2011 Seattle Seahawks NFL Odds and Predictions – Seahawks Super Bowl Odds and NFC Championship Futures

2011 Seattle Seahawks NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Seattle Seahawks NFL Football Season Preview: A 7-9 record usually isn’t considered a successful season by NFL standards, but for Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks, the record was good enough to win the NFC West. While the title was clearly the product of a terrible division, the Seahawks did validate themselves to a degree by knocking off the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in the opening round of the playoffs. Despite the postseason appearance last season, Seattle made a host of offseason moves. In fact, the team was more or less overhauled. Now, the new-look Seahawks will try to make it back-to-back division titles for the franchise.

The biggest change will occur under center where long-time starter Matt Hasselbeck has been replaced by former Viking Tarvaris Jackson. Jackson never really found his rhythm in Minnesota, but Pete Carroll is banking that a change in scenery will bring out the best in the young player. Jackson does possess an NFL-caliber arm, but the jury is out on whether or not he has the rest of the tools needed to play the position.

Seattle attempted to make Jackson’s transition as smooth as possible by adding receiver Sidney Rice and tight end Zach Miller in the offseason. Rice was Jackson’s favorite target in Minnesota, and he has the tall frame and speed needed to be a big play threat for the Seattle offense. The downside is that he has been dealing with injuries the last two seasons, which has severely limited his production. Miller should give Jackson a nice safety valve. He is one of the best pass-catchers at his position, although playing in Oakland has kept him out the spotlight. In Carroll’s offense with an unproven QB, Miller could enjoy a breakout season.

While the passing attack will certainly have a different look, the Seahawks did even more work rebuilding the offensive line. James Carpenter was selected in the first round and will start at right tackle. Right guard John Moffitt was selected in April’s draft as well and will be joined by the newly acquired Robert Gallery at left guard. Throw in last year’s first round pick Russell Okung at left tackle, and Seattle has a young but talented offensive line. It may take a few games for chemistry to develop, but running back Marshawn Lynch should benefit from an improved front as the season goes on. In fact, the ground game will likely become the strength of this team when all is said and done.

Defensively, established starters Lofa Tatupu, Lawyer Milloy and Kelly Jennings are all gone. Big things are expected out of David Hawthorne as he moves to middle linebacker to replace Tatupu, but in general, the secondary will have the break in several young players. The strength of the unit is the front four, particularly defensive ends Chris Clemons and Raheem Brock. The duo combined for 20 sacks last year, and that total could climb even higher with Carroll promising to bring more pressure in 2011-12. Overall, the Seahawks defensive still has more questions than answers.

Despite being the defending NFC West champs, Seattle doesn’t have the look of a playoff team after all the offseason moves. Jackson is a major question mark, and he is being asked to lead the franchise. Rice has the potential to provide plenty of offense, but he has already been slowed by injuries during the preseason. Lynch should enjoy a solid season behind the new offensive line, but if the Seahawks end up one dimensional, points will still be hard to come by. Throw in a defense that is young and inexperienced at several positions, and Seattle could go from first to worst in the division. At the very least, a return trip to the playoffs seems unlikely.
