2011 New York Jets Odds and Predictions – Jets Super Bowl Odds and AFC Championship Futures

2011 New York Jets NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – New York Jets NFL Football Season Preview: The New York Jets are a team that has been on the doorstep of greatness the last two seasons. Consecutive trips to the AFC Championship Game have ended in loses, leaving dreams of a Super Bowl victory just out of reach. As it stands, the only way the 2011-12 season will be a success for Rex Ryan and company is if the Jets can finally break through and reach the big game. The team made some changes on offense in the offseason to try and make that happen, and it could be now or never for this franchise.

A majority of the changes focused on surrounding quarterback Mark Sanchez with reliable targets at wide receiver. After all, this is an offense that ranked fourth in rushing yards per game but just 22nd in passing yards. Braylon Edwards, who never met a pass he couldn’t drop, and Jerricho Cotchery are gone, and veterans Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason are now in. Burress in particular, who has to get in game shape after spending two years in prison, could be valuable to Sanchez’s development. His height and wingspan make him an easy target, which is exactly what a QB that has barely completed more than 50 percent of his passes needs. Throw in tight end Dustin Keller and former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes, and the Jets passing attack has the potential to climb into the upper half of the NFL.

While the passing attack was given the attention this offseason, New York’s bread and butter is its power run game. Shonn Greene will get his first chance to carry the load in a feature role this season with LaDainian Tomlinson as the primary backup. Greene has shown flashes of greatness, and behind an excellent offensive line, he should emerge as one of the elite backs in the NFL. The Jets like to physically wear down opponents with the run game and put them away in the fourth quarter. Greene has the combination of power and speed to do just that.

Defense has always been a calling card of Ryan, and even with his unit taking a step back last season, the Jets still gave up the third-fewest rushing yards, the sixth-fewest passing yards, and the sixth-fewest points in the NFL. Anchored by shutdown corner Darrelle Revis and a blitz-heavy scheme, New York is all about physically punishing opponents. Losing Kris Jenkins and Shaun Ellis weren’t ideal, but New York added defensive linemen Muhammad Wilkerson and Kendrick Ellis with their first two picks in the draft to compensate. The Jets also added cornerback Donald Strickland to team with Revis and swapped one first-round bust for another by dumping Vernon Gholston and adding Aaron Maybin. Add it all up, and it is hard to imagine a scenario where this unit doesn’t rank inside the top 10 in most major categories once again.

At the end of the day, the Jets’ formula for winning is running the ball and playing defense, and that isn’t going to change this season. Rex Ryan is going to play his mental games off the field, and his team is going to play smash-mouth football on it. The physical style isn’t always pretty, but it is effective. Dethroning the New England in the AFC East is going to be tough with Sanchez breaking in some new targets and still maturing in general, but the Jets should have no trouble making the playoffs. Once there, another deep run is certainly a possibility.
