2013 Advocare 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Jimmie Johnson the +500 Favorite

2013-AdvoCare-500-Odds-Free-Picks-and-Predictions2013 Advocare 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Jimmie Johnson the +500 Favorite: The Cup Series makes its lone trip to Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend, and with Labor Day being celebrated next Monday, the race will be a rare Sunday night event. Sunday’s Advocare 500 is also the second-to-last race of the regular season so a pressure-packed atmosphere is guaranteed as drivers fight for the final spots in the upcoming Chase, and if last year’s race was any indication of what to expect this weekend, a thrilling finish could be on tap. In the 2012 event, a late caution set up a three-lap shootout. Martin Truex Jr. led at the time of the caution, but Denny Hamlin beat him off pit road. On the restart, Jeff Gordon made a three-wide pass attempt, but rather than putting a bumper to Hamlin, Gordon raced him clean. The decision allowed Hamlin to hang on for the win while Gordon settled for second.

The Favorites

While he has never won at Atlanta, Matt Kenseth has been the most consistent driver at the track lately. In the last 10 races at the track, he has compiled a series-leading 7.4 average finish, and during the stretch, he has finished fourth or better five times. Meanwhile, Kenseth has won a series-leading five races in 2013, including three at 1.5-mile tracks.

Running up front at Atlanta has become routine for Jimmie Johnson. In 21 starts at the track, he has made three trips to victory lane and has finished third or better an incredible 10 times. His 108.4 driver rating is also the best in the series, and no driver shows up with a car capable of winning at Atlanta more often than Johnson.

The veteran has slipped a bit in recent years, but Jeff Gordon has remained dominant at Atlanta. Keep in mind that in the last two starts at the track, he has a win and a second-place finish. Since the start of the 2003 season, Gordon has two wins at Atlanta and has finished second on four other occasions.

The Dark Horses

If Atlanta isn’t Kurt Busch’s best track, it is certainly on the short list of his favorites. He has finished in the top 15 in 10 of his last 11 starts at his track, and in his last seven starts, he has five finishes of seventh or better. During the stretch, Busch has two victories, and he is a three-time winner at Atlanta for his career.

Carl Edwards’ first Cup Series win came at Atlanta, and the 1.5-mile track has remained one of his best. In 15 starts at the track, he has finished in the top 10 on 10 occasions. More importantly, he is a three-time winner at Atlanta, and he has finished third or better seven times.

Sleeper Special

In the wake of the Tony Stewart injury and Mark Martin’s departure to Stewart-Haas Racing, Brian Vickers will make an unscheduled start for Michael Waltrip Racing this weekend at Atlanta, and bettors will want to take advantage. After all, Vickers has finished 11th or better in six of his last seven starts at the track, and in his last four starts at Atlanta, he has three finishes of seventh or better.

Big Name to Avoid

Although he is the defending winner of this weekend’s race, bettors may want to steer clear of Denny Hamlin. He has been mired in a horrible slump and has gone 10 straight races without a top-10 and has posted a dismal 27.3 average finish during the stretch. Don’t forget, Hamlin was the defending winner of last weekend’s race at Bristol and started on the pole, but the end result was another poor finish. Until he snaps out of his funk, there is no reason to throw away money on Hamlin.
