2013 IRWIN Tools Night Race Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs

2013-IRWIN-Tools-Night-Race-Odds-Free-Picks-and-Predictions2013 IRWIN Tools Night Race Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs : Bristol Motor Speedway has always been known to provide excitement. After all, what else would happen when 43 cars are crammed on a half-mile track at speeds that average more than 125 mph? However, Bristol has also been known to provide some excitement for bettors over the years. Originally, all the bumping and banging and wrecks made the track a frequent site of upsets and first-time winners. Even though recent changes to the track’s layout have calmed things down, the upsets haven’t exactly stopped as drivers and teams attempt to figure out the proper setup to handle the new banking. Thanks in large part to the changes to the track surface and configuration, Bristol remains one of the more wide-open tracks on the schedule. With that in mind, here is a closer look at a few underdogs that could pull off an upset in Saturday night’s race.

Bettors should be pleasantly surprised to see Brian Vickers listed as a 33/1 longshot to win this weekend at Bristol. After all, the guy has finished eighth or better in all three starts at the track since joining Michael Waltrip Racing in 2012. More importantly, he has two top-five finishes in his those three starts, including a fourth-place finish in the August race last year when he was a serious contender for the win in the final laps. Vickers is often overlooked because he has been a part-time driver for the past two seasons, but that didn’t stop him from winning at New Hampshire two starts ago. Another win this weekend isn’t out of the question, and the payoff would be sizeable.

Normally, Mark Martin really wouldn’t be worth taking a chance on at Bristol. After all, the short track has never been his favorite, and he has actually skipped the last three races at the track. However, an injury to Tony Stewart has allowed Martin to slide behind the wheel of the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 14 machine for the rest of the year, beginning this weekend. Martin may not be the driver he was in his prime, but he is still capable of contending for wins. Heck, he was leading last weekend at Bristol when he ran out of gas with only a handful of laps to go. Now, he will be driving for a championship-caliber race team at a track where he finished second as recently as 2009. At his current 33/1 odds, bettors may want to gamble that his first start with his new team turns out to be a memorable one.

He came out of nowhere to win at Indianapolis a few weeks ago, and Ryan Newman could pull off another surprise victory this weekend at Bristol. He has quietly been one of the most consistent performers at the track since layout was altered, and believe it or not, Newman’s 11.4 average finish in the last 10 races at Bristol is actually the second best in the series. During the stretch, he has finished in the top 10 on seven occasions, and he has three top-six finishes during the stretch. Newman finished seventh at Bristol earlier this year, and considering he always seems to be near the front at the track, it won’t take much to get him to victory lane. He could end up being a steal at his current 33/1 odds.

Considering he has an 18.7 average finish at Bristol, it is understandable why Paul Menard would is getting 50/1 odds to win this weekend. That being said, his recent performances at the track suggest that he has figured out the half-mile bullring and could be primed for a breakout run. After all, Menard has finished in the top five in four of his last five starts at Bristol, including three straight. He has also finished as high as fifth during the stretch. He is clearly a much better driver at the track than his overall numbers indicate, and the recent run of success is definitely encouraging. Not to mention the fact that it will only take a small wager to yield a big payout at his long odds.
