2011 New York Giants NFL Odds and Predictions – Giants Super Bowl Odds and NFC Championship Futures

2011 New York Giants NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – New York Giants NFL Football Season Preview: For many teams, a 10-6 season is considered a success and is good enough to get them in the playoffs. However, the 10-6 campaign for the New York Giants last season was only good enough to cause some serious disappointment.  Playing the Philadelphia Eagles with a lead late in the game with a chance to clinch the NFC East, the Giants called for a seemingly innocent punt. The play seemed even more harmless after DeSean Jackson fumbled around while trying to field the ball, but New York’s fortunes changed in a hurry as Jackson recovered and took the punt all the way for the game-winning touchdown. The play cost the Giants a division title and a trip to the postseason. Tom Coughlin and company will have to put the heart-breaking moment behind them in order to rebound in 2011-12.

It hasn’t been hearts breaking for the Giants this preseason, but plenty of other body parts have for a defensive unit that ranked in the top 10 against the run and the pass last season. Defensive end and pass rushing specialist Osi Umenyiora is having knee surgery, and three cornerbacks are dealing with serious injuries. Bruce Johnson ruptured an Achilles tendon, Terrell Thomas blew out his knee, and first-round pick Prince Amukamara broke his foot. That means players such as Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka and Antrel Rolle will have to stop if this unit is going to match last year’s solid numbers.

The good news is that Giants remain intact on offense for the most part. Eli Manning is back at quarterback, and although he has been incredibly inconsistent over his career, his numbers are generally solid when all is said and done. After all, Manning has led this franchise to a Super Bowl victory, and up and down play just comes with territory. Having two solid options at receiver could help end the Manning rollercoaster ride, and Hakeem Nicks and Mario Mannigham are just that. Nicks is a big-play, big-body target, especially in the red zone. Meanwhile, Manningham has the pure speed to get behind defensive backs and stretch the field.

Despite the powerful weapons at receiver, New York will likely be a run-first team this year. It’s tough to blame Coughlin for adopting the mentality considering he has a new version of thunder and lightning at his disposal with Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. Bradshaw is the home run hitter and the superior option in the receiving game, while Jacobs is a sledge hammer around the goal line and in the fourth quarter against tried defensive fronts. The two play off each other’s strengths, and they could be one of the best backfields in the NFL this season.

When it comes down to it, the strength of the Giants is their overall balance. Last year, New York ranked in the top 10 in both passing yards and rushing yards. They also ranked seventh in total scoring. Throw in a defense ranked in the top 10 in multiple categories, and it’s easy to understand why this team was just a win away from making the playoffs.

With virtually the same team back this year, the Giants should be back in the mix for the NFC East title this season. However, the Philadelphia Eagles are just as good if not better than a year ago, and Dallas welcomes back Tony Romo. Factor in all the injuries to the secondary in an already tough division, and the Giants certainly aren’t a lock to make the postseason. Unless Manning can play at his highest level for a majority of the season, New York will likely finish above .500 but come up just short of the playoffs once again.
