putting up MVP-caliber numbers for years to come. Brady is one of the few players at his position that can find a way to win games and put points on the board no matter who he has to work with.

Fortunately got Brady, he has a ton of weapons to work with this season and a strong offensive line protecting him. Wes Welker is arguably the top slot receiver in the NFL, and he can roll out of bed and catch 100 passes. Meanwhile, tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez are both matchup nightmares for defenses. Gronkowski has the size to run away from linebackers and the size to run over cornerbacks and safeties. In his first two seasons in the NFL, he has 27 touchdowns. Hernandez, on the other hand, is so fast that he lines up at running back on occasions. He can stretch the field for big plays like few players at the position. The X-factor for this year’s offense is receiver Brandon Lloyd. After putting up respectable numbers despite playing for the Rams and Broncos, he should blossom as top deep threat in the Patriot’s high-powered passing attack. Running back Stevan Ridley will provide the balance for the attack, but Brady and company will be doing most of the damage.

As incredible as the Patriots’ offense was last season and should be this year, the defense is coming off an atrocious season. New England’s secondary got absolutely shredded on multiple occasions last year, and a long pass down the sidelines to Giants’ receiver Mario Manningham ultimately cost the Patriots the Super Bowl. The Patriots addressed the issue by adding pass rushers Chandler Jones and Don’t’a Hightowter in the draft. The addition of Hightower in particular gives New England a very athletic group of linebackers. The rookie will team with Brandon Spiks and Jerod Mayo to form a trio of potential playmakers.

There really isn’t any competition within the AFC East for New England. Even if the defense doesn’t improve for some reason, the Patriots’ offense will overwhelm the rest of the division. Brady and company also drew the weak NFC West and AFC South on their schedule, meaning another big win total should be in store. Just like last season, Brady and company have a good chance to compile the conference’s best record and secure home-field advantage.

In the end, the Patriots have all the pieces in place to make a Super Bowl run. Brady is a perennial MVP candidate, and he has his best group of weapons to work with since Randy Moss was in town and actually cared about football. An improved pass rush should do wonders for the defense, and while it is by no means an elite unit, it doesn’t have to be with the offense New England brings to the table. It will be Super Bowl or bust for Bill Belichick’s bunch.
