2013 GoBowling.com 400 Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs

2013-GoBowling400-Odds-Predictions-and-Free-Picks2013 GoBowling.com 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Vegas Favorites and Sleepers: The Cup Series heads back to Pocono Raceway this season, and while the 2.5-mile, triangle-shaped track will likely never escape its reputation for producing boring racing, boring can be profitable for bettors. Thanks to the track’s unique shape and flat corners, passing can be extremely difficult, and track position often trumps overall speed. As a result, drivers are often able to use pit strategy to get out front and then hold off faster cars to steal wins. Not only that, but underdogs have also been known to hit on a strong setup every now and then and simply come out of nowhere to dominate at Pocono. Either way, the potential for an upset exists this weekend, and here are a few drivers that could deliver a surprise win for bettors.

Despite being a former winner at Pocono, Joey Logano is only getting 28/1 odds to win Sunday’s GoBowling.com 400. The long odds are especially puzzling considering that his victory at the track came in dominating fashion in June of 2012. Logano sat on the pole for the race, led the most laps and ultimately went to victory lane. Perhaps more importantly, he has followed up the win with back-to-back top-15 finishes, including a top-10 run earlier this year. Pocono is one of Logano’s best tracks, and he has shown as recently as last year that he can not only beat the competition, but he can dominate it. Bettors need to take advantage of his generous odds this weekend.

Although Mark Martin is winless at Pocono in 53 starts, he is still underrated at his current 33/1 odds. After all, the veteran has finished second on seven different occasions at the track, including as recently as 2012. In fact, Martin was out front in the closing laps in the June race last season before a bump from Joey Logano literally knocked him out of the top spot. The veteran’s smooth style and attention to hitting his marks is a natural fit for a triangle-shaped track like Pocono that has three differently configured turns. For whatever reason, things just have fallen into place for Martin to win at Pocono yet, but his days as a contender clearly aren’t over. Not to mention the fact that bettors have to like the potential payoff they could get for backing a driver that has been one spot away from a win at Pocono seven times.

He is coming off another strong run at Indianapolis, and Juan Pablo Montoya has a chance to keep the momentum going this weekend at Pocono. Keep in mind that the flat, sweeping corners at both tracks are very similar, and drivers that run well at Indy also tend to run well at Pocono. Case in point, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon are the only drivers with multiple wins at Indianapolis, and all three have also win multiple races at Pocono. Granted, Montoya has never won at either track, but he has finished as high as second at both and has had pit road problems cost him likely victories at both tracks. He also has four top-10s in his last nine starts at Pocono, and he was running in the top 10 at the track earlier this year before getting involved in a wreck with Matt Kenseth. Montoya still battled back to finish in the top 15, and he should have the speed to contend for the win this weekend. At his current 33/1 odds, bettors may want to take a chance that Montoya can remain mistake free for all 400 miles and turn his speed into a win.
