2012 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs

2012 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs: Martinsville Speedway hasn’t exactly been known to produce a lot of upsets. After all, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin combined to win nine straight races at the track from the fall of 2006 through the fall race of 2010. However, the trend has changed recently as three different drivers have gone to Victory Lane in the last three races at the track. Not to mention the fact that two of the three drivers were first-time winners at Martinsville, including Ryan Newman earlier this year. Granted, the track still can’t be considered a great opportunity for an underdog to break through, but at least there is some hope. With that in mind, here is a few drivers getting long odds that could deliver pull off a surprise win this weekend and deliver a sizeable payout for bettors.

If you look at his body of work, Matt Kenseth deserves to be a 33/1 longshot to win this weekend at Martinsville. After all, his 15.0 average finish is good but not great, and his Roush Fenway Racing team has never been great as a whole at the track. That being said, Kenseth has found something in recent years. He has finished sixth or better twice in his last three starts at Martinsville, including a fourth-place finish earlier this year. Not to mention the fact that he has won two of the last three Chase races, including last weekend’s race at Kansas. Kenseth is a hot driver that is coming off one of his best career finishes at Martinsville earlier this year. Bettors aren’t going to get a potential payoff this big with a driver as talented as Kenseth very often, and they should strongly consider taking advantage of it.

Although he will be making just his eighth start of the year as a part-time driver for Michael Waltrip Racing, Brian Vickers is still as dangerous as any full-time driver. He has four top-10s, including three top-five finishes, in his seven previous starts in 2012. More importantly, two of those top-five finishes came at short tracks, and in his last start at a flat track, he finished in the top 10. Considering Martinsville is a short, flat track, there is no reason Vickers can’t run at the front of the field this weekend. Throw in the fact that he qualified for second for Sunday’s race, he certainly seems capable of pulling off an upset. At his 40/1 odds, Vickers could be a steal for bettors this weekend.

It has taken a series of strange events, but A.J. Allmendinger has found a ride for Sunday’s race at Martinsville. After being suspended for a violation NASCAR’s drug policy earlier in the year and losing his job at Penske Racing, Allmendinger found himself without a ride even when he was reinstated. However, a concussion suffered by Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Talladega opened the door for Regan Smith to drive Junior’s No. 88. Allmendinger was an unexpected beneficiary as he was picked to replace Smith in the No. 51. He ran well enough in his first two starts to earn a third race in the car this weekend, and it just so happens that Allmendinger finished second at Martinsville earlier this year. He also has four straight top-15 finishes at the track overall. Martinsville is arguably his best track, and after a runner-up effort at the track a few months ago, Allmendinger is a pretty intriguing pick at his current 150/1 odds.
