2011 Philadelphia Eagles NFL Odds and Predictions – Eagles Super Bowl Odds and NFC Championship Futures

2011 Philadelphia Eagles NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Philadelphia Eagles NFL Football Season Preview: Defensive end Clay Matthews was an integral part of the Green Bay Packers’ Super Bowl run last season, and he may end up doing the same for Philadelphia this season. Matthews’ hit on Eagles QB Kevin Kolb last season opened the door for Mike Vick. Vick seized the opportunity, setting career highs in passing yards, passing touchdowns and rushing touchdowns despite playing in just 12 games. Throw in a slew of offseason acquisitions, and Vick and company enter the 2011-12 season as a self-proclaimed dream team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Philadelphia grabbed headlines by grabbing prized free agent Nnamdi Asomugha. The cornerback is one of the best in football at his position and was the best player available in the offseason. He will team with Asante Samuel and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who was acquired in a Kolb trade, to form one of the most potent secondaries in the NFL. The Eagles will almost inevitably rank among the top 10 against the pass this season, and they will need it with teams like Green Bay, Atlanta and New Orleans waiting in the NFC.

The blitz happy defensive unit also loaded up on additional pass rushers. Defensive end Cullen Jenkins joins the front line, along with pass-rushing specialist Jason Babin. Defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove was also brought in to bolster the rushing defense. Philadelphia ranked 22nd in the NFL last season in points allowed, and while the offense will get the headlines thanks to its explosive players, the much improved defense could be the real key to a title run for the Eagles.

That’s not to say those aforementioned explosive players won’t be vital contributors. Starting with Vick, the Eagles have a seemingly endless number of players that can take the ball to the end zone on any given play. Wide receiver DesSean Jackson could be the best deep threat in the game, and fellow receiver Jeremy Maclin isn’t far behind. Running back LeSean McCoy is a threat running and catching the ball, and he actually led all backs in receptions a year ago. Tight end Brent Celek is a nice safety valve as well.

The only thing that could hold the Eagles scoring attack back is the offensive line. After all, this group did allow Kolb get knocked out last season, and Vick has never been able to play a full season without getting banged up. With Vince Young now the backup in Philadelphia, the season could derail quickly if Vick misses any significant time. Even with inconsistent play up front, this offense is still going to put up points. The same cannot be said if Vick and others start to go down with injuries.

Make no mistake about it, Philadelphia has a chance to win now and the front office acted accordingly. On paper, the Eagles should easily be among the favorites to win the Super Bowl. However, the Miami Heat is proof that amassing tons of talent doesn’t immediately lead to championships. If Vick can play the way he did a year ago and stay on the field a full season, the Eagles are going to be tough to handle on offense. The defense should gel as the year progresses as well, and Philadelphia has to be considered the favorite to win the NFC East. Whether or not they can knock off the Packers and the other top teams in the conference come playoff time remains to be seen.
