2013 Auto Club 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Jimmie Johnson the Vegas Favorite

2013 Auto Club 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Auto Club 400 Favorites and Sleepers to Win on March 24, 2013 at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California: The Cup Series heads to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California this weekend for the Auto Club 400. The 2.0-mile oval has one of the wider racing grooves of any track on the schedule, and it is actually a sister track to Michigan International Speedway because of the similarities in their layouts. The two tracks are also similar in that fuel mileage often plays a role in determining the winner. The wide racing surface makes side-by-side racing somewhat comfortable and creates long green flag runs. As a result, it is often the team with the best pit strategy that ends up in Victory Lane.

Last year, it was Mother Nature that had a big role in deciding the outcome as rain ended the race after just 129 laps. Before weather intervened, Kyle Busch had the dominant car for most of the afternoon, leading a race-high 80 laps. However, he was forced to settle for second after Tony Stewart gambled on the race being called and staying out during a caution. Granted, Stewart’s car was stout in its own right as he led 42 laps, but there is no denying that his decision not to pit and the subsequent rain showers sealed the victory for him.

The Favorites

California native Jimmie Johnson has known nothing but success at his home-state track. In 18 starts at Auto Club Speedway, he has compiled a series-leading 5.4 average finish. In the last 10 races at the track, his average finish improves to an incredible 3.3. More importantly, Johnson leads all drivers with five wins at ACS, and he has finished second on five occasions, as well. It would be a major surprise if he isn’t a series contender for the win this weekend.

He already has one win under his belt with his new Joe Gibbs Racing team, and Matt Kenseth could add another victory this weekend in Fontana. After all, his 10.3 average finish at the track is the third best in the series, and he has finished seventh or better 10 times in his last 13 starts. During the stretch, Kenseth’s three wins at ACS are the second most in the series.

The Dark Horses

After just missing out on a win at Bristol last weekend, Kyle Busch could be ready to cash in at Auto Club Speedway this weekend. He is a former winner at the track, and he has come close to making a return trip lately. Busch finished third at ACS in 2011 and second last season, giving him 10 top-10 finishes in his last 13 starts in Fontana.

Is there any driver hotter right now than Kasey Kahne? After leading the most laps at finishing second at Las Vegas two weeks ago, he went to Victory Lane last weekend at Bristol for this first time in his career. Now, Kahne gets to head to Fontana where he already has a win under his belt. He is looking like an early contender for the 2013 Sprint Cup title, and he could make it back-to-back wins on the year this weekend.

Although his 15.5 average finish at Auto Club Speedway isn’t overly impressive, Kevin Harvick has made serious strides at the 2.0-mile track in recent years. He has finished in the top 10 in his last five starts at the track, winning the 2011 event. Harvick has a 3.5 average finish in four starts at ACS since 2010 so there are no signs that he is slowing down.

Sleeper Special

Rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is off to a solid start this season, finishing 18th or better in all four races thus far. Considering the past success of his Roush Fenway Racing organization at Auto Club Speedway, this weekend’s race could be his first chance to turn his solid results into something special. After all, Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards are among the drivers that have won at the 2.0-mile track while driving for Jack Roush. Stenhouse could become the next name to join the list.

Big Name to Avoid

With four top-five finishes in the first for races of the year, defending series champ Brad Keselowski looks more than ready to win another championship. However, Auto Club Speedway has been a bit of trouble spot for him in his young career. Keselowski has a 22.8 average finish at the track in four starts, and he is still searching for a top-15. Don’t get me wrong, I fully expect him to post a career-best finish at ACS Sunday. That being said, it is awful hard for a driver to go from being a non-factor at a track to Victory Lane without showing some signs of improvement in between.
